    Tetragonal tungsten bronze compounds: relaxor vs mixed ferroelectric - dipole glass behavior

    We demonstrate that recent experimental data (E. Castel et al J.Phys. Cond. Mat. {\bf 21} (2009), 452201) on tungsten bronze compound (TBC) Ba2_2Prx_xNd1x_{1-x}FeNb4_4O15_{15} can be well explained in our model predicting a crossover from ferroelectric (x=0x=0) to orientational (dipole) glass (x=1x=1), rather then relaxor, behavior. We show, that since a "classical" perovskite relaxor like Pb(Mn1/3_{1/3} Nb2/3_{2/3})O3_3 is never a ferroelectric, the presence of ferroelectric hysteresis loops in TBC shows that this substance actually transits from ferroelectric to orientational glass phase with xx growth.     The Extradition of Canadian Citizens and Sections I and 6(I) of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms

    This article is devoted to the question of whether the extradition from Canada of a fugitive Canadian citizen charged with having committed an act that constitutes a criminal offence for which he or she may be prosecuted both in Canada and in the requesting state is a violation of his or her right as a citizen of Canada to remain in Canada, that is guaranteed by section 6( I ) of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms.\u27 In analysing this question we shall ( i ) give a brief history of and rationale for extradition, with emphasis on the variations in application by states of extradition of citizens; (2) assess whether section 6 ( i ) of the Charter of Rights ipso facto does in fact contain a right that extradition infringes; (3) enquire whether if indeed extradition infringes prima facie the section 6 ( i ) right to remain in Canada of a Canadian citizen, it is a reasonable limit, prescribed by law as can be demonstrably justified in a free and democratic society, even where he or she could be prosecuted in Canada on the same facts; (4) review the role of the Minister of Justice in extradition matters; (5) look at the comparative interests of states that have concurrent jurisdiction over the criminal offence and their impact on prosecutorial discretion in the requested state; and (6) discuss interpretation of extradition treaties

    Classification, characterisation and strategies for improvement of cattle and sheep pasture systems in marginal areas of Southern Chile

    Pasture-based livestock systems in farms with medium or low size are especially important in less favored areas and are valuable for society. For these systems to survive, it is necessary to obtain an acceptable level of productivity and ensure commercialization of the products. This study was carried out in the district of Rio Ibáñez, General Carrera Province, in the XI (Aysén) Region of Chile. The sample consisted of 28 small-scale livestock farmers with dual-purpose cattle production; 16 of them also produced sheep for meat. The empirical data produced 55 variables which were subjected to multivariate analysis; three main components were obtained which explain 72.1 % of the variance. By cluster analysis it was obtained four groups with characteristics which varied by farm size, age and personal situation of farmers, farm management and farm profitability. The principal problems found are low productivity in the herds and the poor marketing channels of animals produced. In two groups, due to the low size and poor management, the profitability of the farms is very low and this may compromise their future. To improve production systems, the training and advice of farmers should be strengthened, investment should be supported, especially for young people, and the farmer partnership should be promoted.     Characterization of Antennas on Dielectric and Magnetic Substrates Effective Medium Approximation

    This paper presents a study of the effective medium approximation of a monopole antenna printed on either a dielectric or a magnetic substrate. Simple analytical formulas to determine the effective permeability of such an antenna have been proposed and validated. For this type of antenna as μr increases, the effective permeability will reach the value of 2 (maximum) whereas, with the dielectric substrate, the effective permittivity continues to rise when increasing εr. This shows that, for very high permeability values, we will always have a size reduction below 30%

    TREX-DM: a low background Micromegas-based TPC for low-mass WIMP detection

    Dark Matter experiments are recently focusing their detection techniques in low-mass WIMPs, which requires the use of light elements and low energy threshold. In this context, we describe the TREX-DM experiment, a low background Micromegas-based TPC for low-mass WIMP detection. Its main goal is the operation of an active detection mass \sim0.3 kg, with an energy threshold below 0.4 keVee and fully built with previously selected radiopure materials. This work describes the commissioning of the actual setup situated in a laboratory on surface and the updates needed for a possible physics run at the Canfranc Underground Laboratory (LSC) in 2016. A preliminary background model of TREX-DM is also presented, based on a Geant4 simulation, the simulation of the detector's response and two discrimination methods: a conservative muon/electron and one based on a neutron source. Based on this background model, TREX-DM could be competitive in the search for low-mass WIMPs.     Development and Characterization of Lightweight Geopolymer Composite Reinforced with Hybrid Carbon and Steel Fibers.

    The aim of this paper is to analyze the influence of hybrid fiber reinforcement on the properties of a lightweight fly ash-based geopolymer. The matrix includes the ratio of fly ash and microspheres at 1:1. Carbon and steel fibers have been chosen due to their high mechanical properties as reinforcement. Short steel fibers (SFs) and/or carbon fibers (CFs) were used as reinforcement in the following proportions: 2.0% wt. CFs, 1.5% wt. CFs and 0.5% wt. SFs, 1.0% wt. CFs and 1.0% wt. SFs, 0.5% wt. CFs and 1.5% wt. SFs and 2.0% wt. SFs. Hybrid reinforcement of geopolymer composites was used to obtain optimal strength properties, i.e., compressive strength due to steel fiber and bending strength due to carbon fibers. Additionally, reference samples consisting of the geopolymer matrix material itself. After the production of geopolymer composites, their density was examined, and the structure (using scanning electron microscopy) and mechanical properties (i.e., bending and compressive strength) in relation to the type and amount of reinforcement. In addition, to determine the thermal insulation properties of the geopolymer matrix, its thermal conductivity coefficient was determined. The results show that the addition of fiber improved compressive and bending strength. The best compressive strength is obtained for a steel fiber-reinforced composite (2.0% wt.). The best bending strength is obtained for the hybrid reinforced composite: 1.5% wt. CFs and 0.5% wt. SFs. The geopolymer composite is characterized by low thermal conductivity (0.18-0.22 W/m ∙ K) at low density (0.89-0.93 g/cm3)
