Isolation of Local Lipolytic Isolate from Domestic Compost

    Get PDF
Screening of lipolytic bacteria from domestic compost resulting an isolate namely AL17. Morphological analysis shows that the isolates were rod shape and belong to negative gram bacteria. The 16S rRNAs genes of the bacteria have been sequenced, and phylogenetic analysis showed that the isolates were close to genus Pseudoxanthomonas. The enzyme production was synchronized with bacterial growth and reached a maximum level during the late-stationary phase. The optimum pH and temperature of enzyme activity were at pH 9.0 and 60°C.The isolate also showed alcohol tolerance in medium containing 3% and 5% methanol. The ability of bacterial cells to tolerate methanol is an important cell characteristic that determines their use as a biocatalyst in transesterification and other industrial process

Novel Archaeal DNA Polymerase B from Domas Hot Spring West Java

    Get PDF
Nine novel archaeal DNA polymerase genes from Domas Hot Spring, West Java have been cloned directly through the natural sample. The characterization of the genes showed that the genes are high homology to the DNA polymerase B of Crenarhaea phyla. Phylogenetic analysis of the amino acid sequences showed that the enzymes are grouped in a new branch from the other Crenarchaea’s DNA Polymerase B. 3D structure analysis of the enzymes show that the structures are closed to the structure of DNA Polymerase B1 from Sulfolobus solfataricus. The nine structures of the enzymes could be grouped into four different structures

Association of hemochromatosis with infectious diseases: expanding spectrum

    Get PDF
SummaryWithholding iron from potential pathogens is a host defense strategy. There is evidence that iron overload per se compromises the ability of phagocytes to kill microorganisms. Several hypotheses exist to explain the association of hemochromatosis with infection. A combination of mechanisms likely contributes to the increase in susceptibility to infection in these patients. A review of the current literature delineating various pathogens to which patients with hemochromatosis are potentially susceptible, and recent advances in the understanding of the association of hemochromatosis with infection, are discussed

Effect of Clark’s twin-block appliance (CTB) and non-extraction fixed mechano-therapy on the pharyngeal dimensions of growing children

Abstract INTRODUCTION: Narrow airway dimensions due to mandibular deficiency can predispose an individual to severe respiratory distress. Hence, treatment with mandibular advancement devices at an early age might help improving the pharyngeal passage and reduce the risk of respiratory difficulties. Therefore, the aim of the current study was to evaluate the mean changes in the pharyngeal dimensions of children with mandibular deficiency treated with Clark\u27s twin-block appliance (CTB) followed by fixed orthodontic treatment. METHODS: Orthodontic records of 42 children with mandibular deficiency were selected. Records comprised three lateral cephalograms taken at the start of CTB treatment, after CTB removal and at the end of fixed appliance treatment, and were compared with 32 controls from the Bolton-Brush study. Friedman test was used to compare pre-treatment, mid-treatment and post-treatment pharyngeal dimensions. Wilcoxon signed rank test was used to compare the airway between pre-treatment and post follow-up controls. Mann-Whitney U test was applied to compare the mean changes in pharyngeal dimensions between treatment group and controls from T2 to T0. Post-hoc Dunnet T3 test was used for multiple comparisons of treatment outcomes after CTB and fixed appliances, taking a p-value of ≤ 0.05 as statistically significant. RESULTS: Superior pharyngeal space (p \u3c 0.001) and upper airway thickness (p = 0.035) were significantly increased after CTB, and the change in superior pharyngeal space remained stable after fixed mechano-therapy. CONCLUSION: CTB can have a positive effect in improving pharyngeal space and the resultant increase in airway remains stable on an average of two and a half years

DNA amplified fingerprinting, a useful tool for determination of genetic origin and diversity analysis in Citrus

We used three short repetitive nucleotide sequences [(GTG)5, (TAC)5, and (GACA)4] either as radiolabeled probes for hybridization with restricted Citrus DNA or as single primers in polymerase chain reaction amplification experiments with total genomic DNA. We tested the ability of the sequences to discriminate between seedlings of zygotic or nuclear origin in the progeny of a Volkamer lemon #Citrus volkameriana# Ten. & Pasq.) tree. The genetic variability within two species [#Citrus sinensis# (L.) Osbeck (sweet oranges) and #Citrus reticulata# Blanco and relatives (mandarins)] was evaluated. DNA amplified figerprinting with single primers was the more successful technique for discriminating between nucellular and zygotic seedlings. Although we were not able to distinguish among 10 cultivars of #C. sinensis#, all 10 #C. reticulata# cultivars tested were distinguishable. However, it still is difficult to identify the putative parents of a hybrid plant when the two parental genomes are closely related. (Résumé d'auteur

BACKGROUND: The present study aimed at assessing the relationship between growth changes in maxillary (MS) and sphenoid sinus (SS) and cervical vertebral maturation (CVM) and to evaluate their reliability and validity in assessing the skeletal maturity of an individual. METHODS: A crosssectional study was conducted on the pretreatment lateral cephalograms of 224 patients (males=116, females=108) aged 8-17 years. MS and SS heights, widths and indices were evaluated. The subjects were classified according to six stages based on CVM using Baccetti\u27s method. Kruskal-Wallis test was applied to compare MS and SS measurements at different cervical stages for each gender. Kappa statistics, positive predictive value, negative predictive value, sensitivity and specificity were calculated to test the diagnostic accuracy of MS and SS indices. RESULTS: The MS and SS indices varied significantly (p\u3c0.001) at different cervical stages for both gender. Kappa statistics showed significant agreement using MS (p\u3c0.001) and SS indices (p\u3c0.05). The diagnostic performance of MS index (Sensitivity ≥71%) was found to be better than SS index (Sensitivity ≥65%).. CONCLUSIONS: The MS height, width and index in genders and SS height, width and index in males and only SS width and index in females were significantly associated with the CVM stages. The validity of MS and SS indices were comparable for females; whereas, the MS index offers significant advantage over SS index for the assessment of growth status of males
