A generalization of the Minkowski distance and a new definition of the ellipse

In this paper, we generalize the Minkowski distance by defining a new distance function in n-dimensional space, and we show that this function determines also a metric family as the Minkowski distance. Then, we consider three special cases of this family, which generalize the taxicab, Euclidean and maximum metrics respectively, and finally we determine circles of them with their some properties in the real plane. While we determine some properties of circles of the generalized Minkowski distance, we also discover a new definition for the ellipse.Comment: 18 pages, 18 figure

    Mostar index of bridge graphs

    Get PDF
Topological indices are the numerical descriptors of a molecular structure obtained via molecular graph G. Topological indices are used in the structure-property relationship, structure-activity relations, and nanotechnology. Also, they hold us to predict certain physicochemical properties such as boiling point, enthalpy of vaporization, stability, and so on. In this study, it is considered the Mostar index. It is present upper bound for Mostar index of bridge graphs. Moreover, it is given exact expressions for the Mostar index of bridge graphs of the path, star, cycle, and complete graphs.Publisher's Versio

STUDENTS’ PERCEPTIONS TOWARDS THE USE OF FIRST LANGUAGE IN THE FOREIGN LANGUAGE CLASSROOM

    Get PDF
International and domestic research makes it evident that there is an ongoing debate on the use of the first language in language teaching and it is one of the most problematic issues in foreign language classrooms. Most of the studies have been done on teachers’ attitudes and the reasons behind teachers’ L1 use. Yet there has been little research which has focused on students’ perceptions about the use of L1. The aim of this study is to reveal students’ perceptions towards the use of L1. The sample of this research consisted of ten students receiving English preparatory education at Gebze Technical University, in Turkey. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with ten students at the beginning of the term. The interview was repeated again to reveal the students’ views about whether the use of the first language is welcomed or avoided and if it is welcomed, when to use and what extent to use of L1 is helpful at the end of the term. It was found out that a great majority of the preparatory students had negative perceptions of the use of the first language, Turkish in foreign language learning and highlighted minimum use of L1. Although in their previous foreign education, they used L1 a lot, they claimed that it did not benefit. They asserted that they can learn the foreign language more quickly and easily, the more they are exposed to the foreign language, in which case they begin to internalize L2. They supported this view that they do not have any chance to be exposed to the foreign language outside the classroom. Comparing their pre and post-interview, it was concluded that students’ in the foreign languages department at Gebze Technical University are in favour of using the foreign language in foreign language classrooms.  Article visualizations

Changes in fungal concentrations depend on seasonal and environmental conditions. The aim of this study was to determine the seasonal distributions of the fungal flora in Dr. Siyami Ersek Chest, Heart and Vascular Center Education and Research Hospital (SEH) and Kartal Yavuz Selim State Hospital (KYSH) in İstanbul. Samples were collected seasonally from different stations (microbiology laboratory, toilet, patient waiting saloons, hospital garden and library) in these hospitals. Distributional patterns of the isolated micro fungi were evaluated for each season. In SEH, the highest number of the fungi was isolated in summer, followed by autumn, spring and winter, respectively. Among the 257 micro fungi isolated from this hospital, the most common species were Alternaria alternata (25.8%), Cladosporium cladosporioides (21.9%), Penicillium glabrum (12.9%), Penicillium brevicompactum (7.4%) and Cladosporium herbarum (3.9%). In KYSH, the highest number of fungi was isolated in summer followed by autumn, spring and winter, respectively. Among the 221 micro fungi isolated from this hospital, the most common species were Cladosporium cladosporioides (19.5%), Alternaria alternata (15.8%), Cladosporium herbarum (11.3%) and Penicillium brevicompactum (9.0%).Keywords: Istanbul, airborne fungi, hospital flora, seasonal flor

This study focused on reviewing sportive recreation activities of workers who worked in Ankara GİMAT automobile industrial zone. 235 workers who worked in Ankara GİMAT automobile industrial zone participated in the study that was designed in screening model. As data collection tool, Leisure Constraint Scale –which was developed by Alexandris and Carrol and Turkish adaptation of which was done by Gürbüz and Karaküçük– was used. According to study results, it was identified that workers considered social environment and lack of knowledge as the biggest constraint to leisure activity participation and that subdimension was followed by facilities/services and time subdimensions. Besides, according to analysis results about workers’ attitudes towards these six factors that constrained them from recreational activity participation, a significant difference existed in facilities/services and social environment and lack of knowledge subdimensions in terms of different age groups.  Article visualizations

For more than 20 years, Information Technologies, especially personal computer and Internet have been employed in all phases of our lives, especially in education. In today's globalizing world, borders among countries have been dissolved as qualified workforce would easily travel from one country to another. These developments required higher education institutions to provide education by using the latest techniques and technologies and educate highly qualified individuals with worldwide accredited diplomas and certificates at an increasing pace. In order to have such graduates, first instructors and academicians at higher institutions should use new Information and Communication Technologies effectively and efficiently and to do that, we need to know why these faculty members would use or prefer not to use such technologies as a personal choice. In this study, Davis' (1989) Technology Acceptance Model (TAM), which has strong socio-psychological theoretical foundations, has been empirically tested with the help of data collected at one of the newly established universities in Turkey. The study is among the first that tests the TAM, and the results generally support the theory empirically

This study investigates effects of the climate changes on tourism industry which causes environmental problems during the last several decades. The research aims to specify the precautions to reduce or prevent the problem of these effects while also exhibiting the effects of the climate change on the tourism industry. As a result of global warming, the climate change may have several outcomes such as reductions in glaciers and snow cover, the rise in the sea level, storm and hurricanes which causes consequently natural disasters ending up essential changes in the life of the all inhabitants of the earth. It is irresistible that the mass tourism and other specific tourism types such as winter, sailing, golf tourisms which are determined by the climate conditions may not be affected by these climate changes. All countries must take economic, sociologic and ecologic precautions against the outcomes of the climate changes. Moreover, educational programs must be considered so as to inform the public about these issues. The less CO2  releasing and energy consuming equipments must be produced to be used in the Tourism Industry and immediate and remedial precautions must be taken into consideration especially for the transportation sector and the energy needs of the tourism facilities. Besides, the tourism industry should pay more attention to the waste recycling issue and the local authorities must fulfill their responsibilities. The adequate educations and precautions must be provided to the administrations and personnel in the Tourism Industry. The government inspections in the Tourist facilities should be performed properly and the incentives must be promoted to the successful tourism businesses
