A Study on the Incidence and Comorbidities of Autism Spectrum Disorders Accompanied by Intellectual Disabilities in Yonago City, Japan
[Background] Autism spectrum disorders (ASD) with intellectual disabilities may be associated with many factors. This study focused on patients with ASD with intellectual disabilities, defined by a threshold intelligence quotient (IQ) or development quotient (DQ) of 70. We also discuss comorbidities and other factors related to ASD. [Methods] We extracted case records of patients born between April 1995 and March 2001 who lived in Yonago City, as of January 2011, and had visited the two specialist institutions for consultation regarding developmental issues. The list was further narrowed down to patients identified, as having ASD by pediatric neurologists based on Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (Fifth Edition) (DSM-5). We selected patients with < IQ/DQ 70 using the most recent intelligence/development test to determine comorbidities and other factors related to ASD. [Results] The data of 81 patients (59 males and 22 females) were extracted, corresponding to an incidence of 76.2 patients out of every 10,000 births. The male-to-female ratio was 2.7:1. Comorbidities and related factors of ASD were observed in 25 cases (30.9%). Eleven cases had perinatal abnormalities. Other abnormalities were observed in 17 cases, including epilepsies in 7, chromosomal abnormalities in 4, familial mental retardation in 1, and acquired brain injury in 1. [Conclusion] It is important to treat and support individuals with ASD and intellectual disabilities taking into account the characteristics and prognosis of the comorbidities and related factors.journal articl
Case Report on the Characteristics of the Cognitive Function of Expert Equestrians
This study aims to examine whether the cognitive function of a proficient equestrian is superior to that of a male of the same age group. A 66-year-old male who has been an equestrian for 53 years since the age of 13 (hereinafter referred to as Male Y) participated in the research in which he was compared with a control group of twenty males in their 60s. Choice Reaction Time tests using the rules of rock-paper-scissors were used to assess their cognitive function. The instrument measured the time it took for participants to choose and press the appropriate button for the pictures displayed on the screen according to each condition of win, lose, and tie. The shorter the time it took for them to press the button, the better their cognitive function was. Five tests were conducted on each participant under each condition. As a result, compared to the mean value scored by the average male in their 60s, the performance of Male Y recorded shorter times under all three conditions. In equitation, an equestrian rides on a horse and aims to achieve the accuracy, dynamics, and beauty of movements. In order to deliver a complete performance together with a horse as one, equestrians are required to have cognitive, judgmental and executive abilities to recognize the condition of their horses and the course and act accordingly rather than physical strength. Release and establishment of Bathyplectes anurus (Hymenoptera: Ichneumonidae), an introduced natural enemy of the alfalfa weevil, Hypera postica (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) in Miyazaki, Japan
Alfalfa weevil, Hypera postica, a serious pest of Chinese milk vetch, Astragalus sinicus, in paddy fields, was accidentally established in Miyazaki prefecture in 1986 to 1987. Since 1998, alfalfa weevil has been the target of biological control efforts in this prefecture. Although cocoons of the effective natural enemy, Bathyplecles anurus, were released several times from 1999 to 2006, the parasitoid failed to colonize because of some unfavorable condition. In 2007, a total of 16,000 B. anurus cocoons were released in three alfalfa fields, three communities of bush vetch, Vicia angustifolia, and two Chines milk vetch fields. In spring 2008, considerable numbers of B. anurus cocoons were recorded in Aya Town and Kobayashi City, suggesting successful establishment of the parasitoid in Miyazaki in 2007. We discuss some issues around synchronization of life cycles of H. postica and B. anurus, and the evaluation of percentage para iti m of B. anurus.アルファルファタコゾウムシは蜜源植物であるレンゲを食害する侵入害虫で, わが国では1982年, 福岡県と沖縄県で最初に発見された. 宮崎県では1986-1987年頃その被害が顕在化し, 以後, 甚大な被害を与え続けている. 本害虫の密度を抑える目的で同県では1998年~2006年, 数回に亘って導入天敵ヨーロッパトビチビアメバチが放飼された. しかし, その定着の有無は未確認の状態が続いている. 2007年2- 3月, 筆者らは放飼場所を再検討し, 16,000頭の同天敵をアルファルファ圃場やカラスノエンドウ群落等8筒所に放飼した. 2008年春の調査において, すべての放飼地点で放飼世代の孫世代の発生を確認した. とくに綾町と小林市における孫世代の寄生率 (95%信頼区間) は それぞれ7.4~17.6%と3.7~10.9%で, 両地方におけるヨーロッパトビチビアメバチの定着が強く示唆された. また, 筆者らはヨーロッパトビチビアメバチのアルファルファタコゾウムシに対する寄生率を評価する際, 両種の生活環における同調性の問題が無視できないことを指摘した.departmental bulletin pape
