Radiation environment for rendezvous and docking with nuclear rockets

    Get PDF
Radiation environment data for the NERVA engine are provided which may be utilized in estimating radiation exposures associated with various space maneuvers. Spatial distributions of neutron and gamma tissue kerma rates produced during full thrust operation of the engine are presented. Final rendezvous with an orbiting space station would be achieved subsequent to full thrust operation during a period of 10 or more hours duration in which impulse is delivered by the propellant used for removal of decay heat. Consequently, post operation radiation levels are of prime importance in estimating space station exposures. Maps of gamma kerma rates around the engine are provided for decay times of 4 and 24 hours after a representative firing. Typical decay curves illustrating the dependence of post operation kerma rates on decay time and operating history are included. Examples of the kerma distributions around the engine which result from integration over specific exposure periods are shown

Recruiting and retaining children and families' social workers. The potential of work discussion groups

    Get PDF
Current difficulties with the recruitment and retention of children and families' social workers have been formally acknowledged. However, although initiatives which focus on remuneration and career progression are clearly welcome, research and evidence from practice highlights how social workers themselves place high value on the availability of good quality supervision. Yet, questions remain about whether first-line managers have the time or are even in the best position to offer this support. This article draws on the experience and evaluation of one particular model of supervision — 'work discussion groups' —and explores its impact with residential social work staff and teachers as well as the potential for further developments of this kind

On the bridge connection type found using high strength bolts with the type of slip-critical connections. In the installation of high quality bolt connection types is conducted pretension with using torque wrench or using manual tool by turn of nut. This study aims to determine tensile strength and failure behavior of the critical slip-type connection by varying the value of pretension on single bolt locking connection with different methods. Pretension variation used 90 Tb, 100 Tb and 110 Tb for torque wrench and 2/3, 3/6 and 4/6 rounds for manual tools of pretension respectively.Tensile test performed on each variation and variation locking method. The results showed the tensile strength values at the both locking methods are same and the failure behavior result are the bolt fail in shear and plate changes into an oval shape

Interoperability in the Heterogeneous Cloud Environment: A Survey of Recent User-centric Approaches

© 2016 Copyright held by the owner/author(s). Cloud computing provides users the ability to access shared, online computing resources. However, providers often offer their own proprietary applications, interfaces, APIs and infrastructures, resulting in a heterogeneous cloud environment. This heterogeneous environment makes it difficult for users to change cloud service providers; exploring capabilities to support the automated migration from one provider to another is an active, open research area. Many standards bodies (IEEE, NIST, DMTF and SNIA), industry (middleware) and academia have been pursuing approaches to reduce the impact of vendor lock-in by investigating the cloud migration problem at the level of the VM. However, the migration downtime, decoupling VM from underlying systems and security of live channels remain open issues. This paper focuses on analysing recently proposed live, cloud migration approaches for VMs at the infrastructure level in the cloud architecture. The analysis reveals issues with flexibility, performance, and security of the approaches, including additional loads to the CPU and disk I/O drivers of the physical machine where the VM initially resides. The next steps of this research are to develop and evaluate a new approach LibZam (Libya Zamzem) that will work towards addressing the identified limitations

The Perceived Image of Transjakarta Bus Rapid Transit

Public transport services provided by Bus Rapid Transit TransJakarta has been launched by the local government of DKI Jakarta as a mass and rapid transport mode that can attract the users of personal vehicle to use this mode of transport. Although the passengers are increasing, but the condition has not reached the optimum level yet. This study is done as an attempt to map the image perceived by the users, either frequent users, occasional users, or non-frequent users. The image projected by the users will depend on the experience degree and information each individual has. The method used here is descriptive analysis and reduction factor to obtain the dimensions of image in the respondents' mind toward TransJakarta bus. The result shows five dimensions that construct the image, namely affective dimension (Eigenvalue = 5,488, or 26% of all variances), dimension of vehicle aspects (Eigenvalue = 1,794, or 8.5% of all variances), dimension of service characteristic (Eigenvalue = 1,635, or 7.8% of all variances), dimension of impact on the trip (Eigenvalue = 1,348, or 6.4% of all variances), and dimension of impact on the user/other people (Eigenvalue = 1,088, or 5.1% of all variances)

A Basin Analysis of the Wabigoon Area of Lake Agassiz, a Quaternary Clay Basin in Northwerstern Ontario

Information from a wide range of sources is integrated in a basin analysis of the Wabigoon Basin, a Quaternary clay basin located on the Canadian Shield in northwestern Ontario. The basin sediments were deposited between 10.9 ka and 9.5 ka, along the margin of the Rainy Lobe of the Laurentide Ice Sheet, which formed the northern boundary of proglacial Lake Agassiz. The basin architecture is dominated by four major elements: end moraines, eskers, kames and a clay plain, all of which overlie irregular bedrock topography. End moraines, eskers and kames are composed mainly of a fining upward sequence of gravels and sands. The geometry of these sedimentary units, and their sedimentary structures indicates they were deposited mainly by high and low-density turbidity currents, on ice-marginal subaqueous outwash fans. Eskers contain a core of coarse gravel and sand deposited within subglacial meltwater conduits, overlain by subaqueous fan sediments deposited at the conduit mouth. Esker ridges were formed during conduit filling events and flanking deposits were formed when a conduit remained in use during ice-marginal retreat. Where conduits were shortlived, isolated subaqueous fans (kames) were formed. A depositional model is proposed which relates moraine formation to catastrophic releases of subglacial meltwater and sediment simultaneously along the entire margin of the Rainy Lobe. The clay plain forms a broad blanket of fine-grained, rhythmically-bedded sediment which obscures bedrock topography, and often buries esker and kame deposits. Seismic profiles and overburden drilling reveal deep (50-70 m) bedrock lows beneath the clay plain. These lows, oriented sub-parallel to the ice margin, acted as sediment traps, and were infilled by the deposits of underflows generated at the ice margin.
