An X-ray study of the SNR G344.7-0.1 and the central object CXOU J170357.8-414302
Aims. We report results of an X-ray study of the supernova remnant (SNR)
G344.7-0.1 and the point-like X-ray source located at the geometrical center of
the SNR radio structure. Methods. The morphology and spectral properties of the
remnant and the central X-ray point-like source were studied using data from
the XMM-Newton and Chandra satellites. Archival radio data and infrared Spitzer
observations at 8 and 24 m were used to compare and study its multi-band
properties at different wavelengths. Results. The XMM-Newton and Chandra
observations reveal that the overall X-ray emission of G344.7-0.1 is extended
and correlates very well with regions of bright radio and infrared emission.
The X-ray spectrum is dominated by prominent atomic emission lines. These
characteristics suggest that the X-ray emission originated in a thin thermal
plasma, whose radiation is represented well by a plane-parallel shock plasma
model (PSHOCK). Our study favors the scenario in which G344.7-0.1 is a 6 x 10^3
year old SNR expanding in a medium with a high density gradient and is most
likely encountering a molecular cloud on the western side. In addition, we
report the discovery of a soft point-like X-ray source located at the
geometrical center of the radio SNR structure. The object presents some
characteristics of the so-called compact central objects (CCO). However, its
neutral hydrogen absorption column (N_{H}) is inconsistent with that of the
SNR. Coincident with the position of the source, we found infrared and optical
objects with typical early-K star characteristics. The X-ray source may be a
foreground star or the CCO associated with the SNR. If this latter possibility
were confirmed, the point-like source would be the farthest CCO detected so far
and the eighth member of the new population of isolated and weakly magnetized

Multi-Wavelength Observations of the Blazar 1ES 1011+496 in Spring 2008
The BL Lac object 1ES 1011+496 was discovered at Very High Energy gamma-rays
by MAGIC in spring 2007. Before that the source was little studied in different
wavelengths. Therefore a multi-wavelength (MWL) campaign was organized in
spring 2008. Along MAGIC, the MWL campaign included the Metsahovi radio
observatory, Bell and KVA optical telescopes and the Swift and AGILE
satellites. MAGIC observations span from March to May, 2008 for a total of 27.9
hours, of which 19.4 hours remained after quality cuts. The light curve showed
no significant variability. The differential VHE spectrum could be described
with a power-law function. Both results were similar to those obtained during
the discovery. Swift XRT observations revealed an X-ray flare, characterized by
a harder when brighter trend, as is typical for high synchrotron peak BL Lac
objects (HBL). Strong optical variability was found during the campaign, but no
conclusion on the connection between the optical and VHE gamma-ray bands could
be drawn. The contemporaneous SED shows a synchrotron dominated source, unlike
concluded in previous work based on nonsimultaneous data, and is well described
by a standard one zone synchrotron self Compton model. We also performed a
study on the source classification. While the optical and X-ray data taken
during our campaign show typical characteristics of an HBL, we suggest, based
on archival data, that 1ES 1011+496 is actually a borderline case between
intermediate and high synchrotron peak frequency BL Lac objects.Comment: 13 pages, accepted for publication in MNRA
A multiwavelength study of the supernova remnant G296.8-0.3
We report XMM-Newton observations of the Galactic supernova remnant G296.8-0.3, together with complementary radio and infrared data. The spatial and spectral properties of the X-ray emission, detected towards G296.8-0.3, was investigated in order to explore the possible evolutionary scenarios and the physical connexion with its unusual morphology detected at radio frequencies. G296.8-0.3 displays diffuse X-ray emission correlated with the peculiar radio morphology detected in the interior of the remnant and with the shell-like radio structure observed to the northwest side of the object. The X-ray emission peaks in the soft/medium energy range (0.5â3.0 keV). The X-ray spectral analysis confirms that the column density is high (N; HâŒ0.64Ă1022 cmâ2) which supports a distant location (d>9 kpc) for the SNR. Its X-ray spectrum can be well represented by a thermal (PSHOCK) model, with kTâŒ0.86 keV, an ionization timescale of 6.1Ă1010 cmâ3âs, and low abundance (âŒ0.12 Z; â). The 24 Όm observations show shell-like emission correlated with part of the northwest and southeast boundaries of the SNR. In addition a point-like X-ray source is also detected close to the geometrical center of the radio SNR. The object presents some characteristics of the so-called compact central objects (CCO). Its X-ray spectrum is consistent with those found at other CCOs and the value of N; H is consistent with that of G296.8-0.3, which suggests a physical connexion with the SNR.Instituto Argentino de RadioastronomĂ
The major upgrade of the MAGIC telescopes, Part II: A performance study using observations of the Crab Nebula
MAGIC is a system of two Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescopes located in
the Canary island of La Palma, Spain. During summer 2011 and 2012 it underwent
a series of upgrades, involving the exchange of the MAGIC-I camera and its
trigger system, as well as the upgrade of the readout system of both
telescopes. We use observations of the Crab Nebula taken at low and medium
zenith angles to assess the key performance parameters of the MAGIC stereo
system. For low zenith angle observations, the standard trigger threshold of
the MAGIC telescopes is ~50GeV. The integral sensitivity for point-like sources
with Crab Nebula-like spectrum above 220GeV is (0.66+/-0.03)% of Crab Nebula
flux in 50 h of observations. The angular resolution, defined as the sigma of a
2-dimensional Gaussian distribution, at those energies is < 0.07 degree, while
the energy resolution is 16%. We also re-evaluate the effect of the systematic
uncertainty on the data taken with the MAGIC telescopes after the upgrade. We
estimate that the systematic uncertainties can be divided in the following
components: < 15% in energy scale, 11-18% in flux normalization and +/-0.15 for

Oral ulcer as an exclusive sign of gastric cancer: report of a rare case
BACKGROUND: The oral cavity is a rare but occasional target for metastases, which may masquerade as various benign and inflammatory lesions, and sometimes also be asymptomatic. Oral metastatic lesions have been described in various cancers, particularly lung, breast and kidney carcinoma. CASE PRESENTATION: We here describe an uncommon case of a hard palate mucosa and gingival metastasis from gastric carcinoma that was originally diagnosed as a periodontal disease. Histopathological examination of a biopsy of the lesion revealed a signet-ring cell carcinoma, and a subsequent biopsy of an ulcerated stomach lesion showed a poorly differentiated gastric carcinoma. The patient underwent gastric resection but died of heart failure on the tenth postoperative day; a post-mortem examination revealed a residual bilateral ovarian infiltration by gastric carcinoma (Krukenberg's tumor). CONCLUSION: An occult carcinoma of the stomach may rarely metastasise to the oral cavity even as a first and exclusive manifestation; it is important to bear this possibility in mind because such conditions may mimic a benign disease
Probing the very-high-energy gamma-ray spectral curvature in the blazar PG 1553+113 with the MAGIC telescopes
PG 1553+113 is a very-high-energy (VHE, ) -ray
emitter classified as a BL Lac object. Its redshift is constrained by
intergalactic absorption lines in the range . The MAGIC telescopes
have monitored the source's activity since 2005. In early 2012, PG 1553+113 was
found in a high-state, and later, in April of the same year, the source reached
its highest VHE flux state detected so far. Simultaneous observations carried
out in X-rays during 2012 April show similar flaring behaviour. In contrast,
the -ray flux at observed by Fermi-LAT is
compatible with steady emission. In this paper, a detailed study of the flaring
state is presented. The VHE spectrum shows clear curvature, being well fitted
either by a power law with an exponential cut-off or by a log-parabola. A
simple power-law fit hypothesis for the observed shape of the PG 1553+113 VHE
-ray spectrum is rejected with a high significance (fit probability
P=2.6 ). The observed curvature is compatible with the
extragalactic background light (EBL) imprint predicted by current generation
EBL models assuming a redshift . New constraints on the redshift are
derived from the VHE spectrum. These constraints are compatible with previous
limits and suggest that the source is most likely located around the optical
lower limit, , based on the detection of Ly absorption. Finally,
we find that the synchrotron self-Compton (SSC) model gives a satisfactory
description of the observed multi-wavelength spectral energy distribution

Informing women about hormone replacement therapy: the consensus conference statement
Background: The risks/benefits balance of hormone replacement therapy is controversial. Information can influence consumers' knowledge and behavior; research findings about hormone replacement therapy are uncertain and the messages provided by the media are of poor quality and incomplete, preventing a fully informed decision making process. We therefore felt that an explicit, rigorous and structured assessment of the information needs on this issue was urgent and we opted for the organisation of a national consensus conference (CC) to assess the current status of the quality of information on hormone replacement therapy (HRT) and re-visit recent research findings on its risks/ benefits. Methods: We chose a structured approach based on the traditional CC method combined with a structured preparatory work supervised by an organising committee (OC) and a scientific board (SB). The OC and SB chose the members of the CC's jury and appointed three multidisciplinary working groups (MWG) which were asked to review clinical issues and different aspects of the quality of information. Before the CC, the three MWGs carried out: A literature review on the risk/benefit profile of HRT and two surveys on the quality of information on lay press and booklets targeted to women. A population survey on women's knowledge, attitude and practice was also carried out. The jury received the documents in advance, listened the presentations during the two-day meeting of the CCs, met immediately after in a closed-door meeting and prepared the final document. Participants were researchers, clinicians, journalists as well as consumers' representatives. Results: Key messages in the CC's deliberation were: a) women need to be fully informed about the transient nature of menopausal symptoms, about HRT risks and benefits and about the availability of non-pharmacological interventions; b) HRT is not recommended to prevent menopausal symptoms; c) the term "HRT" is misleading and "post menopausal hormone therapy" should be the preferred definition. Conclusion: This CC led to the identification of specific information drawbacks. Women are exposed to messages that are often partial, non evidence-based nor transparently developed. The structured and participative methodology of this CC allowed a multidisciplinary perspective and a substantial lay people input
