Finite element simulation of semi-finishing turning of Electron Beam Melted Ti6Al4V under dry and cryogenic cooling

open6noIn the last few years, important step forwards have been made on Finite Element Simulation of machining operations. Wrought Ti6Al4V alloy has been deeply investigated both numerically and experimentally due to its wide application in the industry. Recently, Additive Manufacturing technologies as the Electron Beam Melting and the Direct Melting Laser Sintering are more and more employed in the production of biomedical and aeronautical components made of Ti6Al4V alloy. Fine acicular microstructures are generated by the application of additive manufacturing technologies, affecting the mechanical properties and the machinability. By the consequence, this peculiarity has to be considered in modelling the material behaviour. In this work, a numerical analysis of cylindrical external turning on Electron Beam Melted (EBM) Ti6Al4V alloy is presented. A Johnson-Cook constitutive equation was implemented as a flow stress model and adapted with respect to the wrought Ti6Al4V alloy. The model was calibrated and validated through the cutting forces and temperatures measurements acquired under dry and cryogenic lubricating conditions.openBordin, A; Imbrogno, S.; Rotella, G.; Bruschi, S.; Ghiotti, A.; Umbrello, D.Bordin, Alberto; Imbrogno, S.; Rotella, G.; Bruschi, Stefania; Ghiotti, Andrea; Umbrello, D

A discrete Schrodinger spectral problem and associated evolution equations

    Get PDF
A recently proposed discrete version of the Schrodinger spectral problem is considered. The whole hierarchy of differential-difference nonlinear evolution equations associated to this spectral problem is derived. It is shown that a discrete version of the KdV, sine-Gordon and Liouville equations are included and that the so called `inverse' class in the hierarchy is local. The whole class of related Darboux and Backlund transformations is also exhibited.Comment: 14 pages, LaTeX2

Freezing of Nonlinear Bloch Oscillations in the Generalized Discrete Nonlinear Schrodinger Equation

The dynamics in a nonlinear Schrodinger chain in an homogeneous electric field is studied. We show that discrete translational invariant integrability-breaking terms can freeze the Bloch nonlinear oscillations and introduce new faster frequencies in their dynamics. These phenomena are studied by direct numerical integration and through an adiabatic approximation. The adiabatic approximation allows a description in terms of an effective potential that greatly clarifies the phenomenon.Comment: LaTeX, 7 pages, 6 figures. Improved version to appear in Phys. Rev.

Entanglement generation in relativistic quantum fields

We present a general, analytic recipe to compute the entanglement that is generated between arbitrary, discrete modes of bosonic quantum fields by Bogoliubov transformations. Our setup allows the complete characterization of the quantum correlations in all Gaussian field states. Additionally, it holds for all Bogoliubov transformations. These are commonly applied in quantum optics for the description of squeezing operations, relate the mode decompositions of observers in different regions of curved spacetimes, and describe observers moving along non-stationary trajectories. We focus on a quantum optical example in a cavity quantum electrodynamics setting: an uncharged scalar field within a cavity provides a model for an optical resonator, in which entanglement is created by non-uniform acceleration. We show that the amount of generated entanglement can be magnified by initial single-mode squeezing, for which we provide an explicit formula. Applications to quantum fields in curved spacetimes, such as an expanding universe, are discussed.Comment: 8 pages, 2 figures, Ivette Fuentes previously published as Ivette Fuentes-Guridi and Ivette Fuentes-Schuller; v2: published version (online), to appear in the J. Static and dynamic friction in sliding colloidal monolayers

In a pioneer experiment, Bohlein et al. realized the controlled sliding of two-dimensional colloidal crystals over laser-generated periodic or quasi-periodic potentials. Here we present realistic simulations and arguments which besides reproducing the main experimentally observed features, give a first theoretical demonstration of the potential impact of colloid sliding in nanotribology. The free motion of solitons and antisolitons in the sliding of hard incommensurate crystals is contrasted with the soliton-antisoliton pair nucleation at the large static friction threshold Fs when the two lattices are commensurate and pinned. The frictional work directly extracted from particles' velocities can be analysed as a function of classic tribological parameters, including speed, spacing and amplitude of the periodic potential (representing respectively the mismatch of the sliding interface, and the corrugation, or "load"). These and other features suggestive of further experiments and insights promote colloid sliding to a novel friction study instrument.Comment: in print in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences U.S.A. This v2 is identical to v1, but includes ancillary material. A few figures were undersampled due to size limits: those in v1 are far sharpe

Use of biodiversity hotspots for conservation of Marine Molluscs: a regional approach

    Get PDF
A method to define biodiversity hot spots as regards marine molluscs is proposed. Species richness of Italian marine molluscs is analysed by means of data collected by members of the Italian Malacological Society. Data are ordered in the database 'Census of Italian Marine Molluscs' available on the Internet. The Census contains about 20.000 records concerning 901 species sampled in 663 localities around all the Italian coasts. The records are divided into 59 lots; for each lot we formulate an index of species richness not related to the sampling effort. This index shows a positive correlation with the environmental diversity and with the proportion of hard substrates on the sea bottom. In the lots we assess the distribution of species worth of protection (according to literature) and of most rare species. Combining these data with the distribution of lots with higher values of species richness index, we identify hot spots available for conservation

The “Eyeballing” technique : an emerging and alerting trend of alcohol misuse

    Get PDF
Alternative methods of alcohol consumption have recently emerged among adolescents and young adults, including the alcohol “eyeballing”, which consist in the direct pouring of alcoholic substances on the ocular surface epithelium. In a context of drug and behavioural addictions change, “eyeballing” can be seen as one of the latest and potentially highly risky new trends. We aimed to analyze the existing medical literature as well as online material on this emerging trend of alcohol misusePeer reviewedFinal Published versio

Thermal Noise-Boosting Effects in Hot-Wire-Based Micro Sensors

    Get PDF
This article proposes an original approach aimed at modelling the noise density in sensors based on a single hot wire or pairs of thermally coupled wires. The model consists in an original combination of a previous electrothermal model of the wire with well-established assumptions on the thermal noise in conductors that carry moderate current densities. A simple method for estimating the model parameters with simple impedance spectroscopy is suggested. The predicted power spectral densities of the wire thermal noise differ from the result of previously presented analytical models, stimulating further experimental studies. The effects of the electrothermal feedback of both hot wires and hot-wire pairs on flicker noise is also intrinsically covered by the proposed approach
