Enough is as good as a feast : a simple model of choice overload
The fundamental assumption of neoclassical economic theory is the rationality of economic agents. Nonetheless, in time, systematic deviations from this assumption has been observed. A number of such deviations pertains to the decision-making process and one of them is the rather seemingly contradictory burden originating from the abounding number of alternatives available. Suboptimal behavior caused by this burden that is called "choice overload" has been observed in field and laboratory experiments and subsequently introduced into some modern economic models. This dissertation provides a simple model for choice overload. By breaking the phenomenon into three parts, the novelty factor, the cost of evaluation of choices, and the anticipated regret, it examines the elements that constitute choice overload. Subsequently, this work provides an example of the role choice overload may play in the context of Prisoner's Dilemma.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
Exploring Linking Social Capital in Economic Development
Linking social capital is a concept suitable for the study of the nature, extent and economic impact of social interactions with politicians or officials. By reviewing the development of the concept and its application in economic development, this paper aims to gain insight into the usefulness of the concept of linking social capital in economic development studies where political system is internalized. The appropriateness of the concept is reviewed through an in-depth analysis of main theoretical contributions and papers selected from Thomson Reuters’ Web of Science Core Collection. Studies that conceptualize linking social capital as shaped by political institutions are rare. Lack of consensus on the definition and measurement of linking social capital limited its usefulness. The paper concludes with a call for clarity in the definition of the concept à la Bourdieu and for further studies that explore the economic impact of social capital under different political environments
Turkey: Trade policy review, 2007
The purpose of this paper is to discuss the main issues highlighted in the Trade Policy Review: Turkey 2007. The paper studies first the main developments in Turkey's trade regime and trade performance. Next it discusses Turkish trade policy under the headings of measures affecting imports, exports and foreign direct investment. The paper notes that the formation of the 1995 EU-Turkey customs union has contributed to a significant increase in the contestability of domestic markets through infusing predictability, transparency and stability to trade policy as well as by liberalising market access. But free trade in industrial goods between Turkey and the EU could still not be established mainly because of non-tariff barriers and in particular because of the various problems faced in the elimination of technical barriers to trade (TBT). The final section of the paper discusses first the role of standards and conformity assessment in general terms and thereafter evaluates critically the Turkish approach to elimination of TBTs. © 2009 Blackwell Publishing Ltd

The importance of linking social capital in unequal and fragmented societies: an analysis of perceived economic well-being in Turkish rural and urban households
Most research on social networks and economic well-being concentrates on bonding and bridging social capital, while the importance of linking social capital is retrograded. However, linking social capital in the form of ties between the ordinary people and people representing the institutionalized networks of power and authority plays an important role in offering the poor, the access to critical resources. There is a gap in the literature on equal access to networks of power and authority, especially in fragmented and unequal societies. This article attempts to fill the gap in the literature by undertaking the case of Turkey. Specifically, besides demographic factors, we investigate the importance of different forms of social capital, in explaining changes in perceived economic well-being levels in Turkey after 2010. The results should help policy makers in designing redistributive policies in a fragmented society. We used microdata to determine the importance of demographic factors and different forms of social capital in explaining changes in perceived economic well-being levels in Turkey after 2010. The results show that linking social capital, which we have captured through the political ties of the respondents, is the most important factor. The results suggest that social capital accumulation should be taken into account in redistributive policies. Furthermore, linking social capital might have undesired effects if there is unequal opportunity for different groups. Therefore, it is important to support a balanced and equitable distribution of social capital to attain a long-lasting and egalitarian improvement in economic welfare. © 2020, Springer-Verlag GmbH Germany, part of Springer Nature
