    Heterodera Latipons on Barley in Jordan

    A survey of major barley-growing areas in Jordan was conducted to determine the prevalence and degree of infestation of the Mediterranean cereal cyst nematode (MCCN) Heterodera latipons. The nematode was found in several locations in the northern and southern Mediterranean and the eastern desert areas of Jordan, but it was not detected in the northern Jordan valley and the southern desert areas. In those areas where the cyst nematode occurred, the incidence varied between areas from 30 to 100%. The degree of infestation varied from moderate to very severe. Infestation was most severe in the fields of the Northern Mediterranean area. The MCCN completed one life cycle per growing season. Studies on three isolates of the nematode from three areas, Ar-Ramtha, Madaba, and Al- Karak, revealed that the morphometrics varied little among these isolates. These three isolates as a whole varied in their virulence to two commonly used barley cultivars, Rum and Acsade 106, being more virulent on cv. Rum than on cv. Acsade 106. However, the isolates also varied among each other in their virulence to the same cultivar, Ar-Ramtha being the most virulent on cv. Rum, Madaba the most virulent on cv. Acsade 106

    A cross-sectional study confirms temporary post-COVID-19 vaccine menstrual irregularity and the associated physiological changes among vaccinated women in Jordan

    Background: COVID-19 vaccines continue to save people’s lives around the world; however, some vaccine adverse events have been a major concern which slowed down vaccination campaigns. Anecdotal evidence pointed to the vaccine effect on menstruation but evidence from the adverse event reporting systems and the biomedical literature was lacking. This study aimed to investigate the physiological changes in women during menstruation amid the COVID-19 vaccination. Methods: A cross-sectional online survey was distributed to COVID-19 vaccinated women from Nov 2021 to Jan 2022. The results were analyzed using the SPSS software. Results: Among the 564 vaccinated women, 52% experienced significant menstrual irregularities post-vaccination compared to before regardless of the vaccine type. The kind of menstrual irregularity varied among the vaccinated women, for example, 33% had earlier menstruation, while 35% reported delayed menstruation. About 31% experienced heavier menstruation, whereas 24% had lighter menstrual flow. About 29% had menstruation last longer, but 13% had it shorter than usual. Noteworthy, the menstrual irregularities were more frequent after the second vaccine shot, and they disappeared within 3 months on average. Interestingly, 24% of the vaccinated women reported these irregularities to their gynecologist. Conclusion: The COVID-19 vaccine may cause physiological disturbances during menstruation. Luckily, these irregularities were short-termed and should not be a reason for vaccine hesitancy in women. Further studies are encouraged to unravel the COVID-19 vaccine adverse effect on women’s health

    Coordinated interplay between palmitoylation, phosphorylation and SUMOylation regulates kainate receptor surface expression

    Kainate receptors (KARs) are key regulators of neuronal excitability and synaptic transmission. KAR surface expression is tightly controlled in part by post-translational modifications (PTMs) of the GluK2 subunit. We have shown previously that agonist activation of GluK2-containing KARs leads to phosphorylation of GluK2 at S868, which promotes subsequent SUMOylation at K886 and receptor endocytosis. Furthermore, GluK2 has been shown to be palmitoylated. However, how the interplay between palmitoylation, phosphorylation and SUMOylation orchestrate KAR trafficking remains unclear. Here, we used a library of site-specific GluK2 mutants to investigate the interrelationship between GluK2 PTMs, and their impact on KAR surface expression. We show that GluK2 is basally palmitoylated and that this is decreased by kainate (KA) stimulation. Moreover, a non-palmitoylatable GluK2 mutant (C858/C871A) shows enhanced S868 phosphorylation and K886 SUMOylation under basal conditions and is insensitive to KA-induced internalisation. These results indicate that GluK2 palmitoylation contributes to stabilising KAR surface expression and that dynamic depalmitoylation promotes downstream phosphorylation and SUMOylation to mediate activity-dependent KAR endocytosis

    Controlled release from zein matrices: Interplay of drug hydrophobicity and pH

    Purpose: In earlier studies, the corn protein zein is found to be suitable as a sustained release agent, yet the range of drugs for which zein has been studied remains small. Here, zein is used as a sole excipient for drugs differing in hydrophobicity and isoelectric point: indomethacin, paracetamol and ranitidine. Methods: Caplets were prepared by hot-melt extrusion (HME) and injection moulding (IM). Each of the three model drugs were tested on two drug loadings in various dissolution media. The physical state of the drug, microstructure and hydration behaviour were investigated to build up understanding for the release behaviour from zein based matrix for drug delivery. Results: Drug crystallinity of the caplets increases with drug hydrophobicity. For ranitidine and indomethacin, swelling rates, swelling capacity and release rates were pH dependent as a consequence of the presence of charged groups on the drug molecules. Both hydration rates and release rates could be approached by existing models. Conclusion: Both the drug state as pH dependant electrostatic interactions are hypothesised to influence release kinetics. Both factors can potentially be used factors influencing release kinetics release, thereby broadening the horizon for zein as a tuneable release agent

    Science Verification for the VISIR Upgrade

    The Very Large Telescope spectrometer and imager for the mid-infrared (VISIR) was upgraded in 2015 with new detectors and several new modes were added. Science Verification (SV) is carried out for new ESO instruments as well as for substantial upgrades to existing instruments. Sparse aperture masking and coronagraphy in the mid infrared have now been added to VISIR’s capabilities and during SV these new observational modes, together with the recommissioned burst mode, were used to demonstrate the observational capabilities of the instrument. The SV process for VISIR is briefly described and some results from the successful observations are presented. All SV data are publicly available

    The kinematic signature of the Galactic warp in Gaia DR1 : I. the H ipparcos subsample

    Reproduced with permission from Astronomy & Astrophysics, © 2017 ESO.Context. The mechanism responsible for the warp of our Galaxy, as well as its dynamical nature, continues to remain unknown. With the advent of high precision astrometry, new horizons have been opened for detecting the kinematics associated with the warp and for constraining possible warp formation scenarios for the Milky Way. Aims. The aim of this contribution is to establish whether the first Gaia data release (DR1) shows significant evidence of the kinematic signature expected from a long-lived Galactic warp in the kinematics of distant OB stars. As the first paper in a series, we present our approach for analyzing the proper motions and apply it to the subsample of Hipparcos stars. Methods. We select a sample of 989 distant spectroscopically-identified OB stars from the new reduction of Hipparcos, of which 758 are also in the first Gaia data release (DR1), covering distances from 0.5 to 3 kpc from the Sun. We develop a model of the spatial distribution and kinematics of the OB stars from which we produce the probability distribution functions of the proper motions, with and without the systematic motions expected from a long-lived warp. A likelihood analysis is used to compare the expectations of the models with the observed proper motions from both Hipparcos and Gaia DR1. Results. We find that the proper motions of the nearby OB stars are consistent with the signature of a kinematic warp, while those of the more distant stars (parallax <1 mas) are not. Conclusions. The kinematics of our sample of young OB stars suggests that systematic vertical motions in the disk cannot be explained by a simple model of a stable long-lived warp. The warp of the Milky Way may either be a transient feature, or additional phenomena are acting on the gaseous component of the Milky Way, causing systematic vertical motions that are masking the expected warp signal. A larger and deeper sample of stars with Gaia astrometry will be needed to constrain the dynamical nature of the Galactic warp.Peer reviewe

    The Na-O anticorrelation in horizontal branch stars. II. NGC1851

    We studied the Na-O anti-correlation from moderately high resolution spectra for 35 stars on the blue HB (BHB), one RR Lyrae, and 55 stars are on the red HB (RHB) of NGC1851. We also derived abundances for He and N in BHB stars, and Ba and upper limits for N in RHB stars. The RHB stars clearly separate into two groups: the vast majority are O-rich and Na-poor, while about 10-15% are Na-rich and moderately O-poor. Most Na-rich RHB stars are also Ba-rich and there is an overall correlation between Na and Ba abundances within the RHB. The group of Ba-rich RHB stars resides on the warmer edge and includes ~10% of the RHB stars. We propose that they are the descendant of the stars on the RGB sequence with very red v-y colour. This sequence is known also to consist of Ba and perhaps CNO-rich stars. However, the upper limit we obtain for N ([N/Fe]<1.55) for one of the Ba-rich stars coupled with the low C-abundances for RGB Ba-rich stars from the literature suggests that the total CNO might not be particularly high ([(C+N+O)/Fe]<=0.15). The other Na-rich RHB stars are also at the warm edge of the RHB and the only RR Lyrae is Na-rich and moderately O-poor. We also find a Na-O anticorrelation among BHB stars, partially overlapping that found among RHB stars, though generally BHB stars are more Na-rich and O-poor. However, there is no clear correlation between temperature and Na and O abundances within the BHB. The average He abundance in BHB stars is Y=0.29+/-0.05. N abundances are quite uniform at [N/Fe]=1.16+/-0.14 among BHB stars, with a small trend with temperature. This value is consistent with normal CNO abundance and excludes that BHB stars are very CNO-rich: this leaves an age spread of ~1.5 Gyr as the only viable explanation for the split of the SGB.     Discovery of a Non-Peptidic Inhibitor of West Nile Virus NS3 Protease by High-Throughput Docking

    An estimated 2.5 billion people are at risk of diseases caused by dengue and West Nile virus. As of today, there are neither vaccines to prevent nor drugs to cure the severe infections caused by these viruses. The NS3 protease is one of the most promising targets for drug development against West Nile virus because it is an essential enzyme for viral replication and because success has been demonstrated with the closely related hepatitis C virus protease. We have discovered a small molecule that inhibits the NS3 protease of West Nile virus by computer-aided high-throughput docking, and validated it using three experimental techniques. The inhibitor has potential to be developed to a drug candidate to combat West Nile virus infections

    The Return of the Mid-infrared to the VLT: News from the VISIR Upgrade

    The VLT mid-infrared imager and spectrometer VISIR returns to science operations following an extended upgrade period. Among the most important modifications are: the imaging and spectroscopic detectors have been replaced with larger AQUARIUS (1024 by 1024 pixel) detector arrays; the N-band low-resolution grating has been exchanged; and support is now provided for precipitable water vapour monitoring, in order to select the best observing conditions. The AQUARIUS detectors stem from a development for very low background applications which result in excess noise under ground-based conditions. A series of interventions was needed to find a scheme that effectively exploits these detectors for ground-based use, involving the implementation of faster chopping. VISIR has been returned to service at the VLT with enhanced capabilities
