Lending Cycles and Real Outcomes: Costs of Political Misalignment. LEQS Paper No. 139/2018 December 2018

We document a strong political cycle in bank credit and industry outcomes in Turkey. In line with theories of tactical redistribution, state-owned banks systematically adjust their lending around local elections compared with private banks in the same province based on electoral competition and political alignment of incumbent mayors. This effect only exists in corporate lending as opposed to consumer loans. It creates credit constraints for firms in opposition areas, which suffer drops in employment and sales but not firm entry. There is substantial misallocation of financial resources as provinces and industries with high initial efficiency suffer the greatest constraints

Investigating dynamics of machine tool spindles under operational conditions

Chatter is one of the major problems in machining and can be avoided by stability diagrams which are generated using frequency response functions (FRF) at the tool tip. During cutting operations, discrepancies between the stability diagrams obtained by using FRFs measured at the idle state and the actual stability of the process are frequently observed. These deviations can be attributed to the changes of machine dynamics under cutting conditions. In this paper, the effects of the cutting process on the spindle dynamics are investigated both experimentally and analytically. The variations in the spindle dynamics are attributed to the changes in the bearing parameters. FRFs under cutting conditions are obtained through the input-output relations of the cutting forces and the vibration response which are measured simultaneously. Experimentally and analytically obtained FRFs are then used in the identification of the bearing parameters under cutting conditions. Thus, bearing properties obtained at idle and cutting conditions are compared and variations in their values are obtained

KIC 7385478: An eclipsing binary with a {\gamma} Doradus component

We present spectroscopic and photometric analysis of the eclipsing binary KIC\,7385478. We find that the system is formed by F1V + K4III-IV components. Combining results from analysis of spectroscopic data and $Kepler$ photometry, we calculate masses and radii of the primary and the secondary components as M$_{1}$ = 1.71 $\pm$ 0.08 \Msun, M$_{2}$ = 0.37 $\pm$ 0.04 \Msun~ and R$_{1}$ = 1.59 $\pm$ 0.03\Rsun, R$_{2}$ = 1.90 $\pm$ 0.03\Rsun, respectively. Position of the primary component in HR diagram is in the region of $\gamma$ Doradus type pulsators and residuals from light curve modeling exhibit additional light variation with a dominant period of $\sim$0.5 day. These are clear evidences of the $\gamma$ Doradus type pulsations on the primary component. We also observe occasional increase in amplitude of the residuals, where the orbital period becomes the most dominant period. These may be attributed to the cool star activity originating from the secondary component.Comment: 14 pages, 8 figures, 5 table

Frazzled promotes growth cone attachment at the source of a Netrin gradient in the Drosophila visual system.

Axon guidance is proposed to act through a combination of long- and short-range attractive and repulsive cues. The ligand-receptor pair, Netrin (Net) and Frazzled (Fra) (DCC, Deleted in Colorectal Cancer, in vertebrates), is recognized as the prototypical effector of chemoattraction, with roles in both long- and short-range guidance. In the Drosophila visual system, R8 photoreceptor growth cones were shown to require Net-Fra to reach their target, the peak of a Net gradient. Using live imaging, we show, however, that R8 growth cones reach and recognize their target without Net, Fra, or Trim9, a conserved binding partner of Fra, but do not remain attached to it. Thus, despite the graded ligand distribution along the guidance path, Net-Fra is not used for chemoattraction. Based on findings in other systems, we propose that adhesion to substrate-bound Net underlies both long- and short-range Net-Fra-dependent guidance in vivo, thereby eroding the distinction between them

Non-infectious pulmonary complications of hematopoietic stem cell transplantation

Noninfectious pulmonary complications of hematopoietic stem cell transplant are currently more prevalent than infectious complications. Unfortunately, the pathophysiology basis is not completely understood. However, there is a string association with graft-versus-host disease for many of them. Therefore, an important component of their pathophysiology is likely an allo-immune response. There is much research that needs to be conducted to improve the less than optimal outcomes for these disorders

Representations Of the ‘Self’ and the ‘Other’ In Travel Narratives: Daniel Defoe’s Robinson Crusoe and A.W. Kinglake’s Eothen

As travel and travel accounts are as old as history of mankind. With the beginnings of first examples of literary writings, it is hard to separate travelling and writing within each other. Looking at the 18th century travel literature and its tendencies, this paper explores the argument that the narrative of travel allows the writer to imagine and disseminate images of the self. Defoe and Kinglake, through the discourse of the travel narrative, portray idealised images of the “self” in the construction of the central character and that this is based on social ideals of the time. This paper also shows briefly the idea in both works that is important to the representation of “self” is the representation of the home culture. The main question for this essay could be, to what extent that the narrative of travel allows the writer to imagine and disseminate images of the Self
