Experimental realization of a relativistic fluxon ratchet
We report the observation of the ratchet effect for a relativistic flux
quantum trapped in an annular Josephson junction embedded in an inhomogeneous
magnetic field. In such a solid state system mechanical quantities are
proportional to electrical quantities, so that the ratchet effect represents
the realization of a relativistic-flux-quantum-based diode. Mean static voltage
response, equivalent to directed fluxon motion, is experimentally demonstrated
in such a diode for deterministic current forcing both in the overdamped and in
the underdamped dynamical regime. In the underdamped regime, the recently
predicted phenomenon of current reversal is also recovered in our fluxon

Childhood Maltreatment, Depression, and Suicidal Ideation: Critical Importance of Parental and Peer Emotional Abuse during Developmental Sensitive Periods in Males and Females
Background: The adverse childhood experience (ACE) study found that risk for depression increased as a function of number of types of childhood maltreatment, and interpret this as a result of cumulative stress. An alternative hypothesis is that risk depends on type and timing of maltreatment. This will also present as a linear increase, since exposure to more types of abuse increases likelihood of experiencing a critical type of abuse at a critical age. Methods: 560 (223M/337F) young adults (18–25 years) were recruited from the community without regard to diagnosis and balanced to have equal exposure to 0–4 plus types of maltreatment. The Maltreatment and Abuse Chronology of Exposure Scale assessed severity of exposure to 10 types of maltreatment across each year of childhood. Major depressive disorder (MDD) and current symptoms were evaluated by SCID, interview, and self-report. Predictive analytics assessed importance of exposure at each age and evaluated whether exposure at one or two ages was a more important predictor than number, severity, or duration of maltreatment across childhood. Results: The most important predictors of lifetime history of MDD were non-verbal emotional abuse in males and peer emotional abuse (EA) in females at 14 years of age, and these were more important predictors across models than number of types of maltreatment (males: t9 = 16.39, p < 10-7; females t9 = 5.78, p < 10-4). Suicidal ideation was predicted, in part, by NVEA and peer EA at age 14, but most importantly by parental verbal abuse at age 5 in males and sexual abuse at age 18 in females. Conclusion: This study provides evidence for sensitive exposure periods when maltreatment maximally impacts risk for depression, and provides an alternative interpretation of the ACE study results. These findings fit with emerging neuroimaging evidence for regional sensitivity periods. The presence of sensitive exposure periods has important implications for prevention, preemption, and treatment of MDD
Geodetic model of the 2016 Central Italy earthquake sequence inferred from InSAR and GPS data
We investigate a large geodetic data set of interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR)and GPS measurements to determine the source parameters for the three main shocks of the 2016Central Italy earthquake sequence on 24 August and 26 and 30 October (Mw6.1, 5.9, and 6.5,respectively). Our preferred model is consistent with the activation of four main coseismic asperitiesbelonging to the SW dipping normal fault system associated with the Mount Gorzano-Mount Vettore-Mount Bove alignment. Additional slip, equivalent to aMw~ 6.1–6.2 earthquake, on a secondary (1) NEdipping antithetic fault and/or (2) on a WNW dipping low-angle fault in the hanging wall of the mainsystem is required to better reproduce the complex deformation pattern associated with the greatestseismic event (theMw6.5 earthquake). The recognition of ancillary faults involved in the sequencesuggests a complex interaction in the activated crustal volume between the main normal faults and thesecondary structures and a partitioning of strain releas

Non-monotonic behaviour of the superconducting order parameter in Nb/PdNi bilayers observed through point contact spectroscopy
Point contact spectroscopy measurements have been performed on Nb/PdNi bilayers in which
the thickness of the Nb layer, dNb, was kept constant at 40 nm while the thickness of PdNi,
dPdNi, was changed from 2 to 9 nm. Features related to the superconducting gap induced in the
ferromagnet have been observed in the dV=dI versus V curves. These structures show a
non-monotonic behaviour as a function of dPdNi as a consequence of the damped oscillatory
behaviour of the superconducting order parameter in the ferromagnetic layer
