    1-octadecene monolayers on Si(111) hydrogen-terminated surfaces: effects of substrate doping

    We have studied the electronic properties, in relation to their structural properties, of monolayers of 1-octadecene attached on a hydrogen-terminated (111) silicon surface. The molecules are attached using the free-radical reaction between C=C and Si-H activated by an ultraviolet illumination. We have compared the structural and electrical properties of monolayers formed on silicon substrate of different types (n-type and p-type) and different doping concentrations from low-doped (~1E14 cm-3) to highly doped (~1E19 cm-3) silicon substrates. We show that the monolayers on n-, p- and p+ silicon are densely packed and that they act as very good insulating films at a nanometer thickness with leakage currents as low as ~1E-7 A.cm-2 and high quality capacitance-voltage characteristics. The monolayers formed on n+-type silicon are more disordered and therefore exhibit larger leakage current densities (>1E-4 A.cm-2) when embedded in a silicon/monolayer/metal junction. The inferior structural and electronic properties obtained with n+-type silicon pinpoint the important role of surface potential and of the position of the surface Fermi level during the chemisorption of the organic monolayers.Comment: 33 pages, 8 figures, to be published J.     Thiol density dependent classical potential for methyl-thiol on a Au(111) surface

    A new classical potential for methyl-thiol on a Au(111) surface has been developed using density functional theory electronic structure calculations. Energy surfaces between methyl-thiol and a gold surface were investigated in terms of symmetry sites and thiol density. Geometrical optimization was employed over all the configurations while minimum energy and thiol height were determined. Finally, a new interatomic potential has been generated as a function of thiol density, and applications to coarse-grained simulations are presented

    Anchored phosphatases modulate glucose homeostasis.

    Endocrine release of insulin principally controls glucose homeostasis. Nutrient-induced exocytosis of insulin granules from pancreatic β-cells involves ion channels and mobilization of Ca(2+) and cyclic AMP (cAMP) signalling pathways. Whole-animal physiology, islet studies and live-β-cell imaging approaches reveal that ablation of the kinase/phosphatase anchoring protein AKAP150 impairs insulin secretion in mice. Loss of AKAP150 impacts L-type Ca(2+) currents, and attenuates cytoplasmic accumulation of Ca(2+) and cAMP in β-cells. Yet surprisingly AKAP150 null animals display improved glucose handling and heightened insulin sensitivity in skeletal muscle. More refined analyses of AKAP150 knock-in mice unable to anchor protein kinase A or protein phosphatase 2B uncover an unexpected observation that tethering of phosphatases to a seven-residue sequence of the anchoring protein is the predominant molecular event underlying these metabolic phenotypes. Thus anchored signalling events that facilitate insulin secretion and glucose homeostasis may be set by AKAP150 associated phosphatase activity

    Modeling transport through single-molecule junctions

    Non-equilibrium Green's functions (NEGF) formalism combined with extended Huckel (EHT) and charging model are used to study electrical conduction through single-molecule junctions. Analyzed molecular complex is composed of asymmetric 1,4-Bis((2'-para-mercaptophenyl)-ethinyl)-2-acetyl-amino-5-nitro-benzene molecule symmetrically coupled to two gold electrodes [Reichert et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. Vol.88 (2002), pp. 176804]. Owing to this model, the accurate values of the current flowing through such junction can be obtained by utilizing basic fundamentals and coherently deriving model parameters. Furthermore, the influence of the charging effect on the transport characteristics is emphasized. In particular, charging-induced reduction of conductance gap, charging-induced rectification effect and charging-generated negative value of the second derivative of the current with respect to voltage are observed and examined for molecular complex.Comment: 8 pages, 3 figure

    Methylthiolate-induced reconstruction of Ag(1 1 1): A medium energy ion scattering study

    Medium energy ion scattering (MEIS), using 100 keV H+ incident ions, has been used to investigate the structure of the Ag(1 1 1)(√7 × √7)R19° –CH3S surface phase. The results provide the first direct evidence that this structure does involve substantial reconstruction of the Ag surface layer. The measured absolute scattered ion yields and blocking curves are in generally good agreement with a specific structural model of the surface based on a reconstructed layer containing 3/7 ML Ag atoms, previously suggested on the basis of scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM) and normal incidence X-ray standing wave (NIXSW) studies. However, the MEIS data indicate that any rumpling of the thiolate layer, is small, and probably 0.2 Å. This value is smaller than the amplitude suggested in the STM and NIXSW studies, but could be entirely consistent with the earlier experimental data

    The local adsorption structure of methylthiolate and butylthiolate on Au(1 1 1): a photoemission core-level shift investigation

    Measurements of the core-level shifts in Au 4f photoemission spectra from Au(1 1 1) at different coverages of methylthiolate and butylthiolate are reported. Adsorption leads to two components in addition to that from the bulk, one at lower photoelectron binding energy attributed to surface atoms not bonded to thiolate species, while the second component has a higher binding energy and is attributed to Au atoms bonded to the surface thiolate. The relative intensities of these surface components for the saturation coverage (mainly (√3 × √3)R30°) phases are discussed in terms of different local adsorption sites in a well-ordered surface, and favour adsorption of the thiolate species atop Au adatoms. Alternative interpretations that might be consistent with an Au-adatom-dithiolate model are discussed, particularly in the context of the possible influence of reduced coverage associated with a disordered surface. Marked differences from previously-reported results for longer-chain alkylthiolate layers are highlighted

    Mutualistic Coupling Between Vocabulary and Reasoning Supports Cognitive Development During Late Adolescence and Early Adulthood.

    One of the most replicable findings in psychology is the positive manifold: the observation that individual differences in cognitive abilities are universally positively correlated. Investigating the developmental origin of the positive manifold is crucial to understanding it. In a large longitudinal cohort of adolescents and young adults ( N = 785; n = 566 across two waves, mean interval between waves = 1.48 years; age range = 14-25 years), we examined developmental changes in two core cognitive domains, fluid reasoning and vocabulary. We used bivariate latent change score models to compare three leading accounts of cognitive development: g-factor theory, investment theory, and mutualism. We showed that a mutualism model, which proposes that basic cognitive abilities directly and positively interact during development, provides the best account of developmental changes. We found that individuals with higher scores in vocabulary showed greater gains in matrix reasoning and vice versa.     Head Start Administrators’ Perspectives of Barriers and Facilitators to Implementing a Trauma-Informed Approach

    Educators are increasingly using trauma-informed approaches to lessen the harsh effects of trauma on children. Although this practice is becoming more common in U.S. kindergarten through Grade 12 schools, it has been slow to reach the early care and education setting, which includes Head Start programs. Head Starts are encouraged to use a trauma informed approach, however, there is limited availability of resources to guide them. The purpose of this basic qualitative study was to explore the perspectives of administrators from Head Start programs located in a Midwestern state who have used a trauma-informed approach to understand the barriers and facilitators to the implementation process. The consolidated framework for implementation research (CFIR) and implementation science were used to guide this study to discover factors that are barriers and facilitators. Semistructured interviews were conducted with 11 Head Start administrators who have participated in the implementation of a trauma-informed approach. Thematic analysis of the interview data was based on CFIR constructs. Findings from this study indicate that barriers to implementation include high cost for implementation, language barriers of families and teaching staff, a reluctance of staff to change, staff shortages, and the aftereffects of the Covid-19 pandemic. Facilitators include staff beliefs and buy-in, leadership support, training, a planning team, parent engagement, and a way to evaluate the effectiveness of implementation. The findings of this study may contribute to positive social change by providing information that Head Start administrators may use to develop strategies for implementing a trauma-informed approach. These findings should ultimately lead to better supports for children who have experienced trauma and the early childhood educators who care for them
