Eroticism in and of the City: The Question of Approach

    Get PDF
Discussions of eroticism usually commence with references to Georges Bataille and his L’Erotisme, whose first English edition was published under the title Death and Sensuality: A Study of Eroticism and the Taboo (1962), thus encouraging analyses in terms of transgression. This article opens with a quotation from Zygmunt Bauman’s essay, “On Postmodern Uses of Sex,” which reflects on the instability of the concept and emphasizes its contextualization. This openly declared incongruity raises questions of applicability. What is meant by eroticism today, i.e. in and after postmodernism? The article seeks to explore the relevance of the term in studies of urban drama and tries to suggest a workable approach that would differentiate between the commonly observable erotic material found on display within the premises of the city and the eroticism of the city itself. In the latter case the erotic relationship involves the materiality of the urban context and its user. The essay, focusing on drama, assumes that plays are written for the stage-their proper mode of existence-and deems it necessary to include the city/theatre and city/drama interdependence as well as the nexus of concepts such as urban drama and its genre restrictions into the following analysis

The article refers to the latest methodological reflections on the remembrance culture and presents one of the forms of Swedish collective memory thematization. The 1990s brought an increased interest of the Swedish people in the history of their own country and debates on the stance taken by Sweden during World War II. Diaries, memoires, autobiographic and documentary novels about World War II and the Holocaust gained recognition among Swedish researchers and readers. Among the latest prose works, coming under this thematic heading, Krigsdagböcker 1939-1945 (War Diaries 1939-1945) by Astrid Lindgren, published posthumously in 2015, merit attention. When analyzing the image of World War II presented in the diaries, the following issues were taken into account: the image of everyday life of the Swedes during World War II, the state of knowledge of the situation in Europe and the attitude towards the Swedish neutrality

Śledzenie procesu w badaniach politologicznych. Warianty i potencjał zastosowania

Process-tracing is a method of within-case analysis, which can provide causal explanations of various social phenomena. Its focus on developing and testing causal theories attracts interest among qualitative researchers who do not want to limit their inquiries to exploratory or descriptive aims. At the same time, the case-centric variant of process-tracing, in which theories are used pragmatically as heuristic devices, provides a systematic but also creative way of researching singular events and processes. This paper attempts to show what process-tracing is and what it is not, what its variants are and how they should be used. It also probes the ontological and epistemological limits of the method, by showing how it can be used in idealist and interpretive research

Izazovi za hrvatski nacionalni identitet unutar EU-a: poljska perspektiva

The aim of this paper is to share the experience of a post-socialist country and a member of the EU since 1 May 2004 and the problem of preserving its own national identity, while also trying to promote it. The author first examines the definition of the concept and the relevance of the Nation’s Brand Identity Model with respect to Croatia. Next, he addresses the issue of how to preserve national identity facing “the winds” of unequal competition from more developed EU member countries as well as other global players – mainly United States. (perhaps even more dangerous). The issue of media ownership plays an extremely important role. Based on the evidence from the Polish experience, the author developed a new concept of “the reed effect.” In the final section of the article, he recommends public diplomacy as the potentially most efficient tool for building relations and promoting national identity. Finally, he concludes the study with a rather optimistic observation that external threats tend to strengthen national identity, yet the process is time-consuming. In the case of Poland, the appeals for “economic patriotism”, defending the purity of the Polish language, slogans like “buy Polish” and “proud to be Polish” did not emerge until 6-8 years after accession to the European Union and about 18-20 years after the beginning of the country’s economic and political transformation. This phenomenon can be observed after the first waves of enthusiasm for the “western/individualistic” value system, consumer goods, junk food, films, foreign direct investment and media “freedom”.Cilj je ovoga rada podijeliti iskustvo Poljske, postsocijalističke zemlje, članice Europske unije od 1. travnja 2004., koja se s jedne strane suočava s problemom očuvanja vlastitog nacionalnog identiteta, a s druge strane istovremeno ga pokušava promovirati.

Caryl Churchill’s Artificial and Orificial Bodies: Between Subjective and Non-Subjective Nobody’s Emotion or Affect

    Get PDF
This article analyzes the shift from emotion to affect in Caryl Churchill’s writing for the theatre, a process which becomes prominent in the later seventies and culminates in the production of A Mouthful of Birds, a project designed jointly with the choreographer David Lan. The effects of the transformation remain traceable in The Skriker, a complex play taking several years to complete. It is argued that there is a tangible and logical correlation between Churchill’s dismantling of the representational apparatus associated with the tradition of institutional theatre—a process which involves, primarily, a dissolution of its artificially constructed, docile bodies into orificial ones—and her withdrawal from the use of emotional expression in favour of the affective. In the following examination, emotions are conceived as interpretative acts modelled on cognition and mediated through representations while the intensity of affect remains unstructured. Often revealed through violence, pain and suffering, affect enables the theatre to venture into the pre-cognitive and thus beyond the tradition of liberal subject formation
