    Characterization of fine particulate sources at Ashaiman in Greater Accra, Ghana

    AbstractThe sources of airborne fine particles in PM2.5 range influencing air quality at Ashaiman, a semi–urban town north of Tema in Ghana had been investigated. Nuclepore and quartz fiber filters were used for the air particulate loadings and analyzed for elemental and carbonaceous compound (EC and OC) concentrations in the 8 carbon fractions using X–Ray spectrometry system and IMPROVE/Thermal Optical Reflectance method respectively. Positive matrix factorization (PMF) was utilized to identify the following eight sources; industrial emissions (11.4%), fresh sea salt (15.5%), diesel emissions (18.4%), biomass burning (9.5%), two stroke engines (5.1%), gasoline emissions (15.8%), aged sea salt (6.2%), and soil dust (17.7%). Source locations were verified by means of Conditional Probability Function (CPF) plots that utilize wind directions. The source contributions revealed the high influence of fossil fuel and biomass combustion on the air quality in Ashaiman. The presence of the harbor and the industries located at Tema were seen to have substantial impacts on respirable air particulate matter (APM) concentrations in Ashaiman

    A letter about the airborne transmission of sars-cov-2 based on the current evidence

    World Health Organization has suggested that severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is transmitted through person-to-person transmission and contact with contaminated surfaces. However, rapid spread of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) suggests other routes such as airborne transmission may be involved. A few research studies have been conducted to evaluate the potential transmission of this virus through air. Although some studies have found no evidence of airborne transmission, other more recent work is proving the presence of SARS-CoV-2 even in public places. Also, the past experiences and knowledge about the mechanisms of similar viruses such as SARS-CoV support this hypothesis. It seems that the best decision at the moment is to follow a conservative approach, and accept the hypothesis that SARS-CoV-2 is able to be transmitted through air. By this, control measures could be employed to prevent further COVID-19 infection. © Taiwan Association for Aerosol Research

    ABHD5 frameshift deletion in Golden Retrievers with ichthyosis.

    Ichthyoses are hereditary skin disorders characterized by the formation of scales and defects in the outermost layer of the epidermis. In dogs, at least six different breed-specific ichthyoses including a relatively common PNPLA1-related autosomal recessive ichthyosis in Golden Retrievers are known. In this study, we investigated 14 Golden Retrievers with scales that were not homozygous for the mutant PNPLA1 allele suggesting a genetically distinct new form of ichthyosis. Histopathological examinations showed lamellar, orthokeratotic hyperkeratosis, and mildly hyperplastic epidermis that led to the diagnosis of a nonepidermolytic ichthyosis. Combined linkage and homozygosity mapping in 14 cases and 30 nonaffected family members delimited a critical interval of ∼12.7 Mb on chromosome 23. Whole-genome sequencing of an affected dog revealed a single protein-changing variant within this region that was not present in 795 control genomes. The identified variant is a 14 bp deletion in the ABHD5 gene (c.1006_1019del), leading to a frameshift and altering the last 14 codons p.(Asp336Serfs*6). The genotypes at this variant showed perfect cosegregation with the ichthyosis phenotype in a large family comprising 14 cases and 72 controls. ABHD5 encodes an acyltransferase required for lipid metabolism. In humans, variants in ABHD5 cause Chanarin-Dorfman syndrome, a neutral lipid storage disease with ichthyosis. Our data in dogs together with the knowledge on the effects of ABHD5 variants in humans strongly suggest ABHD5:c.1006_1019del as candidate causative genetic variant for a new canine form of ichthyosis, which we propose to designate as Golden Retriever ichthyosis type 2 (ICH2)

    Independent components in spectroscopic analysis of complex mixtures

    We applied two methods of "blind" spectral decomposition (MILCA and SNICA) to quantitative and qualitative analysis of UV absorption spectra of several non-trivial mixture types. Both methods use the concept of statistical independence and aim at the reconstruction of minimally dependent components from a linear mixture. We examined mixtures of major ecotoxicants (aromatic and polyaromatic hydrocarbons), amino acids and complex mixtures of vitamins in a veterinary drug. Both MICLA and SNICA were able to recover concentrations and individual spectra with minimal errors comparable with instrumental noise. In most cases their performance was similar to or better than that of other chemometric methods such as MCR-ALS, SIMPLISMA, RADICAL, JADE and FastICA. These results suggest that the ICA methods used in this study are suitable for real life applications.     Residential Indoor and Outdoor PM Measured Using Low-cost Monitors during the Heating Season in Monroe County, NY

    Continuous 1-minute indoor and outdoor PM concentrations (~PM2.5) were measured from November through April of 2015/16 and 2016/17 at 50 single family residences in Monroe County, NY (25 per season) using Speck (Airviz Inc., Pittsburgh, PA) low-cost monitors (LCMs). While the accuracy of LCMs is inconsistent and source dependent, the LCMs provided reasonable precision for estimating indoor/outdoor (I/O) ratios based on laboratory and field testing, understanding the relationship between indoor sources and concentration, and comparing PM concentrations across residences for the detected size range (0.5-3 mm). The indoor PM2.5 concentration pattern showed clear morning and evening peaks as well as higher indoor concentrations during the weekends when people are typically at home. The mean I/O PM2.5 ratio was 1.1 for all homes and increased to 1.7 when a combustion source was in use as indicated by an elevated CO concentration whereas most prior studies have found this ratio to be < 1. Increases in wood-burning appliance temperature and indoor CO concentrations were found to be associated with an overall moderate (mean value of 2.1 µg/m3) increase in indoor PM concentration averaged over the heating season. Short-term PM increases greater than 100 µg/m3 were periodically observed in homes with and without wood-burning appliances operating. This study provides an approach for exposure assessment in homes that can be utilized by employing appropriate calibration and quality assurance procedures for the LCMs

    Dynamic Fungal Cell Wall Architecture in Stress Adaptation and Immune Evasion

    Deadly infections from opportunistic fungi have risen in frequency, largely because of the at-risk immunocompromised population created by advances in modern medicine and the HIV/AIDS pandemic. This review focuses on dynamics of the fungal polysaccharide cell wall, which plays an outsized role in fungal pathogenesis and therapy because it acts as both an environmental barrier and as the major interface with the host immune system. Human fungal pathogens use architectural strategies to mask epitopes from the host and prevent immune surveillance, and recent work elucidates how biotic and abiotic stresses present during infection can either block or enhance masking. The signaling components implicated in regulating fungal immune recognition can teach us how cell wall dynamics are controlled, and represent potential targets for interventions designed to boost or dampen immunity

    Airborne particulate matter in Tehran�s ambient air

    In recent decades, particulate matter (PM) concentrations in Tehran have exceeded the World Health Organization�s (WHO) guideline on most days. In this study, a search protocol was defined by identifying the keywords, to carry out a systematic review of the concentrations and composition of PM in Tehran�s ambient air. For this purpose, searches were done in Scopus, PubMed, and Web of Science in 2019. Among the founded articles (197 in Scopus, 61 in PubMed, and 153 in Web of Science). The results show that in Tehran, the annual average PM10 exceeded the WHO guidelines and for more than 50.0 of the days, the PM2.5 concentration was more than WHO 24-h guidance value. The PM concentration in Tehran has two seasonal peaks due to poorer dispersion and suspension from dry land, respectively. Tehran has two daily PM peaks due to traffic and changes in boundary-layer heights; one just after midnight and the other during morning rush hour. Indoor concentrations of PM10 and PM2.5 in Tehran were 10.6 and 21.8 times higher than the corresponding values in ambient air. Tehran represents a unique case of problems of controlling PM because of its geographical setting, emission sources, and land use. This review provided a comprehensive assessment for decision makers to assist them in making appropriate policy decisions to improve the air quality. Considering factors such as diversity of resources, temporal and spatial variations, and urban location is essential in developing control plans.     Differential adaptation of Candida albicans in vivo modulates immune recognition by dectin-1

    Author Summary Dectin-1 is a pattern recognition receptor recognising the fungal cell-wall component, β-glucan, and plays an essential role in controlling C. albicans infections in both mouse and man. Candida albicans is part of the normal human microflora, yet is capable of causing superficial mucosal infections as well as life-threatening invasive diseases, particularly in patients whose immune function is compromised. Here we found that the contribution of Dectin-1 is limited to specific strains of C. albicans ; effects which are due to the differential adaptation of these pathogens during infection. Importantly, C. albicans strains showed variations in both the composition and nature of their cell walls, and it was these differences which influenced the role of Dectin-1. Crucially, we found that we could alter the fungal cell wall, and subsequent interactions with the host, using antifungal drugs. These findings have substantial implications for our understanding of the factors contributing to human susceptibility to infections with C. albicans , but also treatment strategies
