Motivational Social Visualizations for Personalized E-Learning

A large number of educational resources is now available on the Web to support both regular classroom learning and online learning. However, the abundance of available content produces at least two problems: how to help students find the most appropriate resources, and how to engage them into using these resources and benefiting from them. Personalized and social learning have been suggested as potential methods for addressing these problems. Our work presented in this paper attempts to combine the ideas of personalized and social learning. We introduce Progressor + , an innovative Web-based interface that helps students find the most relevant resources in a large collection of self-assessment questions and programming examples. We also present the results of a classroom study of the Progressor +  in an undergraduate class. The data revealed the motivational impact of the personalized social guidance provided by the system in the target context. The interface encouraged students to explore more educational resources and motivated them to do some work ahead of the course schedule. The increase in diversity of explored content resulted in improving students’ problem solving success. A deeper analysis of the social guidance mechanism revealed that it is based on the leading behavior of the strong students, who discovered the most relevant resources and created trails for weaker students to follow. The study results also demonstrate that students were more engaged with the system: they spent more time in working with self-assessment questions and annotated examples, attempted more questions, and achieved higher success rates in answering them

Experimental and theoretical investigation of molecular structure and conformation of the 4-isopropylthioxanthone

In this study, the molecular structure and conformational analyses of the 4-isopropylthioxanthone (4-ITX) are reported according to experimental and theoretical results. The compound crystallizes in the centrosymmetric PView the MathML source space group with only one molecule in the asymmetric unit, presenting the most stable conformation, in which the three fused-rings adopt a planar geometry, and the isopropyl group assumes a torsional angle with less sterical hindrance. The structural and conformational analyses were performed using theoretical calculations such as Hartree–Fock (HF), DFT method in combination with 6-311G(d,p) and 6-31++G(d,p) and the results were compared with infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The supramolecular assembly of 4-ITX is kept by non-classical C-H⋯O hydrogen bonds and weak interactions such as π-π stacking. 4-ITX was also studied by 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopy. UV-Vis absorption spectroscopic properties of the 4-ITX showed the long-wavelength maximum shifts towards high energy when the solvent polarity increases.FAPESP (09/08131-1)CNPqCAPES/PROE

Testbed on MANET (ToM): private testbed facility for MANET Experiment

This article aims to share how to create a minimum MANET testbed facility as a requirement for evaluation of MANET research. Testbed facility that we have developed is called as Testbed on MANET or abbreviation ToM. We chose to use single board computer (SBC) to represent mobile devices in MANET. ToM facility and can be used either in a static mesh network or in a dynamic network topology, where each node in the testbed can move according to the needs of the researcher. To realize a real world node mobility in ToM, we use mobile robot technology and mobile robot that we have develop, where we named it as ToMRobot. Our experience in developing a ToM facility proves that with today’s technological developments, the private MANET testbed facility can be developed more easily at low cost

A Dynamical Relay Node placement Solution for MANETs

    Get PDF
Network deployment in wireless networks implies the distribution of the communication nodes to improve some key operational aspects, such as energy saving, coverage, connectivity, or simply reducing the network cost. Most node placement approaches are focused on static scenarios like WSNs, where the topology of the network does not vary over time. Nevertheless, there exist certain situations in which the network node locations can continuously change. In this case, the use of special nodes, so-called Relay Nodes (RNs), contributes to supporting, maintaining or recovering communication in the network. The present work introduces a multi-stage dynamical RN placement solution to lead the RNs to their time-varying optimized positions. The approach, named Dynamical Relay Node placement Solution (DRNS), is based on the use of Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) algorithms and is inspired by Model Predictive Control (MPC) techniques following a bi-objective optimization procedure, where both network connectivity and throughput are jointly maximized. DRNS is validated in both simulated and real environments composed of mobile robotic nodes, the results showing its goodness and operational suitability for real MANET environments

Improving results of forensics analysis by semantic-based suggestion system

    No full text
Nowadays, more than ever, digital forensics activities are involved in any criminal, civil or military investigation and they are primary to support cyber-security. Detectives use a many techniques and proprietary forensic software to analyze (copies of) digital devices, in order to discover hidden, deleted, encrypted, and damaged files or folders. Any evidence found is carefully analysed and documented in “finding reports” that are used during lawsuits. Forensics aim at discovering and analysing patterns of fraudulent activities. In this work, we propose a methodology that supports detectives in correlating evidences found by different forensic tools and we apply it to a framework able to semantically annotate data generated by forensics tools. Annotations enable more effective access to relevant information and enhanced retrieval and reasoning. © Springer International Publishing AG 2018
