Background thermal depolarization of electrons in storage rings
We discuss the influence of the background thermal bath on the depolarization
of electrons in high-energy storage rings, and on the photon emission
associated with the spin flip. We focus, in particular, on electrons at LEP. We
show that in a certain interval of solid angles the photon emission is enhanced
several orders of magnitude because of the presence of the thermal bath.
Notwithstanding, the overall depolarization induced by the background thermal
bath at LEP conditions is much smaller than the one induced by plain
acceleration at zero-temperature and can be neglected in practical situations.
Eventually we discuss in what conditions the background thermal bath can
enhance the overall depolarization by several orders of magnitude.Comment: 17 pages, (REVTEX 3.0), 4 figures. New version with updated

The Phenomenology of Extra Neutral Gauge Bosons
The phenomenological constraints on extra neutral gauge bosons at present and
at future colliders are reviewed. Special attention is paid to the influence of
radiative corrections, systematic errors, and kinematic cuts on the Z'
constraints. Simple estimates of the Z' constraints from different reactions
are derived. They make the physical origin of these constraints transparent.
The results existing in the literature are summarized and compared with the
estimates. The consequence of model assumptions on the Z' constraints is
discussed. The paper starts with an overview of Z' parameters and the possible
links between them by model assumptions. It continues with a discussion of Z'
limits and Z' measurements in different reactions at e+e- and mu+mu- colliders.
It follows an overview of the corresponding limits at proton colliders.
Possible Z' constraints from other reactions as ep collisions, atomic parity
violation, neutrino scattering and cosmology are briefly mentioned.Comment: 124 pages LaTeX, 24 figures included by eps
The cellular distribution of antifeedant prenylated anthranoids in the tissues of Vismia guianensis during development
Accumulation and distribution of two types of phenolic antifeedant metabolites, vismiones and ferruginins, in specialized cells were investigated in Vismia guianensis DC. Chemical, light, and electron-microscope analyses revealed that the two types of compounds were produced in different cells and organs and at different stages of plant development. Vismiones accumulated at various concentrations in the leaf, depending on its developmental stage, as well as in the stem of very young plants. Ferruginins appeared late in the plant's development and accumulated exclusively in secretory ducts in the secondary body of the stem and in secretory cavities of the fruits
Antimicrobial isoflavones from Desmodium canum
Bioassay-directed fractionation of Desmodium canum resulted in the isolation and characterization of three antimicrobial isoflavonones. These compounds, namely, desmodianones A, B and C, were assigned the structures 5,7,2'-trihydroxy-6,6"-dimethyl-6"-(4-methylpent-3- enyl)pyrano(2",3";4',5')isoflavanone, 5,2',4'-trihydroxy-7-methoxy-6-methyl-8-(3-methylbut-2-enyl)-is oflavanone, and 5,7,2',4'-tetrahydroxy-6-methyl-5'-(3,7-dimethylocta-2,6-dienyl )-isoflavanone, respectively
