Conditional variances in UK regional house prices
The returns of house price indices for the 13 UK regions are modelled using time series processes, including conditional variances. The first conclusion is that the UK follows the USA, with some regions displaying time-varying variances and others with constant variances. Secondly, there is limited evidence of an asymmetric component in six of the seven regions displaying autoregressive conditional heteroskedasticity. Thirdly, the results suggest that there are three distinct housing markets in the UK, based on common structures within their mean and variance processes, and that South West England is the region driving the other time-varying variances. La premiere conclusion est que le Royaume-Uni suit les Etats-Unis, certaines regions presentant des variances temporelles, d'autres des variances constantes. Formation of Kuiper Belt Binaries
The discovery that a substantial fraction of Kuiper Belt objects (KBOs)
exists in binaries with wide separations and roughly equal masses, has
motivated a variety of new theories explaining their formation. Goldreich et
al. (2002) proposed two formation scenarios: In the first, a transient binary
is formed, which becomes bound with the aid of dynamical friction from the sea
of small bodies (L^2s mechanism); in the second, a binary is formed by three
body gravitational deflection (L^3 mechanism). Here, we accurately calculate
the L^2s and L^3 formation rates for sub-Hill velocities. While the L^2s
formation rate is close to previous order of magnitude estimates, the L^3
formation rate is about a factor of 4 smaller. For sub-Hill KBO velocities (v
<< v_H) the ratio of the L^3 to the L^2s formation rate is 0.05 (v/v_H)
independent of the small bodies' velocity dispersion, their surface density or
their mutual collisions. For Super-Hill velocities (v >> v_H) the L^3 mechanism
dominates over the L^2s mechanism. Binary formation via the L^3 mechanism
competes with binary destruction by passing bodies. Given sufficient time, a
statistical equilibrium abundance of binaries forms. We show that the frequency
of long-lived transient binaries drops exponentially with the system's lifetime
and that such transient binaries are not important for binary formation via the
L^3 mechanism, contrary to Lee et al. (2007). For the L^2s mechanism we find
that the typical time, transient binaries must last, to form Kuiper Belt
binaries (KBBs) for a given strength of dynamical friction, D, increases only
logarithmically with D. Longevity of transient binaries only becomes important
for very weak dynamical friction (i.e. D \lesssim 0.002) and is most likely not

An analogue of Ryser's Theorem for partial Sudoku squares
In 1956 Ryser gave a necessary and sufficient condition for a partial latin
rectangle to be completable to a latin square. In 1990 Hilton and Johnson
showed that Ryser's condition could be reformulated in terms of Hall's
Condition for partial latin squares. Thus Ryser's Theorem can be interpreted as
saying that any partial latin rectangle can be completed if and only if
satisfies Hall's Condition for partial latin squares.
We define Hall's Condition for partial Sudoku squares and show that Hall's
Condition for partial Sudoku squares gives a criterion for the completion of
partial Sudoku rectangles that is both necessary and sufficient. In the
particular case where , , , the result is especially simple, as
we show that any partial -Sudoku rectangle can be completed

Full pf shell study of A = 47 and A = 49 nuclei
Complete diagonalizations in the pf major shell, lead to very good agreement
with the experimental data (level schemes, transitions rates, and static
moments) for the A=47 and A=49 isotopes of Ca, Sc, Ti, V, Cr, and Mn.
Gamow-Teller and M1 strength functions are calculated. The necessary monopole
modifications to the realistic interactions are shown to be critically tested
by the spectroscopic factors for one particle transfer from 48Ca, reproduced in
detail by the calculations. The collective behaviour of 47Ti, and of the mirror
pairs 47V-47Cr and 49Cr-49Mn is found to follow at low spins the particle plus
rotor model. It is then analysed in terms of the approximate quasi-SU(3)

Using gamma regression for photometric redshifts of survey galaxies
Machine learning techniques offer a plethora of opportunities in tackling big
data within the astronomical community. We present the set of Generalized
Linear Models as a fast alternative for determining photometric redshifts of
galaxies, a set of tools not commonly applied within astronomy, despite being
widely used in other professions. With this technique, we achieve catastrophic
outlier rates of the order of ~1%, that can be achieved in a matter of seconds
on large datasets of size ~1,000,000. To make these techniques easily
accessible to the astronomical community, we developed a set of libraries and

Doppler-beaming in the Kepler light curve of LHS 6343 A
Context. Kepler observations revealed a brown dwarf eclipsing the M-type star
LHS 6343 A with a period of 12.71 days. In addition, an out-of-eclipse light
modulation with the same period and a relative semi-amplitude of 2 x 10^-4 was
observed showing an almost constant phase lag to the eclipses produced by the
brown dwarf. In a previous work, we concluded that this was due to the light
modulation induced by photospheric active regions in LHS 6343 A. Aims. In the
present work, we prove that most of the out-of-eclipse light modulation is
caused by the Doppler-beaming induced by the orbital motion of the primary
star. Methods. We introduce a model of the Doppler-beaming for an eccentric
orbit and also considered the ellipsoidal effect. The data were fitted using a
Bayesian approach implemented through a Monte Carlo Markov chain method. Model
residuals were analysed by searching for periodicities using a Lomb-Scargle
periodogram. Results. For the first seven quarters of Kepler observations and
the orbit previously derived from the radial velocity measurements, we show
that the light modulation of the system outside eclipses is dominated by the
Doppler-beaming effect. A period search performed on the residuals shows a
significant periodicity of 42.5 +- 3.2 days with a false-alarm probability of 5
x 10^-4, probably associated with the rotational modulation of the primary
