Avalanche analysis from multi-electrode ensemble recordings in cat, monkey and human cerebral cortex during wakefulness and sleep
Self-organized critical states are found in many natural systems, from
earthquakes to forest fires, they have also been observed in neural systems,
particularly, in neuronal cultures. However, the presence of critical states in
the awake brain remains controversial. Here, we compared avalanche analyses
performed on different in vivo preparations during wakefulness, slow-wave sleep
and REM sleep, using high-density electrode arrays in cat motor cortex (96
electrodes), monkey motor cortex and premotor cortex and human temporal cortex
(96 electrodes) in epileptic patients. In neuronal avalanches defined from
units (up to 160 single units), the size of avalanches never clearly scaled as
power-law, but rather scaled exponentially or displayed intermediate scaling.
We also analyzed the dynamics of local field potentials (LFPs) and in
particular LFP negative peaks (nLFPs) among the different electrodes (up to 96
sites in temporal cortex or up to 128 sites in adjacent motor and pre-motor
cortices). In this case, the avalanches defined from nLFPs displayed power-law
scaling in double log representations, as reported previously in monkey.
However, avalanche defined as positive LFP (pLFP) peaks, which are less
directly related to neuronal firing, also displayed apparent power-law scaling.
Closer examination of this scaling using more reliable cumulative distribution
functions (CDF) and other rigorous statistical measures, did not confirm
power-law scaling. The same pattern was seen for cats, monkey and human, as
well as for different brain states of wakefulness and sleep. We also tested
other alternative distributions. Multiple exponential fitting yielded optimal
fits of the avalanche dynamics with bi-exponential distributions. Collectively,
these results show no clear evidence for power-law scaling or self-organized

Histone H2AX Is Phosphorylated at Sites of Retroviral DNA Integration but Is Dispensable for Postintegration Repair
The histone variant H2AX is rapidly phosphorylated (denoted {gamma}H2AX) in large chromatin domains (foci) flanking double strand DNA (dsDNA) breaks that are produced by ionizing radiation or genotoxic agents and during V(D)J recombination. H2AX-deficient cells and mice demonstrate increased sensitivity to dsDNA break damage, indicating an active role for {gamma}H2AX in DNA repair; however, {gamma}H2AX formation is not required for V(D)J recombination. The latter finding has suggested a greater dependence on {gamma}H2AX for anchoring free broken ends versus ends that are held together during programmed breakage-joining reactions. Retroviral DNA integration produces a unique intermediate in which a dsDNA break in host DNA is held together by the intervening viral DNA, and such a reaction provides a useful model to distinguish {gamma}H2AX functions. We found that integration promotes transient formation of {gamma}H2AX at retroviral integration sites as detected by both immunocytological and chromatin immunoprecipitation methods. These results provide the first direct evidence for the association of newly integrated viral DNA with a protein species that is an established marker for the onset of a DNA damage response. We also show that H2AX is not required for repair of the retroviral integration intermediate as determined by stable transduction. These observations provide independent support for an anchoring model for the function of {gamma}H2AX in chromatin repair
The History of Farm Foxes Undermines the Animal Domestication Syndrome
The Russian Farm-Fox Experiment is the best known experimental study in animal domestication. By subjecting a population of foxes to selection for tameness alone, Dimitry Belyaev generated foxes that possessed a suite of characteristics that mimicked those found across domesticated species. This \u27domestication syndrome\u27 has been a central focus of research into the biological pathways modified during domestication. Here, we chart the origins of Belyaev\u27s foxes in eastern Canada and critically assess the appearance of domestication syndrome traits across animal domesticates. Our results suggest that both the conclusions of the Farm-Fox Experiment and the ubiquity of domestication syndrome have been overstated. The role of family functioning and self-esteem in the quality of life of adolescents referred for psychiatric services: a 3-year follow-up.
PurposeTo investigate, in adolescents referred for psychiatric services, the associations of initial self-esteem and family functioning with level and change of quality of life (QoL) over a 3-year period, over and above the effect of their emotional problems.MethodsOf 1648 eligible 13-18 years old patients attending the child and adolescent psychiatric clinic (CAP) at least once, 717 (54.8% females) were enrolled at baseline (a response rate of 43.5%). Self- and parent reports on the McMaster Family Assessment Device were obtained. Adolescents reported self-esteem on the Rosenberg Scale, and emotional problems on the Symptom Check List-5. Adolescents completed the Inventory of Life Quality in Children and Adolescents (ILC). After 3 years, 570 adolescents again completed the ILC, and for 418 adolescents parent information was available. The longitudinal analysis sample of 418 adolescents was representative of the baseline sample for age, gender, emotional problems, and QoL. We used modified growth-model analysis, adjusted for SES, age, gender and time of contact with CAP, where residual variances for ILC at baseline and follow-up were fixed to 0.ResultsA poorer family functioning at baseline, reported by parents, was significantly associated with worsening QoL during the 3 years follow-up period (p = 0.001).ConclusionsParents have important knowledge about their families that may reflect long-term influences on QoL development in adolescent psychiatric patients. Health care providers and policy makers should optimize treatment outcomes by addressing family functioning in adolescents with emotional problems
Recording advances for neural prosthetics
An important challenge for neural prosthetics research is to record from populations of neurons over long periods of time, ideally for the lifetime of the patient. Two new advances toward this goal are described, the use of local field potentials (LFPs) and autonomously positioned recording electrodes. LFPs are the composite extracellular potential field from several hundreds of neurons around the electrode tip. LFP recordings can be maintained for longer periods of time than single cell recordings. We find that similar information can be decoded from LFP and spike recordings, with better performance for state decodes with LFPs and, depending on the area, equivalent or slightly less than equivalent performance for signaling the direction of planned movements. Movable electrodes in microdrives can be adjusted in the tissue to optimize recordings, but their movements must be automated to be a practical benefit to patients. We have developed automation algorithms and a meso-scale autonomous electrode testbed, and demonstrated that this system can autonomously isolate and maintain the recorded signal quality of single cells in the cortex of awake, behaving monkeys. These two advances show promise for developing very long term recording for neural prosthetic applications
Risk of ischemic heart disease after radiotherapy for ductal carcinoma in situ
The use of adjuvant radiotherapy (RT) in the management of ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) is increasing. Left-sided breast irradiation may involve exposure of the heart to ionising radiation, increasing the risk of ischemic heart disease (IHD). We examined the incidence of IHD in a population-based cohort of women with DCIS. The Breast Cancer DataBase Sweden (BCBase) cohort includes women registered with invasive and in situ breast cancers 1992-2012 and age-matched women without a history of breast cancer. In this analysis, 6270 women with DCIS and a comparison cohort of 31,257 women were included. Through linkage with population-based registers, data on comorbidity, socioeconomic status and incidence of IHD was obtained. Hazard ratios (HR) for IHD with 95% confidence intervals (CI) were analysed. Median follow-up time was 8.8 years. The risk of IHD was not increased for women with DCIS versus women in the comparison cohort (HR 0.93; 95% CI 0.82-1.06), after treatment with radiotherapy versus surgery alone (HR 0.77; 95% CI 0.60-0.98) or when analysing RT by laterality (HR 0.85; 95% CI 0.53-1.37 for left-sided versus right-sided RT). The risk of IHD was lower for women with DCIS allocated to RT compared to non-irradiated women and to the comparison cohort, probably due to patient selection. Comparison of RT by laterality did not show any over-risk for irradiation of the left breast.Peer reviewe
Worldline approach to helicity flip in plane waves
We apply worldline methods to the study of vacuum polarisation effects in
plane wave backgrounds, in both scalar and spinor QED. We calculate
helicity-flip probabilities to one loop order and treated exactly in the
background field, and provide a toolkit of methods for use in investigations of
higher-order processes. We also discuss the connections between the worldline,

Reply to Ellis et al.: human niche construction and evolutionary theory
We are pleased Ellis et al. found value in our recent synthesis of the deep history of human impacts on
global ecosystems and agree that our paper should influence the current debate on if and how an Anthropocene epoch is defined. We also agree that the ecological consequences of human niche construction have profound and growing effects on the evolutionary trajectories of humans and other species living within human-altered ecosystems. Niche construction theory (NCT) provides an explicit framework for linking evolutionary and ecological processes into a coherent theory of biological evolution. Of special appeal to us as archaeologists is that NCT bridges biological and cultural evolution by including human culture and social learning within the mechanisms of evolutionary change, allowing scientists to address issues at the interface of human and natural systems. Some of us have contributed significantly to human NCT, addressing some of the very issues raised by Ellis et al. Finally, we agree that human transformations of ecosystems are inherently social processes—clearly humans are intensely social organisms—and that such processes result from long-term melding of biological and cultural evolution
