Stereovideo channel https://www.youtube.com/user/geostereovideo) is a YouTube channel of short educational videos (<5 min) focused on learning the handling of the stereographic projection technique applied to Structural Geology (also to Engineering Geology). This type of videos aims to reinforce the traditional classroom lessons with the use of communication technologies resources. Such a einforcing facilitates the possibility to deepen more on conceptual aspects once the students dominate the representation tool helping them to develop their own critical thinking skills. After three years of being launched on-line (on 2014), we analyze the broadcast and acceptance of the channel by the academic community. For this purpose we have taken into account two different sources: (1) the analytics tool from YouTube (subscriptions, views, countries, comments from the users, type of device for viewing), and (2) our own survey among users (students and teachers) to get their opinion about the videos. By January, 2017 (date of sending of this abstract), the channel has a total of 650 subscriptions, with more than 85,000 views all around the world, mainly in Spanish speaking countries (as the videos are in Spanish). The main devices for viewing the videos are PCs, but is noteworthy the use of smart phones and tablets. The video users, both students and teachers, value this type of content positively

New deformational events recorded in the SW Segment of the Carrascoy Fault (Murcia, Spain): Implications in the growth model

    Get PDF
The Carrascoy Fault is a left-lateral strike-slip fault belonging to the Eastern Betic Shear Zone. With two overlapping segments (SW and NE), this fault controls the northern edge of the Carrascoy Range and its linkage with of the Guadalentín Depression. The SW segment is formed by the Algezares – Casas Nuevas Fault zone, a fold-and-thrust system constituting foreberg-type, en-echelon-arranged reliefs that show the progressive northwestward migration of deformation from the front controlled by the left-lateral strike-slip (s.s. Carrascoy Fault). Prior studies locate the onset of the Algezares – Casas Nuevas Fault in the middle Pleistocene. In this paper we have identified new tectonic events at the NE fault tip, which fold and thrust the sediments of late Pleistocene alluvial fans. These events are younger than those recorded westernmost in previous studies, and they support a growth model in which the length fault gradually increases with each earthquake.Depto. de Geodinámica, Estratigrafía y PaleontologíaFac. de Ciencias GeológicasTRUEpu

Bacterial and fungal infections remain a major clinical challenge. Implant infections very often require complicated revision procedures that are troublesome to patients and costly to the healthcare system. Innovative approaches to tackle infections are urgently needed. We investigated the histological response of novel free P2O5 glass-ceramic rods implanted in the jaws of beagle dogs. Due to the particular percolated morphology of this glass-ceramic, the dissolution of the rods in the animal body environment and the immature bone formation during the fourth months of implantation maintained the integrity of the glass-ceramic rod. No clinical signs of inflammation took place in any of the beagle dogs during the four months of implantation. This new glass-ceramic biomaterial with inherent bactericidal and fungicidal properties can be considered as an appealing candidate for bone tissue engineeringThis work was supported by the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation (MICINN) under the projects MAT2012-38645. Immunomodulatory oligonucleotide IMT504: effects on mesenchymal stem cells as a first-in-class immunoprotective/immunoregenerative therapy

The immune responses of humans and animals to insults (i.e., infections, traumas, tumoral transformation and radiation) are based on an intricate network of cells and chemical messengers. Abnormally high inflammation immediately after insult or abnormally prolonged pro-inflammatory stimuli bringing about chronic inflammation can lead to life-threatening or severely debilitating diseases. Mesenchymal stem cell (MSC) transplant has proved to be an effective therapy in preclinical studies which evaluated a vast diversity of inflammatory conditions. MSCs lead to resolution of inflammation, preparation for regeneration and actual regeneration, and then ultimate return to normal baseline or homeostasis. However, in clinical trials of transplanted MSCs, the expectations of great medical benefit have not yet been fulfilled. As a practical alternative to MSC transplant, a synthetic drug with the capacity to boost endogenous MSC expansion and/or activation may also be effective. Regarding this, IMT504, the prototype of a major class of immunomodulatory oligonucleotides, induces in vivo expansion of MSCs, resulting in a marked improvement in preclinical models of neuropathic pain, osteoporosis, diabetes and sepsis. IMT504 is easily manufactured and has an excellent preclinical safety record. In the small number of patients studied thus far, IMT504 has been well-tolerated, even at very high dosage. Further clinical investigation is necessary to demonstrate the utility of IMT504 for resolution of inflammation and regeneration in a broad array of human diseases that would likely benefit from an immunoprotective/immunoregenerative therapy.Fil: Zorzopulos, Jorge. Geochemical and metallogenetical study of the pegmatites and associated granites from southern Comechingones pegmatitic field, Córdoba

The Comechingones pegmatitic field (CPF) is located in the eastern flank of the Sierra de Comechingones, Córdoba province. It is composed of granite pegmatites belonging to the Rare-Element class, beryl type, beryl-columbite-phosphate subtype; some of them are transitional into the Muscovite class. Beryllium, Nb, Ta and U deposits, as well as high-quality industrial mineral deposits, are frequently associated with these pegmatites. In the southern part of the CPF two different pegmatite types have been described. Type I pegmatites constitute large zoned bodies with up to 1000 m long and 50 m thick, and may constitute rare element deposits, whereas type II pegmatites occur as small, unzoned quartz-rich dykes, without metalliferous mineralizations, spatial and genetically associated with aplitic leucogranites. Preliminary geochemical data from both pegmatites types and granites are presented and discussed in this contribution. Geochemical evidences, supported by field and petrographic observations, suggest that the two types of pegmatites identified in the study area represent two different, probably diachronic, magmatic stages. Type I pegmatites display a geochemical gradation in a S-N direction, from barren pegmatites in the south to fractionated pegmatites in the northern part of the study area, and are the lithological product of the first magmatic stage. The second stage lead to the crystallization of aplitic granites and barren type II pegmatites, geochemically less fractionated than type II pegmatites.Centro de Investigaciones Geológica

Reunión Ibérica sobre Fallas Activas y Paleosismología (3ª. 2018. Alicante). = The objective of this work is to carry out geodetic studies in the Eastern Betics Shear Zone, which complements the paleoseismic and seismological studies that are being developed in the area. The main objective is to determine the current deformation that is taking place in the area, which will allow to know the kinematic behaviour of the main faults and its constituent segment, and their consequent incorporation into the seismic hazard assessment. For this, at the end of 2015 a GPS network was established, with 9 campaign stations and 1 continuous GPS station, which complements the existing networks, covering the fault zones of Alhama de Murcia, Palomares and Carrascoy and in which two observation campaigns have been carried out. In this paper we present the current state of geodetic monitoring, as well as some preliminary results.Departamento de Ingeniería Topográfica y Cartografía, Universidad Politécnica de Madrid, EspañaDepartamento de Geodinámica, Universidad Complutense de Madrid, EspañaInstituto Geológico y Minero de España, EspañaGrupo RISKNAT, Departament de Dinàmica de la Terra i de l’Oceà, Universitat de Barcelona, EspañaÁrea de Geodesia, Área de Geodesia.
