Assessment of time of emergence of anthropogenic deoxygenation and warming: insights from a CESM simulation from 850 to 2100 CE
Marine deoxygenation and anthropogenic ocean warming are observed and
projected to intensify in the future. These changes potentially impact the
functions and services of marine ecosystems. A key question is whether marine
ecosystems are already or will soon be exposed to environmental conditions
not experienced during the last millennium. Using a forced simulation with
the Community Earth System Model (CESM) over the period 850 to 2100, we find
that anthropogenic deoxygenation and warming in the thermocline exceeded
natural variability in, respectively, 60 % and 90 % of total ocean
area. Control simulations are typically used to estimate the pre-industrial
variability level. However, the natural variability of oxygen (O2)
and temperature (T) inferred from the last millennium period is
systematically larger than the internal variability simulated in the
corresponding control simulation. This renders natural variability from
control simulations to be biased towards low estimates. Here, natural
variability is assessed from the last millennium period (850–1800 CE), thus
considering the response to forcing from explosive volcanic eruptions, solar
irradiance and greenhouse gases in addition to internal, chaotic
variability. Results suggest that in the tropical thermocline, where
biological and solubility-driven O2 changes counteract each other,
anthropogenic changes in apparent oxygen utilisation (AOU) and in O2
solubility (O2,sol) are detectable earlier than O2 changes.
Both natural variability and change in AOU are predominantly driven by
variations in circulation with a smaller role for productivity. By the end of
the 21st century, ventilation becomes more vigorous in the tropical
thermocline, whereas ideal age in deep waters increases by more than
200Â years relative to the pre-industrial period. Different methodological choices are
compared and the time for an anthropogenic signal to emerge (ToE) is earlier
in many thermocline regions when using variability from a shorter period,
from the control simulation or estimates from the industrial period instead
of the variability from the last millennium. Our results highlight that
published methods may lead to deviations in ToE estimates, calling for a
careful quantification of variability. They also highlight that realised
anthropogenic change exceeds natural variations in many regions.</p
Hole-LO phonon interaction in InAs/GaAs quantum dots
We investigate the valence intraband transitions in p-doped self-assembled
InAs quantum dots using far-infrared magneto-optical technique with polarized
radiation. We show that a purely electronic model is unable to account for the
experimental data. We calculate the coupling between the mixed hole LO-phonon
states using the Fr\"ohlich Hamiltonian, from which we determine the polaron
states as well as the energies and oscillator strengths of the valence
intraband transitions. The good agreement between the experiments and
calculations provides strong evidence for the existence of hole-polarons and
demonstrates that the intraband magneto-optical transitions occur between
polaron states
Syntheses, Structures, and Photophysical Properties of Mono- and Dinuclear Sulfur-Rich Gold(I) Complexes
Sulfur-rich 1,2 dithiolene and neutral thione ligands were used for the synthesis of gold complexes, some of them exhibiting aurophilic interactions. Surprisingly, the closest Au···Au contact is observed in an unsupported dinuclear complex, which makes part of a supramolecular network. Photophysical studies, combined with DFT calculations, indicate that the participations of the Au···Au interactions have some relevance to the rich luminescence properties of these compounds
Synthesis and reactivity of silylated tetrathiafulvalenes
Novel organosilylated tetrathiafulvalenes (TTFs) possessing Si–H or Si–Si bonds have been synthesised. The crystal structures of several derivatives have been determined by X-ray diffraction, including that of dimeric (Si2Me4)(TTF)2 (11) incorporating a diatomic SiMe2–SiMe2 linker. Cyclic voltammetry measurements in all cases show two oxidation waves. DFT calculations were performed to rationalize the absence of an electronic communication between the two TTF moieties of 11 through the disilanyl spacer. The reactivity of the Si–H bond has been exploited to prepare the dinuclear complex [{Ru(CO)4}2{μ-(Me2Si)4TTF}] (14), starting from Ru3(CO)12 and TTF(SiMe2H)4 (1). Treatment of 14 with 2 equiv. of PPh3 or dppm results in selective substitution of a CO ligand trans to a SiMe2 group to afford mer-[{Ru(PPh3)(CO)3}2{μ-(Me2Si)4TTF}] (13) and mer-[{Ru(CO)3}2(η1-dppm){μ-(Me2Si)4TTF}] (16). Attempts to transform the Si–H bonds of some TTF(SiMe2H)n (n = 1, 2) into Si–O functions using stoichiometric amounts of water in the presence of tris(dibenzylideneacetone)dipalladium(0) were unsuccessful. Quantitative cleavage of the CTTF–Si bond was observed instead of formation of TTF-based-siloxanes. Essays of catalytic bis-silylation of phenylacetylene with 11 and TTF(SiMe2-SiMe3) (9) in the presence of Pd(OAc)2/1,1,3,3-tetramethylbutylisocyanide failed. Again, cleavage of the CTTF–Si bond was noticed
Optical Phonon Lasing in Semiconductor Double Quantum Dots
We propose optical phonon lasing for a double quantum dot (DQD) fabricated in
a semiconductor substrate. We show that the DQD is weakly coupled to only two
LO phonon modes that act as a natural cavity. The lasing occurs for pumping the
DQD via electronic tunneling at rates much higher than the phonon decay rate,
whereas an antibunching of phonon emission is observed in the opposite regime
of slow tunneling. Both effects disappear with an effective thermalization
induced by the Franck-Condon effect in a DQD fabricated in a carbon nanotube
with a strong electron-phonon coupling.Comment: 8 pages, 4 figure
