Observational constraints on the types of cosmic strings
This paper is aimed at setting observational limits to the number of cosmic
strings (Nambu-Goto, Abelian-Higgs, semilocal) and other topological defects
(textures). Radio maps of CMB anisotropy, provided by the space mission Planck
for various frequencies, were filtered and then processed by the method of
convolution with modified Haar functions (MHF) to search for cosmic string
candidates. This method was designed to search for solitary strings, without
additional assumptions about the presence of networks of such objects. The
sensitivity of the MHF method is in a background of
. The comparison of these with previously known
results on search string network shows that strings can only be semilocal in an
amount of , with the upper restriction on individual strings tension
(linear density) of . The texture model is
also legal. There are no strings with . However,
comparison with the data for the search of non-Gaussian signals shows that the
presence of several (up to 3) of Nambu-Goto strings is also possible. For
the MHF method is ineffective because of
unverifiable spurious string candidates. Thus the existence of strings with
tensions is not prohibited but it is beyond
the Planck data possibilities.Comment: 15 pages, 10 figures; accepted by the European Physical Journal
A set of key questions to assess the stress among bank employees and its reliability: Bank Employee Stress Test (BEST8)
The aims of the present study are: to realize a tool, clear and helpful, to assess the occupational distress level in bank employees in Italy; secondly to assess the reliability of the tool. Eight sentences were considered after a consensus meeting that involved different professional figures. 70 questionnaires were collected. The overall Cronbach’s alpha was 0.596, a sufficient reliability was found. The elimination of one sentences (“I haven’t time to dedicate myself to my hobbies/activities/stuff”) increases alpha’s value from 0.596 to 0.620, and thus reach fully sufficient score. The claim “The pace of change on work place exceeds my capacity for adaptation” maximises the change of the level of reliability (Inter item Correlation = 0.528)
e tecnologici, continuamente soggetti a modifiche
On the cohomology of character stacks for non-orientable surfaces
We give a counterexample to a formula suggested by the work of Letellier and
Rodriguez-Villegas (arXiv:2008.13435) for the mixed Poincar\'e series of
character stacks for non-orientable surfaces. The counterexample is obtained by
an explicit description of these character stacks for (real) elliptic curves.Comment: 15 pages. All comments are welcome! V2: Minor changes in the

Calibrating the Lee-Carter and the Poisson Lee-Carter models via Neural Networks
This paper introduces a neural network approach for fitting the Lee-Carter
and the Poisson Lee-Carter model on multiple populations. We develop some
neural networks that replicate the structure of the individual LC models and
allow their joint fitting by analysing the mortality data of all the considered
populations simultaneously. The neural network architecture is specifically
designed to calibrate each individual model using all available information
instead of using a population-specific subset of data as in the traditional
estimation schemes. A large set of numerical experiments performed on all the
countries of the Human Mortality Database (HMD) shows the effectiveness of our
approach. In particular, the resulting parameter estimates appear smooth and
less sensitive to the random fluctuations often present in the mortality rates'
data, especially for low-population countries. In addition, the forecasting
performance results significantly improved as well
A generalization of Kac polynomials and tensor product of representations of
We study the multiplicities of semisimple split characters in tensor product
of semisimple split characters of . We prove that these
multiplicities are polynomial in q with non-negative integer coefficients and
we obtain a criterion for their non-vanishing. We give moreover an
interpretation of these polynomials in terms of the counting of the
representations of star-shaped quivers, generalizing a previous result of
Hausel, Letellier and Rodriguez-Villegas, who linked multiplicities for generic
-tuples of semisimple split characters and Kac polynomials.Comment: Corrected minor typos in the exposition. All comments are welcome
Cellulose Nanocrystals (NCC) from Cotton Waste & Mucilage and Fibers from Opuntia Ficus Indica (OFI). Extraction and Application in Paper and Thermoplastic Starch Films
In recent decades, the global economic and financial crisis, and its effects in the social and environmental sectors, have dramatically highlighted the urgent need for a transition to a “green economy”, environmentally responsible as well as more equitable and supportive of everyone (i.e. that neither damages future generations nor creates dangerous imbalances within current ones). Over time, this has been accompanied by a growing awareness that the eco-compatibility of a new
economic paradigm does not inhibit wealth creation or depress employment opportunities. On the
contrary, the large-scale deployment of 'green' sectors offers significant investment, growth and
employment opportunities for the entire production system.
The environmental sustainability, the need to minimise human and industrial impact, and to optimize
the use of available resources, have led all countries in the world, especially the industrialized ones,
to take a number of decisions: the implementation of reforms and incentives for the protection of
natural resources, the enhancement of environmentally-friendly infrastructures, the introduction of
new market-based mechanisms for the diffusion of eco-technologies, the creation of investements for
innovation and the elimination of environmentally harmful sibsidies.
All these choices are of enormous value especially if you think, for example, about the problem of
the global use of synthetic plastics: of the total production, about 40% is used for packaging, a sector
in which plastic products are used for short periods of time; the fact that they are usually not
compostable and difficult to recycle determines the worsening of environmental problems, such as
the increasing volume of waste and its disposal; in terms of pollution, therefore, plastics represent an
inextinguishable waste.
With this mind, the utilization of renewable sources and the reuse of waste biomasses represent
environmental imperatives, the foundations of new economic models recycling the by-products of
various industries and protecting the environment from the long-term effects of pollution.
This PhD project, taking all these considerations into account, regarded the reuse of cellulose waste
(Cellulosic Solid Residue – CSR) obtained from different sources, which guarantee a large and
reasonably constant availability, namely cotton waste from worn out textiles and cladodes of Opuntia
ficus indica (OFI, also referred to as Nopal) plants. The experimental procedures carried out aimed
to recycle the CSR (zero waste strategy), whit the idea of operating as much as possible in conditions
of circular economy, optimizing the low-cost production of valuable substances [Cellulose
Nanocrystals (NCC) in the first case, Nopal (mucilage and fibers) in the second one] to be introduced into different modern materials [Paper and Thermoplastic Starch (TPS) Films] in order to obtain their
performance improvement (micro-morphological, mechanical and thermal properties were analyzed).
The general objective of the entire work was to identify suitable applications for the specific waste
materials mentioned above, of scarce or null economical value, suggesting the optimal processes for
their treatment and final reuse, the whole in collaboration with important economic and cultural actors
of Marche and Lazio regions (Italy)
