Use of hand diagrams in screening for ulnar neuropathy: Comparison with electrodiagnostic studies
Introduction: The objective of this study was to determine whether a hand diagram could be used to predict ulnar mononeuropathy. Methods: This was a prospective study of 117 consecutive patients referred for hand symptoms. Each subject filled out a hand diagram of symptoms and had median and ulnar sensory and motor nerve conduction studies, including ulnar conduction across the elbow. Results: The best model for predicting an ulnar mononeuropathy included hand diagram scores of definite or possible. The model had a sensitivity of 50% and specificity of 93% with an ROC area of 0.90. Conclusions: The ulnar hand diagram scoring system can be useful as a screening tool in the electrodiagnostic laboratory or for epidemiologic studies. 2,4-DINITROPHENYL RECEPTORS ON MOUSE THYMUS AND SPLEEN CELLS
A higher percentage of specific antigen-binding cells can be detected not only in normal CBA/J mouse spleen cell preparations (0.99%), but also in the normal thymus cell preparations (0.15%) with the use of [125I]2,4-dinitrophenyl-human IgG (DNP-HGG) as compared with most other antigens employed under similar conditions. The receptors on these cells are mainly specific for the DNP group as shown by the inhibition studies with DNP-lysine and the other DNP conjugates. In addition, it was shown by the inhibition studies with DNP-lysine that the thymus cells seem to have a lower avidity for DNP than the spleen cells. Preincubation of cell suspensions with antisera to immunoglobulins showed that the DNP-HGG antigen-binding cells in the thymus are inhibited predominantly with anti-”-chain serum and the spleen cells with both anti-”-chain and anti-Îł-chain sera; both cell populations were also significantly inhibited with the antisera to Îș-chains and Fab fragments. These data indicate that the nature of the receptor on the T cell differs from that on the majority of spleen cells
Novel wafer-scale adhesive bonding with improved alignment accuracy and bond uniformity
We report a versatile method for improving post-bonding wafer alignment accuracy and BCB thickness uniformity in stacks bonded with soft-baked BCB. It is based on novel BCB-based micro-pillars that act as anchors during bonding. The anchor structures become a natural part of the bonding interface therefore causing minimal interference to the optical, electrical and mechanical properties of the bonded stack. We studied these properties for fixed anchor density and various anchor heights with respect to the adhesive BCB thickness. We demonstrated that the alignment accuracy can be improved by approximately an order of magnitude and approach the fundamental pre-bond alignment accuracy by the tool. We also demonstrated that this technique is effective for a large range of BCB thicknesses of 2â16 ÎŒm. Furthermore we observed that the thickness non-uniformities were reduced by a factor of 2â3 Ă for BCB thicknesses in the 8â16 ÎŒm range
Schizophrenia and the progression of emotional expression in relation to others
Gaining an improved understanding of people diagnosed with schizophrenia has the potential to influence priorities for therapy. Psychosis is commonly understood through the perspective of the medical model. However, the experience of social context surrounding psychosis is not well understood. In this research project we used a phenomenological methodology with a longitudinal design to interview 7 participants across a 12-month period to understand the social experiences surrounding psychosis. Eleven themes were explicated and divided into two phases of the illness experience: (a) transition into emotional shutdown included the experiences of not being acknowledged, relational confusion, not being expressive, detachment, reliving the past, and having no sense of direction; and (b) recovery from emotional shutdown included the experiences of being acknowledged, expression, resolution, independence, and a sense of direction. The experiential themes provide clinicians with new insights to better assess vulnerability, and have the potential to inform goals for therapy

A video life-world approach to consultation practice: The relevance of a socio-phenomenological approach
This article discusses the [development and] use of a video life-world schema to explore alternative orientations to the shared health consultation. It is anticipated that this schema can be used by practitioners and consumers alike to understand the dynamics of videoed health consultations, the role of the participants within it and the potential to consciously alter the outcome by altering behaviour during the process of interaction. The study examines health consultation participation and develops an interpretative method of analysis that includes image elicitation (via videos), phenomenology (to identify the components of the analytic framework), narrative (to depict the stories of interactions) and a reflexive mode (to develop shared meaning through a conceptual framework for analysis). The analytic framework is derived from a life-world conception of human mutual shared interaction which is presented here as a novel approach to understanding patient-centred care. The video materials used in this study were derived from consultations in a Walk-in Centre (WiC) in East London. The conceptual framework produced through the process of video analysis is comprised of different combinations of movement, knowledge and emotional conversations that are used to classify objective or engaged WiC health care interactions. The videoed interactions organise along an active or passive, facilitative or directive typical situation continuum illustrating different kinds of textual approaches to practice that are in tension or harmony. The schema demonstrates how practitioners and consumers interact to produce these outcomes and indicates the potential for both consumers and practitioners to be educated to develop practice dynamics that support patient-centred care and impact on health outcomes
Single-longitudinal mode laser structure based on a very narrow filtering technique
A narrow filtering technique based on the spectral overlapping of two uniform FBGs and applied to obtain a Single Longitudinal Mode (SLM) laser is proposed and demonstrated in this work. The two FBGs are spectrally detuned to reduce their coincident reflection response narrowing the equivalent filter bandwidth.
