    Learning differential diagnosis of erythemato-squamous diseases using voting feature intervals

    Cataloged from PDF version of article.A new classification algorithm, called VFI5 (for Voting Feature Intervals), is developed and applied to problem of differential diagnosis of erythemato-squamous diseases. The domain contains records of patients with known diagnosis. Given a training set of such records, the VFI5 classifier learns how to differentiate a new case in the domain. VFI5 represents a concept in the form of feature intervals on each feature dimension separately. classification in the VFI5 algorithm is based on a real-valued voting. Each feature equally participates in the voting process and the class that receives the maximum amount of votes is declared to be the predicted class. The performance of the VFI5 classifier is evaluated empirically in terms of classification accuracy and running time. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved

    Full-scale performance testing and evaluation of unitized curtain walls

    Unitized curtain wall systems have been widely seen on high-rise buildings’ facades by bringing benefits with regard to ease of construction, lightness, etc. However, some design and application problems related to structural and infiltration performance of a facade system might arise during its life cycle, which is difficult for the building to compensate. This paper presents a comparative analysis of the structural and infiltration performance of the two identically detailed and produced unitized curtain wall system mock-ups. In order to understand long-term environmental effects on the curtain wall system, a fatigue process was applied on one system in addition to the standard test procedures, while the standard test procedure was applied on the other reference specimen. The tests on the two identical specimens were conducted in accordance with TS EN 13830 and AAMA 501.4 Standards. As a result of air infiltration and wind load resistance tests, air infiltration and frontal deflection values on the facade surface were obtained. Hence, experimental performance of the systems was compared and the effect of the fatigue procedure on the facade performance was evaluated

    Innovation enablers: A review of Turkish contractors’ collaborative activities and sources of information

    This study attempts to examine the differences in the collaborative activities between the Turkish contracting firms that are listed as the “Top 225 International Contractors” by Engineering News Record (ENR), according to their international revenues, and other large contracting firms that are not on this list. For this purpose, 30 large-scale Turkish general contracting firms, including 15 listed by the ENR, have been examined in terms of their collaborations during the innovation process as well as the levels of significance for the sources of information that serve as the means of “sources of innovation”. Results show some remarkable differences between the top-listed firms and other largescale contracting companies. The levels of importance indicated for the collaborations made with “universities and research institutions” and the sources of information “conferences, fairs and exhibitions” and “scientific/technical publications” show remarkable differences between the two groups of companies. Contractors who are not ENR listed are more active in making collaborations. While the number of collaborations is increasing in the timeline, both groups of contractors indicate the most important collaborations as “consultants, private R&D institutions” and “suppliers”. Findings also show a decreasing interest against collaborations with universities. Finally, findings of the research are discussed in the context of innovation, expecting to contribute to international contracting firms in evaluating their innovation approaches to their competitive advantage

    Copolymers of 7-Methoxy-2-Acetyl Benzofuryl Methylmethacrylate with Styrene: Synthesis, Characterization, Reactivity Ratios and Determination of Kinetic Parameters with Thermogravimetric Analysis

    The 7-methoxy-2-acetyl benzofuryl methylmethacrylate (MABMM) monomer was synthesized by reacting 7-methoxy-2-bromo acetyl benzofurane with sodium methacrylate in acetonitrile solvent at 70°C in the presence of triethylbenzylammoniumchloride (TEBAC). The monomer was characterized by FTIR, 1H-and 13C-NMR spectral studies. Reactivity ratios for the copolymers 7-methoxy-2-acetyl benzofuryl methylmethacrylate (MABMM)-co- styrene (ST) are reported. Copolymers were prepared by free radical polymerization using 2,2?-azobisisobutyronitrile (AIBN) as an initiator at 70°C in 1,4-dioxane solution. FTIR, 1H-and 13C-NMR spectral studies and gel permeation chromatography (GPC) were used the copolymer characterization. The monomer compositions in the copolymer were determined by elementel analyses and the reactivity ratios (ri) were calculated applying diverse linear methods, namely Finemann-Ross (FR) and Kelen-Tüdös (KT) and the nonlinear error invariable model method of a computer program RREVM. By using the latter pr°Cedure, the values of the reactivity ratios were estimated as 2.74 and 0.69 for the system MABMM (1) and ST (2), respectively. These values suggest the formation of nearly-alternating copolymers in the systems. Molecular weights were determined by gel permeation chromatography (GPC). The polydispersity indices of the polymers determined using suggest a strong tendency for chain termination by disproportionation. The glass transition temperature of the polymers were investigated by Shimadzu DSC-60 and the apparent thermal decomposition activation energies (Ed) were calculated by the Ozawa method using the Perkin-Elmer TGA thermobalance, respectively. Tg increases when the concentration of polar monomer (MABMM) in the copolymer increases.     NUMERICAL SIMULATION OF ASTROPHYSICAL JETS: INTERACTION WITH SURROUNDING MEDIUM

    WOS: 000412307300014Propagation of astrophysical jets inside an ambient medium transports a large amount of energy to surrounding materials as a consequence of interactions. These interactions have a crucial effect on the evolution and dynamics of the jets. They can cause the formation of the jet's head, which dissipates its energy. In this paper, we have numerically modeled the evolution of jet's dynamics to understand the effects of the critical parameters (Mach numbers, jet velocity, densities, pressures of the accelerated the jet and medium, sound speeds, and Lorentz factor) on the head of the jet, jet-cocoon, vortexes and shocks. When the jet propagates inside the overdense region, we observe clear evidence for deceleration of the jet and find a more complex structure. In the underdense cases, almost no back-flows and cocoons are developed. We have also modeled the pulsed type jets propagating into the overdense region and found a very rich internal structure of the jet, such as cocoon, knots, vortexes, etc. They could explain the structure of jets seen in Herbig-Haro bows and XZ Tauri proto-jet
