User-driven design of robot costume for child-robot interactions among children with cognitive impairment
The involvement of arts and psychology elements in robotics research for children with cognitive impairment is still limited. However, the combination of robots, arts, psychology and education in the development of robots could significantly contribute to the improvement of social interaction skills among children with cognitive impairment. In this article, we would like to share our work on building and innovating the costume of LUCA's robot, which incorporating the positive psychological perspectives and arts values for children with cognitive impairment. Our goals are (1) to educate arts students in secondary arts school on the importance of social robot appearance for children with cognitive impairment, and (2) to select the best costume for future child-robot interaction study with children with cognitive impairments
Parameterized Model-Checking for Timed-Systems with Conjunctive Guards (Extended Version)
In this work we extend the Emerson and Kahlon's cutoff theorems for process
skeletons with conjunctive guards to Parameterized Networks of Timed Automata,
i.e. systems obtained by an \emph{apriori} unknown number of Timed Automata
instantiated from a finite set of Timed Automata templates.
In this way we aim at giving a tool to universally verify software systems
where an unknown number of software components (i.e. processes) interact with
continuous time temporal constraints. It is often the case, indeed, that
distributed algorithms show an heterogeneous nature, combining dynamic aspects
with real-time aspects. In the paper we will also show how to model check a
protocol that uses special variables storing identifiers of the participating
processes (i.e. PIDs) in Timed Automata with conjunctive guards. This is
non-trivial, since solutions to the parameterized verification problem often
relies on the processes to be symmetric, i.e. indistinguishable. On the other
side, many popular distributed algorithms make use of PIDs and thus cannot
directly apply those solutions
Algorithms for outerplanar graph roots and graph roots of pathwidth at most 2
Deciding whether a given graph has a square root is a classical problem that
has been studied extensively both from graph theoretic and from algorithmic
perspectives. The problem is NP-complete in general, and consequently
substantial effort has been dedicated to deciding whether a given graph has a
square root that belongs to a particular graph class. There are both
polynomial-time solvable and NP-complete cases, depending on the graph class.
We contribute with new results in this direction. Given an arbitrary input
graph G, we give polynomial-time algorithms to decide whether G has an
outerplanar square root, and whether G has a square root that is of pathwidth
at most 2
Regulation of pancreatic β-cell insulin secretion by actin cytoskeleton remodelling: role of gelsolin and cooperation with the MAPK signalling pathway
We have previously isolated two MIN6 beta-cell sublines, B1, highly responsive to glucose-stimulated insulin secretion, and C3, markedly refractory (Lilla, V., Webb, G., Rickenbach, K., Maturana, A., Steiner, D. F., Halban, P. A. and Irminger, J. C. (2003) Endocrinology 144, 1368-1379). We now demonstrate that C3 cells have substantially increased amounts of F-actin stress fibres whereas B1 cells have shorter cortical F-actin. Consistent with these data, B1 cells display glucose-dependent actin remodelling whereas, in C3 cells, F-actin is refractory to this secretagogue. Furthermore, F-actin depolymerisation with latrunculin B restores glucose-stimulated insulin secretion in C3 cells. In parallel, glucose-stimulated ERK1/2 activation is greater in B1 than in C3 cells, and is potentiated in both sublines following F-actin depolymerisation. Glucose-activated phosphoERK1/2 accumulates at actin filament tips adjacent to the plasma membrane, indicating that these are the main sites of action for this kinase during insulin secretion. In addition, B1 cell expression of the calcium-dependent F-actin severing protein gelsolin is >100-fold higher than that of C3 cells. Knock-down of gelsolin reduced glucose-stimulated insulin secretion, whereas gelsolin over-expression potentiated secretion from B1 cells. Gelsolin localised along depolymerised actin fibres after glucose stimulation. Taken together, these data demonstrate that F-actin reorganization prior to insulin secretion requires gelsolin and plays a role in the glucose-dependent MAPK signal transduction that regulates beta-cell insulin secretion

Economics in West African Irrigated-Rice Production
The main objective of this investigation is to contribute to the ongoing debate on the effects of the West African Economic and Monetary Union (WAEMU), common external tariff (CET) measures on the competitiveness of the irrigated-rice production system in Niger. The policy analysis matrix (PAM) approach was used to evaluate the various policy effects, based on farm-level, postharvest and rice-marketing data, as well as the financial and economic parity prices of different brands of imported-rice. Results from the PAM base-scenario model showed that under the evaluated CET policy irrigated rice production, activities were competitive and private operators had positive financial gains, meaning that private profitability was positive. Moreover, the irrigated-rice production enterprise revealed positive economic profitability for both retailers and wholesalers. Thus, it generated a net positive income for the national economy per unit of land devoted to this activity. One can argue that the irrigated rice system under the CET was generally competitive (positive private profitability) and had a potential for growth (positive economic profitability). Despite its competitiveness and efficiency, the irrigated rice production system still performs below potential because it lacks additional incentives. Some sensitivity analyses were performed with single-factor and simultaneous changes of several factors, which confirmed the necessity of providing further incentives to the system. The research results suggest that greater incentives should be given in terms of improving marketing channels, especially for retail rice marketing in which a great number of women rice traders are active.L'étude vise à contribuer au débat relatif aux effets du tarif extérieur commun (TEC) de l'Union économique et monétaire Ouest-Africaine (UEMOA) sur la compétitivité du riz irrigué au Niger. La Matrice d'analyse des politiques (MAP) a été utilisé pour évaluer les différents effets, sur la base de données relatives à l'exploitation agricole, les activités post-récolte, la commercialisation, ainsi que les prix paritaires financiers et économiques de différents types de riz importés. Avec le TEC, les résultats du modèle de base de la MAP ont montré que la production de riz irrigué a été compétitive et que les acteurs de la chaîne de valeurs ont bénéficié de gains financiers importants (rentabilité financière positive). Par ailleurs, la production de riz irrigué a été une activité économiquement rentable, aussi bien pour les commerçants-détaillants que pour les grossistes. Par conséquent, par unité de terre dévolue à cette activité, le riz irrigué a généré des revenus pour l'économie nationale. Avec le TEC, le système de production de riz irrigué a été généralement compétitif (rentabilité financière positive) et a eu un bon potentiel de croissance économique (rentabilité économique positive). Cependant, malgré, sa compétitivité et son efficacité, la performance du système de production de riz irrigué reste en deçà de son potentiel, du fait du manque d'incitations additionnelles. Des analyses de sensibilité ont été effectuées avec le changement de niveau d'un seul facteur, et de plusieurs facteurs à la fois. Ces analyses confirment la nécessité de mesures incitatives, en termes d'amélioration des circuits de commercialisation, notamment le circuit des détaillants qui implique un nombre assez important de commerçantes.Mots clés: Analyse des politiques, production de riz irrigué, avantage comparatif, rentabilité économique, rentabilité financièr
On Turing dynamical systems and the Atiyah problem
Main theorems of the article concern the problem of M. Atiyah on possible
values of l^2-Betti numbers. It is shown that all non-negative real numbers are
l^2-Betti numbers, and that "many" (for example all non-negative algebraic)
real numbers are l^2-Betti numbers of simply connected manifolds with respect
to a free cocompact action. Also an explicit example is constructed which leads
to a simply connected manifold with a transcendental l^2-Betti number with
respect to an action of the threefold direct product of the lamplighter group
Z/2 wr Z. The main new idea is embedding Turing machines into integral group
rings. The main tool developed generalizes known techniques of spectral
computations for certain random walk operators to arbitrary operators in

Ameliorating impaired cardiac function in myocardial infarction using exosome-loaded gallic-acid-containing polyurethane scaffolds
Myocardial infarction (MI) can be tackled by implanting cardiac patches which provide mechanical support to the heart. However, most tissue-engineered scaffolds face difficulty in attenuating oxidative stress, maintaining mechanical stability, and regenerating damaged cardiomyocytes. Here, we fabricated elastic cryogels using polyurethane modified with antioxidant gallic acid in its backbone (PUGA) and further coated them with decellularized extracellular matrix (dECM) to improve adhesiveness, biocompatibility and hemocompatibility. The scaffold was functionalized with exosomes (EXO) isolated from adipose-derived stem cells having regenerative potential. PUGA-dECM + EXO was tested in a rat model with induced MI where echocardiography after 8 weeks of implantation showed significant recovery in treatment group. Histological analysis revealed a decrease in fibrosis after application of patch and promotion of angiogenesis with reduced oxidative stress was shown by immunostaining. Expression of cardiac tissue contractile function marker was also observed in treatment groups. Thus, the proposed biomaterial has a promising application to be utilized as a patch for cardiac regeneration. More detailed studies with larger animal species are needed for using these observations for specific applications
Large-Scale Structures Behind the Milky Way from Near-IR Surveys
About 25% of the optical extragalactic sky is obscured by the dust and stars
of our Milky Way. Dynamically important structures might still lie hidden in
this zone. Various approaches are presently being employed to uncover the
galaxy distribution in the Zone of Avoidance (ZOA) but all suffer from
(different) limitations and selection effects.
We investigated the potential of using the DENIS NIR survey for studies of
galaxies behind the obscuration layer of our Milky Way and for mapping the
Galactic extinction. As a pilot study, we recovered DENIS I, J and K band
images of heavily obscured but optically still visible galaxies. We determined
the I, J and K band luminosity functions of galaxies on three DENIS strips that
cross the center of the nearby, low-latitude, rich cluster Abell 3627. The
extinction-corrected I-J and J-K colours of these cluster galaxies compare well
with that of an unobscured cluster. We searched for and identified galaxies at
latitudes where the Milky Way remains fully opaque (|b|
4-5mag) - in a systematic search as well as around positions of galaxies
detected with the blind HI survey of the ZOA currently conducted with the

Irradiation of Materials with Short, Intense Ion pulses at NDCX-II
We present an overview of the performance of the Neutralized Drift
Compression Experiment-II (NDCX-II) accelerator at Berkeley Lab, and report on
recent target experiments on beam driven melting and transmission ion energy
loss measurements with nanosecond and millimeter-scale ion beam pulses and thin
tin foils. Bunches with around 10^11 ions, 1-mm radius, and 2-30 ns FWHM
duration have been created with corresponding fluences in the range of 0.1 to
0.7 J/cm^2. To achieve these short pulse durations and mm-scale focal spot
radii, the 1.1 MeV He+ ion beam is neutralized in a drift compression section,
which removes the space charge defocusing effect during final compression and
focusing. The beam space charge and drift compression techniques resemble
necessary beam conditions and manipulations in heavy ion inertial fusion
accelerators. Quantitative comparison of detailed particle-in-cell simulations
with the experiment play an important role in optimizing accelerator
