    Enterprise agility: A Balancing Act - a local government case study

    Austerity and financial constraints have been threatening the public sector in the UK for a number of years. Foreseeing the threat of continued budget cuts, and addressing the situation many local councils face, requires internal transformations for financial stability without losing the key focus on public service. Agile transformations have been undertaken by organisations wanting to learn from the software development community and bringing agile principles into the wider organisation. This paper describes and analyses an ongoing behaviour-led transformation in a district council in the UK. It presents the results of the analysis of 19 interviews with internal stakeholders at the council, of observations of meetings among senior and middle management in a five-month period. The paper explores the successes and the challenges encountered towards the end of the transformation process and reflects on balancing acts to address the challenges, be-tween: disruption and business as usual, empowerment and goal setting, autonomy and processes and procedures, and behaviours and skills. Based on our findings, we suggest that behaviours on their own cannot guarantee a sustained agile culture, and that this is equally important for enterprise agility and for large-scale agile software development transformations

    A Canvas for Establishing Global Software Development Collaborations

    Jufo-id:80620There is an increasing need and interest for organizations to collaborate with internal and external partners on a global scale for creating software-based products and services. Potential risks and different strategies need to be addressed when setting up such collaborations. Aspects such as cultural and social features, coordination, infrastructure, organizational change processes, or communication issues need to be con- sidered. Although there are already experiences available with respect to setting up global collaborations, they mainly focus on specific areas. It is dicult for companies to quickly assess if they have considered all rele- vant aspects. An overall aid that guides companies in systematically setting up global collaborations is widely missing. In this paper we present a study based on the snowballing method as a systematic approach to literature review. Based on this literature review and inputs from indus- try we investigated what aspects and practices need to be considered when establishing global software development collaborations and how to prioritize them. Based on that we created activity roadmaps that aggregate existing experiences. Reported experiences were structured into nine main aspects each containing extracted successful practices for set- ting up global software development collaborations. As a result we came up with an initial version of a canvas that is proposed as guidance for companies for setting up global collaborations in the software development domain.Peer reviewe

    Space use, habitat selection and reproductive output of breeding common goldeneye (<em>Bucephala clangula</em>)

    Abstract Habitat selection is a crucial process affecting space use and reproductive success of birds. In this thesis, I investigated spatial and behavioural aspects of nest spacing, brood stage space use, habitat selection and factors affecting reproductive success of breeding common goldeneye (Bucephala clangula) using two large and long-term observational data sets from individually marked females. In the nesting stage, I found that spatial nesting pattern of goldeneye females changed from one year to the next and also between spatial scales. However, increasing aggregation of nesting females decreased nesting success due to increasing rate of nest desertion and nest predation especially at small spatial scale. These results provide evidence of a density-dependent population process in the common goldeneye in terms of association between annual spatial dispersion of nesting females and annual nesting success. In the brood stage, the most important factor affecting habitat selection was the amount of food. However, safe nest sites and food requirements of ducklings were not usually met in the same patch and females with broods adjusted their space-use tactics according to these critical breeding resources. Spatial divergence of these two obligatory resources induced brood movements at various distances shortly after hatching. During movements, broods used different landscape elements such as patches, corridors and matrix in a flexible way without clear fitness consequences in terms of duckling survival. Goldeneye broods suffered heavy losses especially during the early brood stage. Increasing predation risk by northern pike (Esox lucius) decreased survival of young ducklings, but frequent total brood losses suggest that also other factors affected duckling survival. Environmental factors such as temperature or rain were not related to the survival of ducklings

    Survival and cause‑specific mortality in adult females of a northern migratory ungulate

    Abstract Survival of ungulates can vary seasonally due to changing environmental conditions, e.g. weather or predation pressure. The wild forest reindeer (Rangifer tarandus fennicus, “WFR”) migrate between calving and wintering grounds. The annual cycle of female WFR includes four main seasons (wintering, calving, rutting and autumn migration) during which they are subject to different conditions, but almost nothing is known about their survival or mortality patterns. We measured survival in 305 GPS-tagged female WFR in two subpopulations in Finland (2010–2022). Data were analysed for inter-annual and seasonal patterns in survival and cause-specific mortality (predation, traffic, accidents and unknown causes) with known-fate models. Inter-annual survival in Suomenselkä (mean 0.90) showed an increasing trend during the study and was higher than in Kainuu (mean 0.84) which showed a declining trend. Seasonal variation in survival was population dependent. Survival was lowest in Kainuu during the winter while in Suomenselkä, it was lowest during autumn migration. Concerning cause-specific mortality, seasonal variation mirrored variation in predation that was the primary cause of mortality (55% of cases). Wolves (Canis lupus) killed the majority of predated individuals (58%). Predation rates were two times higher in Kainuu where the wolf density was higher. We provide the first adult survival estimates for WFR and show that the seasonal variation in survival is clearly different between these two northern ungulate populations. This indicates that seasonal variation in survival is determined by site-dependent factors and cannot be generalised across populations
