Combined creep and plastic analysis with numerical methods
The combination of plastic and creep analysis formulation are developed in this paper. The boundary element method and the finite element method are applied in plates in order to do the numerical analysis. This new approach is developed to combine the constitutive equation for time hardening creep and the constitutive equation for plasticity, which is based on the von Mises criterion and the Prandtl-Reuss flow. The implementation of creep strain in the formulation is achieved through domain integrals. The creep phenomenon takes place in the domain which is discretized into quadratic quadrilateral continuous and discontinuous cells. The creep analysis is applied to metals with a power law creep for the secondary creep stage. Results obtained for three models studied are compared to those published in the literature. The obtained results are in good agreement and evinced that the Boundary Element Method could be a suitable tool to deal with combined nonlinear problems
The XMM spectral catalog of SDSS optically selected Seyfert 2 galaxies
We present an X-ray spectroscopic study of optically selected (SDSS) Seyfert
2 (Sy2) galaxies. The goal is to study the obscuration of Sy2 galaxies beyond
the local universe, using good quality X-ray spectra in combination with high
S/N optical spectra for their robust classification. We analyzed all available
XMM-Newton archival observations of narrow emission line galaxies that meet the
above criteria in the redshift range 0.05<z<0.35. We initially selected narrow
line AGN using the SDSS optical spectra and the BPT classification diagram. We
further modeled and removed the stellar continuum, and we analyzed the residual
emission line spectrum to exclude any possible intermediate-type Seyferts. Our
final catalog comprises 31 Sy2 galaxies with median redshift z~0.1. X-ray
spectroscopy is performed using the available X-ray spectra from the 3XMM and
the XMMFITCAT catalogs. Implementing various indicators of obscuration, we find
seven (~23%) Compton-thick AGN. The X-ray spectroscopic Compton-thick
classification agrees with other commonly used diagnostics, such as the X-ray
to mid-IR luminosity ratio and the X-ray to [OIII] luminosity ratio. Most
importantly, we find four (~13%) unobscured Sy2 galaxies, at odds with the
simplest unification model. Their accretion rates are significantly lower than
the rest of our Sy2 sample, in agreement with previous studies that predict the
absence of the broad line region below a certain Eddington ratio threshold.Comment: 12 pages, 6 figures, accepted for publication in A&
Inductive Entanglement Classification of Four Qubits under SLOCC
Using an inductive approach to classify multipartite entangled states under
stochastic local operations and classical communication introduced recently by
the authors [Phys. Rev. A 74, 052336 (2006)], we give the complete
classification of four-qubit entangled pure states. Apart from the expected
degenerate classes, we show that there exist eight inequivalent ways to
entangle four qubits. In this respect, permutation symmetry is taken into
account and states with a structure differing only by parameters inside a
continuous set are considered to belong to the same class.Comment: 11 pages and no figures. Accepted in PR
A revised distance to IRAS 162932422 from VLBA astrometry of associated water masers
IRAS 16293-2422 is a very well studied young stellar system seen in
projection towards the L1689N cloud in the Ophiuchus complex. However, its
distance is still uncertain with a range of values from 120 pc to 180 pc. Our
goal is to measure the trigonometric parallax of this young star by means of
HO maser emission. We use archival data from 15 epochs of VLBA observations
of the 22.2 GHz water maser line. By modeling the displacement on the sky of
the HO maser spots, we derived a trigonometric parallax of mas,
corresponding to a distance of pc. This new distance is in
good agreement with recent values obtained for other magnetically active young
stars in the L1689 cloud. We relate the kinematics of these masers with the
outflows and the recent ejections powered by source A in the system.Comment: 14 pages, 6 tables, 8 figures. Accepted to be published in Astronomy

Hall effect in quasi one-dimensional organic conductors
We study the Hall effect in a system of weakly coupled Luttinger Liquid
chains, using a Memory function approach to compute the Hall constant in the
presence of umklapp scattering along the chains. In this approximation, the
Hall constant decomposes into two terms: a high-frequency term and a Memory
function term. For the case of zero umklapp scattering, where the Memory
function vanishes, the Hall constant is simply the band value, in agreement
with former results in a similar model with no dissipation along the chains.
With umklapp scattering along the chains, we find a power-law temperature
dependance of the Hall constant. We discuss the applications to quasi 1D
organic conductors at high temperatures.Comment: Proceedings of the ISCOM conference "Sixth International Symposium on

Landslide Hazard in El Salvador
The destructive seismic events of January 13 (ML: 7.6) and February 13 (ML: 6.1) 2001 in El Salvador, with origin in the subduction area and the volcanic chain, respectively, provide an ideal scenario to analyse the factors that define the landslide hazard in this country. In this paper we analysed the events in terms of strong-motion and precedent climatic condition and their relation with the landslides induced; establishing a great opportunity to compare some hazard assessment methods as those proposed by Mora and Vahrson (1994) and Rodríguez (2001) which define the hazard in terms of the interaction between triggering agents and susceptibility conditions.
Historically both rainfalls and earthquakes have shown to be important triggers for landslides in El Salvador, and results show how the combination of these factors are also critical in defining trigger thresholds and in controlling failure mechanisms. It was found that the Mora and Vahrson method underestimates the landslides hazard; as was discussed by Bommer and Rodríguez (2002), this is mainly due to the rainfalls levels used by the method which were defined for the Costa Rica conditions, which are markedly different to those in El Salvador. The Rodríguez model describes in a better way the landslides hazard, however in some areas the hazard is overestimated due to the way as weighting factors for lithology shades the influence of topography, this suggests that assignment of weighting values in the model must be reviewed implementing a multivariate correspondence analysis instead of the bivariate model used so far
