TEXES Observations of M Supergiants: Dynamics and Thermodynamics of Wind Acceleration
We have detected [Fe II] 17.94 um and 24.52 um emission from a sample of M
supergiants using TEXES on the IRTF. These low opacity emission lines are
resolved at R = 50, 000 and provide new diagnostics of the dynamics and
thermodynamics of the stellar wind acceleration zone. The [Fe II] lines, from
the first excited term, are sensitive to the warm plasma where energy is
deposited into the extended atmosphere to form the chromosphere and wind
outflow. These diagnostics complement previous KAO and ISO observations which
were sensitive to the cooler and more extended circumstellar envelopes. The
turbulent velocities, Vturb is about 12 to 13 km/s, observed in the [Fe II]
forbidden lines are found to be a common property of our sample, and are less
than that derived from the hotter chromospheric C II] 2325 Angstrom lines
observed in alpha Ori, where Vturb is about 17 to 19 km/s. For the first time,
we have dynamically resolved the motions of the dominant cool atmospheric
component discovered in alpha Ori from multi-wavelength radio interferometry by
Lim et al. (1998). Surprisingly, the emission centroids are quite Gaussian and
at rest with respect to the M supergiants. These constraints combined with
model calculations of the infrared emission line fluxes for alpha Ori imply
that the warm material has a low outflow velocity and is located close to the
star. We have also detected narrow [Fe I] 24.04 um emission that confirms that
Fe II is the dominant ionization state in alpha Ori's extended atmosphere.Comment: 79 pages including 10 figures and 2 appendices. Accepted by Ap
Far infrared and submillimeter brightness temperatures of the giant planets
The brightness temperatures of Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune in the range 35 to 1000 micron. The effective temperatures derived from the measurements, supplemented by shorter wavelength Voyager data for Jupiter and Saturn, are 126.8 + or - 4.5 K, 93.4 + or - 3.3 K, 58.3 + or - 2.0 K, and 60.3 + or - 2.0 K, respectively. The implications of the measurements for bolometric output and for atmospheric structure and composition are discussed. The temperature spectrum of Jupiter shows a strong peak at approx. 350 microns followed by a deep valley at approx. 450 to 500 microns. Spectra derived from model atmospheres qualitatively reproduced these features but do not fit the data closely
INFERNO: a fire and emissions scheme for the UK Met Office's Unified Model
Warm and dry climatological conditions favour the occurrence of forest fires. These fires then become a significant emission source to the atmosphere. Despite this global importance, fires are a local phenomenon and are difficult to represent in a large-scale Earth System Model (ESM). To address this, the INteractive Fire and Emission algoRithm for Natural envirOnments (INFERNO) was developed. INFERNO follows a reduced complexity approach and is intended for decadal to centennial scale climate simulations and assessment models for policy making. Fuel flammability is simulated using temperature, relative humidity, fuel density as well as precipitation and soil moisture. Combining flammability with ignitions and vegetation, burnt area is diagnosed. Emissions of carbon and key species are estimated using the carbon scheme in the JULES land surface model. JULES also possesses fire index diagnostics which we document and compare with our fire scheme. Two meteorology datasets and three ignition modes are used to validate the model. INFERNO is shown to effectively diagnose global fire occurrence (R = 0.66) and emissions (R = 0.59) through an approach appropriate to the complexity of an ESM, although regional biases remain
Effects of Electron Correlations on Hofstadter Spectrum
By allowing interactions between electrons, a new Harper's equation is
derived to examine the effects of electron correlations on the Hofstadter
energy spectra. It is shown that the structure of the Hofstadter butterfly ofr
the system of correlated electrons is modified only in the band gaps and the
band widths, but not in the characteristics of self-similarity and the Cantor

Ground-simulation investigations of VTOL airworthiness criteria for terminal-area operations
Several ground-based simulation experiments undertaken to investigate concerns related to tilt-rotor aircraft airworthiness were conducted. The experiments were conducted on the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Ames Research Center's Vertical Motion Simulator, which permits simulation of a wide variety of aircraft with a high degree of fidelity of motion cueing. Variations in conversion/deceleration profile, type of augmentation or automation, level of display assistance, and meteorological conditions were considered in the course of the experiments. Certification pilots from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) participated, in addition to NASA research pilots. The carbon cycle in Mexico: past, present and future of C stocks and fluxes

at doi:10.5194/bg-13-223-2016-supplement.We modeled the carbon (C) cycle in Mexico with a process-based approach. We used different available products (satellite data, field measurements, models and flux towers) to estimate C stocks and fluxes in the country at three different time frames: present (defined as the period 2000–2005), the past century (1901–2000) and the remainder of this century (2010–2100). Our estimate of the gross primary productivity (GPP) for the country was 2137 ± 1023 TgC yr−1 and a total C stock of 34 506 ± 7483 TgC, with 20 347 ± 4622 TgC in vegetation and 14 159 ± 3861 in the soil.
Contrary to other current estimates for recent decades, our results showed that Mexico was a C sink over the period 1990–2009 (+31 TgC yr−1) and that C accumulation over the last century amounted to 1210 ± 1040 TgC. We attributed this sink to the CO2 fertilization effect on GPP, which led to an increase of 3408 ± 1060 TgC, while both climate and land use reduced the country C stocks by −458 ± 1001 and −1740 ± 878 TgC, respectively. Under different future scenarios, the C sink will likely continue over the 21st century, with decreasing C uptake as the climate forcing becomes more extreme. Our work provides valuable insights on relevant driving processes of the C cycle such as the role of drought in drylands (e.g., grasslands and shrublands) and the impact of climate change on the mean residence time of soil C in tropical ecosystems.The lead author (G. Area versus Length Distribution for Closed Random Walks
Using a connection between the -oscillator algebra and the coefficients of
the high temperature expansion of the frustrated Gaussian spin model, we derive
an exact formula for the number of closed random walks of given length and
area, on a hypercubic lattice, in the limit of infinite number of dimensions.
The formula is investigated in detail, and asymptotic behaviours are evaluated.
The area distribution in the limit of long loops is computed. As a byproduct,
we obtain also an infinite set of new, nontrivial identities.Comment: 17 page
Self-Similarity and Localization
The localized eigenstates of the Harper equation exhibit universal
self-similar fluctuations once the exponentially decaying part of a wave
function is factorized out. For a fixed quantum state, we show that the whole
localized phase is characterized by a single strong coupling fixed point of the
renormalization equations. This fixed point also describes the generalized
Harper model with next nearest neighbor interaction below a certain threshold.
Above the threshold, the fluctuations in the generalized Harper model are

Clinical safety of a minor eye conditions scheme in England delivered by community optometrists
Objective The aim of this study was to monitor the activity and evaluate the clinical safety of a minor eye conditions scheme (MECS) conducted by accredited community optometrists in Lambeth and Lewisham, London.
Methods and analysis Optometrists underwent an accredited training programme, including attendance at hospital eye services (HES) clinics. Patients who satisfied certain inclusion criteria were referred to accredited MECS optometrists by their general practitioners (GPs) or could self-refer. Data were extracted from clinical records. A sample of MECS clinical records was graded to assess the quality of the MECS optometrists’ clinical management decisions. Referrals to the HES were assessed by the collaborating ophthalmologists and feedback was provided.
Results A total of 2123 patients (mean age 47 years) were seen over 12 months. Two-thirds of the patients (67.3%) were referred by their GP. The most common reasons for patients needing a MECS assessment were ‘red eye’ (36.7% of patients), ‘painful white eye’ (11.1%), ‘flashes and floaters’ (10.2%); 8.7% of patients had a follow-up appointment. Of the patients seen, 75.1% were retained in the community, 5.7% were referred to their GP and 18.9% were referred to the HES. Of the HES referrals, 49.1% were routine, 22.6% urgent and 28.3% emergency. Of the records reviewed, 94.5% were rated as appropriately managed; 89.2% of the HES referrals were considered appropriate.
