Observation of a red-blue detuning asymmetry in matter-wave superradiance
We report the first experimental observations of strong suppression of
matter-wave superradiance using blue-detuned pump light and demonstrate a
pump-laser detuning asymmetry in the collective atomic recoil motion. In
contrast to all previous theoretical frameworks, which predict that the process
should be symmetric with respect to the sign of the pump-laser detuning, we
find that for condensates the symmetry is broken. With high condensate
densities and red-detuned light, the familiar distinctive multi-order,
matter-wave scattering pattern is clearly visible, whereas with blue-detuned
light superradiance is strongly suppressed. In the limit of a dilute atomic
gas, however, symmetry is restored.Comment: Accepted by Phys. Rev. Let

The development of the reflective practitioner through digital storytelling
This paper presents a multiple case study on the use of digital storytelling to support the development of reflection and digital skills in professional education. Students from two universities, one group studying health and social care, the other training to be teachers, were asked to produce two artefacts, at the beginning and end of their respective modules, in which they reflected on the aspects of professional and personal learning. The artefacts, some of which were produced in groups, others by individual students, were analysed for recurring themes, levels of reflection and digital competence, particularly in the use of open educational resources. Findings from the analysis support the use of digital storytelling methods to develop a range of key skills pertinent to professional education in general but concluded that the deeper levels of reflection may be most evident in individual artefacts produced in the later stages of professional education. The study provides some important insights for teaching and learning in professional education as it suggests that digital storytelling provides a highly engaging way of introducing both reflective and open educational practices

Singularities of equidistants and global centre symmetry sets of Lagrangian submanifolds
We define the Global Centre Symmetry set (GCS) of a smooth closed
m-dimensional submanifold M of R^n, , which is an affinely invariant
generalization of the centre of a k-sphere in R^{k+1}. The GCS includes both
the centre symmetry set defined by Janeczko and the Wigner caustic defined by
Berry. We develop a new method for studying generic singularities of the GCS
which is suited to the case when M is lagrangian in R^{2m} with canonical
symplectic form. The definition of the GCS, which slightly generalizes one by
Giblin and Zakalyukin, is based on the notion of affine equidistants, so, we
first study singularities of affine equidistants of Lagrangian submanifolds,
classifying all the stable ones. Then, we classify the affine-Lagrangian stable
singularities of the GCS of Lagrangian submanifolds and show that, already for
smooth closed convex curves in R^2, many singularities of the GCS which are
affine stable are not affine-Lagrangian stable.Comment: 26 pages, 2 figure
Self-medication profile of dental patients in Ondo state, Nigeria
The practice of selfmedication has been extensively researched but there is dearth of information about its modality among dentalpatients in developing countries. Hence, this study was designed to determine the proportion of dental patients who practice, medications employed and the reasons for resorting to self medication in general dental populations in Ondo State, Nigeria and tomake appropriate recommendations. This study was conducted between June 2007 and June 2008 at the Federal Medical Centre, Owo and State Specialist Hospital, Akure, Ondo State, Nigeria. Five hundred and thirty six consenting respondents were selected by multistage sampling technique and interviewed with the aid of semi structured questionnaire.Results: Almost half of the respondents (42% or n=225) admitted to self medication while the majority (58%) did not practice it. Drugs utilized are usually singly (56.4%) rather than in combination(43.6%), commonly analgesics (50.1%) and antibiotics (30.4%), with themajority (45.8%) using the medications for at least one week. The reasons cited by respondents for self medication were theirperception that they know what to do and it saves time andmoney. A sizable majority of the respondents admitted to self-medication usually with analgesics. Adequate health education of the populace on the use and misuse of analgesics needs to be mounted, while dental services should be made readily available and affordable so that self medication among dental patients can be reduced to the barest minimum.Keywords: self-medication, profile, dental patients, OndoState, Nigeri
Conformal mechanics inspired by extremal black holes in d=4
A canonical transformation which relates the model of a massive relativistic
particle moving near the horizon of an extremal black hole in four dimensions
and the conventional conformal mechanics is constructed in two different ways.
The first approach makes use of the action-angle variables in the angular
sector. The second scheme relies upon integrability of the system in the sense

Analyticity and criticality results for the eigenvalues of the biharmonic operator
We consider the eigenvalues of the biharmonic operator subject to several
homogeneous boundary conditions (Dirichlet, Neumann, Navier, Steklov). We show
that simple eigenvalues and elementary symmetric functions of multiple
eigenvalues are real analytic, and provide Hadamard-type formulas for the
corresponding shape derivatives. After recalling the known results in shape
optimization, we prove that balls are always critical domains under volume

Covariant Lyapunov vectors of a quasi-geostrophic baroclinic model: analysis of instabilities and feedbacks
The classical approach for studying atmospheric variability is based on defining a background state and studying the linear stability of the small fluctuations around such a state. Weakly non-linear theories can be constructed using higher order expansions terms. While these methods have undoubtedly great value for elucidating the relevant physical processes, they are unable to follow the dynamics of a turbulent atmosphere. We provide a first example of extension of the classical stability analysis to a non-linearly evolving quasi-geostrophic flow. The so-called covariant Lyapunov vectors (CLVs) provide a covariant basis describing the directions of exponential expansion and decay of perturbations to the non-linear trajectory of the flow. We use such a formalism to re-examine the basic barotropic and baroclinic processes of the atmosphere with a quasi-geostrophic beta-plane two-layer model in a periodic channel driven by a forced meridional temperature gradient ÎT. We explore three settings of ÎT, representative of relatively weak turbulence, well-developed turbulence, and intermediate conditions. We construct the Lorenz energy cycle for each CLV describing the energy exchanges with the background state. A positive baroclinic conversion rate is a necessary but not sufficient condition of instability. Barotropic instability is present only for few very unstable CLVs for large values of ÎT. Slowly growing and decaying hydrodynamic Lyapunov modes closely mirror the properties of the background flow. Following classical necessary conditions for barotropic/baroclinic instability, we find a clear relationship between the properties of the eddy fluxes of a CLV and its instability. CLVs with positive baroclinic conversion seem to form a set of modes for constructing a reduced model of the atmosphere dynamics
Probability representation and quantumness tests for qudits and two-mode light states
Using tomographic-probability representation of spin states, quantum behavior
of qudits is examined. For a general j-qudit state we propose an explicit
formula of quantumness witnetness whose negative average value is incompatible
with classical statistical model. Probability representations of quantum and
classical (2j+1)-level systems are compared within the framework of quantumness
tests. Trough employing Jordan-Schwinger map the method is extended to check
