Clinicians as Secondary Users of Patient-Centered Mobile Technology in Complex Healthcare Settings
This paper describes the preliminary research findings and prototype development of a Personal Health Record mobile application. A pilot study about patient-clinician interaction guided by common ground theory was performed. The goal of the pilot study was to gather requirements to support development of a smartphone application to be used in a future experimental study. Findings from the pilot study suggest that smartphones could be used to manage health information considered important for a successful healthcare consultation
Advancing Critical Care in the ICU: A Human-Centered Biomedical Data Visualization Systems
The purpose of this research is to provide medical clinicians with a new technology for interpreting large and diverse datasets to expedite critical care decision-making in the ICU. We refer to this technology as the medical information visualization assistant (MIVA). MIVA delivers multivariate biometric (bedside) data via a visualization display by transforming and organizing it into temporal resolutions that can provide contextual knowledge to clinicians. The result is a spatial organization of multiple datasets that allows rapid analysis and interpretation of trends. Findings from the usability study of the MIVA static prototype and heuristic inspection of the dynamic prototype suggest that using MIVA can yield faster and more accurate results. Furthermore, comments from the majority of the experimental group and the heuristic inspectors indicate that MIVA can facilitate clinical task flow in context-dependent health care settings
Terpene Composition Complexity Controls Secondary Organic Aerosol Yields from Scots Pine Volatile Emissions
Secondary organic aerosol (SOA) impact climate by scattering and absorbing radiation and contributing to cloud formation. SOA models are based on studies of simplified chemical systems that do not account for the chemical complexity in the atmosphere. This study investigated SOA formation from a mixture of real Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris) emissions including a variety of monoterpenes and sesquiterpenes. SOA generation was characterized from different combinations of volatile compounds as the plant emissions were altered with an herbivore stress treatment. During active herbivore feeding, monoterpene and sesquiterpene emissions increased, but SOA mass yields decreased after accounting for absorption effects. SOA mass yields were controlled by sesquiterpene emissions in healthy plants. In contrast, SOA mass yields from stressed plant emissions were controlled by the specific blend of monoterpene emissions. Conservative estimates using a box model approach showed a 1.5- to 2.3-fold aerosol enhancement when the terpene complexity was taken into account. This enhancement was relative to the commonly used model monoterpene, "alpha-pinene". These results suggest that simplifying terpene complexity in SOA models could lead to underpredictions in aerosol mass loading.Peer reviewe
Healthcare Game Design: Behavioral Modeling of Serious Gaming Design for Children with Chronic Diseases
This article introduces the design principles of serious games for chronic patients based on behavioral models. First, key features of the targeted chronic condition (Diabetes) are explained. Then, the role of psychological behavioral models in the management of chronic conditions is covered. After a short review of the existing health focused games, two recent health games that are developed based on behavioral models are overviewed in more detail. Furthermore, design principles and usability issues regarding the creation of these health games are discussed. Finally, the authors conclude that designing healthcare games based on behavioral models can increase the usability of the game in order to improve the effectiveness of the game’s desired healthcare outcomes
Being there: a preliminary study examining the role of presence in Internet Gaming Disorder
Internet Gaming Disorder (IGD) has been introduced as an emerging mental health condition requiring further study. Associations between IGD and gaming presence (i.e., absorption in the virtual environment) have been implied. The aim of the present study was twofold: (a) to evaluate the extent to which presence contributes to IGD severity and, (b) to examine longitudinal differences in IGD according to the initial level of presence experienced. The participants comprising 125 emerging adults aged 18 to 29 years completed either: (i) three face-to-face assessments (one month apart, over three months) or (ii) a cross-sectional, online assessment. IGD was assessed with the nine-item IGD Scale Short Form and presence was assessed using the Presence Questionnaire. Regression and latent growth modelling analyses were conducted. Findings demonstrated that the level of gaming presence related to IGD severity but not to linear change in severity over a three-month period. The study shows that emergent adults who play internet games may be at a high risk of IGD given a more salient sense of being present within the gaming environment. Clinical implications considering prevention and intervention initiatives are discussed
Hypoglycemic Detection by Human Breath: A Mobile Health App that Alerts Diabetics of Low Blood Glucose
Low blood glucose (BG) or hypoglycemia (HYPO) can lead to severe health complications such as weakness and unconsciousness. To avoid problems BG self-management is needed. We developed a non-invasive breathing system (HYPOalert) to detect HYPO in human-breath, that sends warning alerts and data visualization to monitor progress. This paper presents two HYPOalert prototype iterations with testing results. Of 14 Type 1/2 diabetics tested, only 10% were pleased with existing monitoring systems and 85% expressed interest in using HYPOalert more than 20x a day. The usability study showed that 92% agreed-strongly agreed with the HYPOalert design, including color/menus/navigation/typography; and 64% felt positive about the apps consistency, flexibility, and info architecture. A post-test survey provided a satisfaction score: 6.64/10, with an open-ended interview showing that HYPOalert could positively impact lifestyle practices, self-managing, and help advance an understanding of the disease

Internet Gaming Disorder Behaviors in emergent adulthood: a pilot study examining the interplay between anxiety and family cohesion
Understanding risk and protective factors associated with Internet Gaming Disorder (IGD) has been highlighted as a research priority by the American Psychiatric Association, (2013). The present study focused on the potential IGD risk effect of anxiety and the buffering role of family cohesion on this association. A sample of emerging adults all of whom were massively multiplayer online (MMO) gamers (18–29 years) residing in Australia were assessed longitudinally (face-to-face: N = 61, Mage = 23.02 years, SD = 3.43) and cross-sectionally (online: N = 64, Mage = 23.34 years, SD = 3.39). IGD symptoms were assessed using the nine-item Internet Gaming Disorder Scale-Short Form (IGDS-SF9; Pontes & Griffiths Computers in Human Behavior, 45, 137–143. https://doi.org/10.1016/j.chb.2014.12.006, 2015). The Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI; Beck and Steer, 1990) and the balanced family cohesion scale (BFC; Olson Journal of Marital & Family Therapy, 3(1) 64–80. https://doi.org/10.1111/j.1752-0606.2009.00175.x, 2011) were applied to assess anxiety and BFC levels, respectively. Birth prevalence of right ventricular outflow tract abnormalities in the recipient twin of monochorionic twin pregnancies complicated by twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome: amnioreduction versus foetoscopic laser coagulation treatment
Objective. Right Ventricular Outflow Tract Abnormalities (RVOTA) as pulmonary stenosis, atresia and insufficiency are typical cardiac anomalies of recipient twins (RTs) in untreated monochorionic diamniotic twin (MC/DA) pregnancies complicated by twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome (TTTS), af-fecting 8-12% of cases. The aim of this study was to compare birth RVOTA prevalence in TTTS pregnancies treated by foetoscopic laser surgery (FLS) versus by serial amniore-ductions (AR). Materials and Methods. We conducted a retrospective analysis of neonatal medical records of TTTS referred to our centre to receive treatment. Serial ARs were the treatment up to 2004, when FLS has become the treatment. Neonatal cardiac outcomes were reviewed to assess RVOTA prevalence. Results. Neonatal cardiac outcomes were available in 354 MC twins complicated by TTTS: 309 (87%) were treated by FLS and 45 (13%) by AR. All cases of RVOTA at birth involved the RT. Among 253 RTs born alive, 13 cases (5.1%) had RVOTA at birth. In FLS group, 221 (71%) RTs were born alive and 10 (4.5%) with RVOTA. In the AR group, 32 (71%) RTs were born alive and 3 (9.4%) with RVOTA. Occurrence of RVOTA was halved in FLS group (FLS = 4.5% vs AR = 9.4%, respectively) but this reduction did not reach statistical significance (P-value = 0.22). Conclusions. In our experience, treatment for TTTS by FLS versus by AR was suggestive of a lower birth-rate of RVOTA in recipient twins but did not elim-inate it completely. Therefore, TTTS represents an indication for careful postnatal cardiologic evaluation, including an echocardiography, regardless of the type of prenatal treatment received
