LCrowdV: Generating Labeled Videos for Simulation-based Crowd Behavior Learning
We present a novel procedural framework to generate an arbitrary number of
labeled crowd videos (LCrowdV). The resulting crowd video datasets are used to
design accurate algorithms or training models for crowded scene understanding.
Our overall approach is composed of two components: a procedural simulation
framework for generating crowd movements and behaviors, and a procedural
rendering framework to generate different videos or images. Each video or image
is automatically labeled based on the environment, number of pedestrians,
density, behavior, flow, lighting conditions, viewpoint, noise, etc.
Furthermore, we can increase the realism by combining synthetically-generated
behaviors with real-world background videos. We demonstrate the benefits of
LCrowdV over prior lableled crowd datasets by improving the accuracy of
pedestrian detection and crowd behavior classification algorithms. LCrowdV

HD 51106 and HD 50747: an ellipsoidal binary and a triple system observed with CoRoT
We present an analysis of the observations of HD 51106 and HD 50747 by the
satellite CoRoT, obtained during its initial run, and of the spectroscopic
preparatory observations.
AIMS: We complete an analysis of the light curve, extract the main
frequencies observed, and discuss some preliminary interpretations about the
stars.
Methods: We used standard Fourier transform and pre-whitening methods to
extract information about the periodicities of the stars.
Results: HD 51106 is an ellipsoidal binary, the light curve of which can be
completely explained by the tidal deformation of the star and smaller secondary
effects. HD 50747 is a triple system containing a variable star, which exhibits
many modes of oscillation with periods in the range of a few hours. On the
basis of this period range and the analysis of the physical parameters of the

A Temporal Role Of Type I Interferon Signaling in CD8+ T Cell Maturation during Acute West Nile Virus Infection
A genetic absence of the common IFN- α/β signaling receptor (IFNAR) in mice is associated with enhanced viral replication and altered adaptive immune responses. However, analysis of IFNAR-/- mice is limited for studying the functions of type I IFN at discrete stages of viral infection. To define the temporal functions of type I IFN signaling in the context of infection by West Nile virus (WNV), we treated mice with MAR1-5A3, a neutralizing, non cell-depleting anti-IFNAR antibody. Inhibition of type I IFN signaling at or before day 2 after infection was associated with markedly enhanced viral burden, whereas treatment at day 4 had substantially less effect on WNV dissemination. While antibody treatment prior to infection resulted in massive expansion of virus-specific CD8+ T cells, blockade of type I IFN signaling starting at day 4 induced dysfunctional CD8+ T cells with depressed cytokine responses and expression of phenotypic markers suggesting exhaustion. Thus, only the later maturation phase of anti-WNV CD8+ T cell development requires type I IFN signaling. WNV infection experiments in BATF3-/- mice, which lack CD8-α dendritic cells and have impaired priming due to inefficient antigen cross-presentation, revealed a similar effect of blocking IFN signaling on CD8+ T cell maturation. Collectively, our results suggest that cell non-autonomous type I IFN signaling shapes maturation of antiviral CD8+ T cell response at a stage distinct from the initial priming event
Contemporary understanding of riots: classical crowd psychology, ideology and the social identity approach
This article explores the origins and ideology of classical crowd psychology, a body of theory reflected in contemporary popularised understandings such as of the 2011 English ‘riots’. This article argues that during the nineteenth century, the crowd came to symbolise a fear of ‘mass society’ and that ‘classical’ crowd psychology was a product of these fears. Classical crowd psychology pathologised, reified and decontextualised the crowd, offering the ruling elites a perceived opportunity to control it. We contend that classical theory misrepresents crowd psychology and survives in contemporary understanding because it is ideological. We conclude by discussing how classical theory has been supplanted in academic contexts by an identity-based crowd psychology that restores the meaning to crowd action, replaces it in its social context and in so doing transforms theoretical understanding of ‘riots’ and the nature of the self
Social relations in crowds: recognition, validation and solidarity
Social identity research on crowds demonstrates how cognitive self-definition as a crowd member results in conformity to identity-relevant norms. Less research addresses the social-relational changes within a crowd and how these impact collective experience positively. The present study investigates these processes at a month-long mass gathering in India. Analysis of 37 interviews with participants attending the annual Magh Mela pilgrimage evidences the concept of shared identity as underpinning their understanding of this mass gathering. Moreover, a theoretically-derived thematic analysis of these interviews shows the value of the analytic concepts of recognition, validation, and solidarity in illuminating the ways in which social relations in the crowd were experienced and contributed to the experience of the event. Through exploring the multi-dimensional nature of relational connectedness in crowds we contribute to an understanding of crowd experience and group processes
Objective and Subjective Components of the First-Night Effect in Young Nightmare Sufferers and Healthy Participants
The first-night effect—marked differences between the first- and the second-night sleep spent in a
laboratory—is a widely known phenomenon that accounts for the common practice of excluding
the first-night sleep from any polysomnographic analysis. The extent to which the first-night effect
is present in a participant, as well as its duration (1 or more nights), might have diagnostic value
and should account for different protocols used for distinct patient groups. This study investigated
the first-night effect on nightmare sufferers (NM; N D 12) and healthy controls .N D 15/ using
both objective (2-night-long polysomnography) and subjective (Groningen Sleep Quality Scale
for the 2 nights spent in the laboratory and 1 regular night spent at home) methods. Differences
were found in both the objective (sleep efficiency, wakefulness after sleep onset, sleep latency,
Stage-1 duration, Stage-2 duration, slow-wave sleep duration, and REM duration) and subjective
(self-rating) variables between the 2 nights and the 2 groups, with a more pronounced first-night
effect in the case of the NM group. Furthermore, subjective sleep quality was strongly related to
polysomnographic variables and did not differ among 1 regular night spent at home and the second
night spent in the laboratory. The importance of these results is discussed from a diagnostic point
of view
Validity and reliability of a french version of the olfactory disorders questionnaire.
peer reviewed[en] OBJECTIVE: To validate a French version of the Olfactory Disorders Questionnaire (Fr-ODQ).
METHODS: Patients with olfactory disorder (OD) and controls were enrolled from two medical centers. Individuals completed the Fr-ODQ and the French version of the sinonasal outcome tool-22 (SNOT-22). The extended Sniffin'Sticks procedure was used to test odor Threshold, Discrimination, and Identification (TDI). Cronbach's alpha was used to measure the internal consistency of Fr-ODQ. The reliability and the external validity were evaluated through a test-retest approach and by correlating Fr-ODQ and SNOT-22 scores.
RESULTS: Eighty-nine patients with OD and 65 healthy individuals completed the evaluations. The Cronbach's alpha was 0.827, reporting adequate internal consistency. The test-retest reliability was high (rs = 0.944, p = 0.001). The external validity was adequate regarding the significant correlation between Fr-ODQ and SNOT-22 (rs = 0.498; p = 0.001). Patients with OD reported a significant higher score of Fr-ODQ than healthy individuals (p < 0.001), indicating a high internal validity. The baseline Fr-ODQ significantly improved after 3-month olfactory training, which corroborated the improvement of TDI scores.
CONCLUSION: The Fr-ODQ is the first patient-reported outcome questionnaire validated for French speaking patients. Fr-ODQ is reliable and valid for the evaluation of the olfactory dysfunction and the related impact on quality of life of French-speaking patients
Perceived responder legitimacy and group identification predict cooperation and compliance in a mass decontamination field exercise
Emergency responders’ failure to communicate effectively during decontamination following a chemical or biological incident has been associated with increased public anxiety and reduced public compliance. In this study we applied the social identity approach to evaluating a field exercise that involved mass decontamination. Questionnaires were collected from 115 volunteers, who participated in the exercise as simulated casualties. Volunteers’ perceptions of effective responder communication predicted increased self-reported compliance with decontamination, mediated by perceived responder legitimacy and identification with other group members. Developing effective communication strategies using a social psychology perspective could improve the way in which incidents are managed
Selective blockade of interferon-α and -β reveals their non-redundant functions in a mouse model of West Nile virus infection
Although type I interferons (IFNs) were first described almost 60 years ago, the ability to monitor and modulate the functional activities of the individual IFN subtypes that comprise this family has been hindered by a lack of reagents. The major type I IFNs, IFN-β and the multiple subtypes of IFN-α, are expressed widely and induce their effects on cells by interacting with a shared heterodimeric receptor (IFNAR). In the mouse, the physiologic actions of IFN-α and IFN-β have been defined using polyclonal anti-type I IFN sera, by targeting IFNAR using monoclonal antibodies or knockout mice, or using Ifnb-/- mice. However, the corresponding analysis of IFN-α has been difficult because of its polygenic nature. Herein, we describe two monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) that differentially neutralize murine IFN-β or multiple subtypes of murine IFN-α. Using these mAbs, we distinguish specific contributions of IFN-β versus IFN-α in restricting viral pathogenesis and identify IFN-α as the key mediator of the antiviral response in mice infected with West Nile virus. This study thus suggests the utility of these new reagents in dissecting the antiviral and immunomodulatory roles of IFN-β versus IFN-α in murine models of infection, immunity, and autoimmunity
