Contains fulltext : 165611.pdf (publisher's version ) (Open Access)The article discusses agency of second generation veiled Turkish-Dutch Muslim students by looking at the issue of handshake. Utilising the Bourdesian conceptual tool of habitus and its accompanying concepts, we present the ways in which handshaking works for our respondents. Subsequently, we show how both not-handshaking and handshaking can lead to strategic gains. While not-handshaking becomes a positive and valued feature of their cultural capital in interactions with pious Muslim men, following the handshaking norm in Dutch social interaction is widely practiced to gain benefits. Given how they act in adaptive ways, we show how women's agency can be defined and accounted for in two ways; both through the paradigm of 'doing religion' (Avishai, 2008), as well as through the paradigm of agency as defined by liberal feminism.24 p

The different characteristics of B2B and B2C markets affect the traditional marketing communication mix as well as the social media content strategy. However, it is seen that while some B2B companies have adopted well to social media, the others tend to imitate B2C companies in social media existence. This study aims to figure out which MARCOM tools are intensified in social media and if it works or not. For this purpose, every single social media post of 40 Turkish B2B SMEs have been classified into MARCOM tools and then the interaction performance of each post have been measured via engagement rate formula. Thus, evidence gathered to figure out what kind of content serves best in which social media platform for engagement and interaction. This study is believed to be a general guideline for selecting the right MARCOM mix in social media for B2B companies –at least- for B2B SMEs in Turkey.B2B ve B2C pazarlar arasındaki farklar, geleneksel pazarlama karmasını etkilediği gibi sosyal medya içerik stratejisini de etkiler.

Objective: Impairment of continuity of the sleep due to arousals and stage changes commonly experienced by the patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) cause sleep problems associated with insomnia or hypersomnia. These resultant sleep problems lead to impaired quality of life in the patients with COPD. The aim of this study was to evaluate complaints related to sleep-alertness in the patients with COPD in the setting in which subjective sleep tests and polysomnography investigation using scales of quality of life are unavailable. Materials and Methods: The present study included 70 patients with COPD (33 were men and 37 were women). First, the patients with symptoms of COPD were evaluated clinically and COPD was staged based on degree of restriction of airflow (GOLD 2011). Sleep-alertness situation of all patients was evaluated using Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS) and Pittsburgh Scale of Seep Quality (PSSQ). Results: No statistically significant relationship was observed between stage of COPD and results of subjective sleep tests. Conclusion: Although these results indicate that stage of disease does not impact sleepiness and quality of sleep in the patients with COPD, they support the fact that presence of COPD alone negatively affected quality of sleep

The Relationship of Stroke and Sleep-A Review

    Get PDF
Ischemic stroke appears the third leading cause of mortality and the first cause of disability in developing countries. The relationship between sleep disorders and cerebrovascular risk factors is well defined and there are different mechanisms in pathophysiology. Ischemic stroke affects many pathways, such as hypoxia, increased wakefulness reactions, decreased sleep quality, increased free oxygen radicals, inflammatory mechanisms activation, endothelial dysfunction, atherosclerosis, hypertension, and insulin resistance. Sleep disturbances contribute to stroke pathology through multiple direct or indirect mechanisms. Due to the fact that sleep disorders are among the changeable cerebrovascular risk factors, it is very important to raise awareness about the diagnosis, management and prevention of sleep disorders

Association of myasthenia gravis and Behçet's disease: A case report

Myasthenia gravis is a disease of neuromuscular junction due to auto-immune destruction of the acetylcholine receptors. Behçet's disease, on the other hand, is a multisystemic vascular-inflammatory disease. Both conditions are not common in the general population although their association has not been reported in the literature. We wanted to present our patient who developed clinical course of myasthenia gravis following discontinuation of medications due to complications of corticosteroid for Behçet's disease. It was observed that clinical findings of myasthenia gravis recovered following restarting steroid treatment and he did not experience attacks of both conditions. Although Myasthenia gravis and Behçet's disease are distinct entities clinically as well as in terms of pathogenesis, they share common physiopathological features and their treatment is based on their common features

Background: After the first case of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) was reported in China in December 2019, it caused a global pandemic, including Turkey. Objectives: The aim of this study was to analyse the characteristics of hospitalised COVID-19 patients and assess the parameters related to severe pneumonia. Methods: Included in the study were hospitalised COVID-19 patients with positive naso-oropharyngeal swabs. Patients’ demographics, admission symptoms, laboratory and radiological findings were recorded retrospectively. Results: Of 1013 patients, 583 were males (57.6%) and 430 were females (42.4%), with a mean age of 53.7 ± 17.9. More than half of the patients had at least one comorbidities, the most common of which were hypertension and diabetes mellitus. Cough (59.8%), fatigue (49.5%) and fever (41.2%) were the most common presenting symptoms. Of the hospitalised COVID-19 patients, 84.9% had pneumonia and 83.5% had typical radiological COVID-19 appearances (94.5%: ground-glass areas). The most common laboratory findings were high C-reactive protein (CRP) (73.6%) and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) (46.2%) levels, as well as lymphopenia (30.1%). Severe pneumonia was present in 28.1% of COVID-19 patients. Multivariate logistic regression analysis indicated that advanced age, hypotension, anaemia and elevated CRP and LDH serum levels were independent risk factors for the severity of COVID-19 pneumonia (P = .011, .006, .017, .003 and .001, respectively). Conclusion: This study, as one of the first multicentre studies about characteristics of COVID-19 in Turkey, may guide about disease-related parameters and severity of pneumonia. Age, blood pressure, complete blood count and routine biochemical tests (including CRP and LDH) would appear to be important parameters for the evaluation of the severity of COVID-19 pneumonia

Enabling Large-Scale Carbon Capture, Utilisation, and Storage (CCUS) Using Offshore Carbon Dioxide (CO2) Infrastructure Developments - A Review

    Get PDF
Presently, the only offshore project for enhanced oil recovery using carbon dioxide, known as CO2-EOR, is in Brazil. Several desk studies have been undertaken, without any projects being implemented. The objective of this review is to investigate barriers to the implementation of large-scale offshore CO2-EOR projects, to identify recent technology developments, and to suggest non-technological incentives that may enable implementation. We examine differences between onshore and offshore CO2-EOR, emerging technologies that could enable projects, as well as approaches and regulatory requirements that may help overcome barriers. Our review shows that there are few, if any, technical barriers to offshore CO2-EOR. However, there are many other barriers to the implementation of offshore CO2-EOR, including: High investment and operation costs, uncertainties about reservoir performance, limited access of CO2 supply, lack of business models, and uncertainties about regulations. This review describes recent technology developments that may remove such barriers and concludes with recommendations for overcoming non-technical barriers. The review is based on a report by the Carbon Sequestration Leadership Forum (CSLF).publishedVersio
