This research aims to show the potential of assessment in teaching-learning
processes within teaching programming and planning to achieve an autonomous, critical
and responsible student body, following the recommendations of the European
Parliament about the implementation of the key competencies in these processes. For this,
concerning the key competencies, special attention will be paid to the one of Sense of
Initiative and Entrepreneurship and to the one of Learning to Learn, since these two are
the ones that promote the autonomy of students the most. Regarding assessment, special
attention will be paid to self-assessment, as well as other types of assessments such as
peer-assessment, while defining techniques and instruments that can be used in
programming for teaching. Thanks to these theoretical notes, a series of activities are
presented in this investigation. These activities foster the achievement of the
characteristics mentioned above concerning the students while making use of the different
assessment strategies described and the different types of assessment techniques and
instruments. All of this, contextualized within the current Canarian educational model
and, adapting the teaching processes to the virtual teaching work
An Experimental Study on Pitch Compensation in Pedestrian-Protection Systems for Collision Avoidance and Mitigation
This paper describes an improved stereovision system for the anticipated detection of car-to-pedestrian accidents. An improvement of the previous versions of the pedestrian-detection system is achieved by compensation of the camera's pitch angle, since it results in higher accuracy in the location of the ground plane and more accurate depth measurements. The system has been mounted on two different prototype cars, and several real collision-avoidance and collision-mitigation experiments have been carried out in private circuits using actors and dummies, which represents one of the main contributions of this paper. Collision avoidance is carried out by means of deceleration strategies whenever the accident is avoidable. Likewise, collision mitigation is accomplished by triggering an active hood system
Numerical simulations of the aerodynamic response of 2D circular segments by means of URANS
[Abstract:] In the wind engineering field, the so-called D-section (semi-circular cylinder) has attracted some attention from researchers, since it is a galloping prone geometry. In fact, a modest number of references where this type of cross-section has been studied in the wind tunnel can be found, such as Novak and Tanaka (1974) or Weaver and Veljkovic (2005). However, to the authors’ knowledge, references in the literature concerning the CFD-based simulation of the aerodynamic response of circular segments are particularly scarce. In this work a 2D Unsteady Reynolds-Averaged Navier–Stokes (URANS) approach has been adopted with the purpose of computing force coefficients and Strouhal numbers of static circular segments at the subcritical regime considering corner angles of 90, 80, 70, 60, 50 and 40. Since the motivation of this work is to study circular segments as a simplified bridge deck geometry, the reference flow direction is parallel to the rectilinear side. It has been found that this kind of cross-section is particularly challenging since it presents massive flow separation on the rectilinear side, as well as the inherent difficulties in modeling the aerodynamic response on curved surfaces at high Reynolds numbers. For certain geometrical configurations low-Reynolds-number and curvature corrections in the k − ω Shear-Stress Transport (SST) turbulence model had to be introduced, as well as considering transition from laminar to turbulent flow, in order to obtain results similar to the experimental data.
.- This study focuses on the specific organization of the attacking strategies in women's handball. In particular, we explore the specific weight of the two possible modalities of attack: positional and counterattack. To do so, during the 2008/2009 season, we have analyzed through a systematic observation methodology, direct and non-participant, the matches of a team that plays in the First Division of Women's Handball. To determine the rates of effectiveness, we have studied more than 2000 attacks and 900 throws on goal. Statistical analysis revealed that counterattack is more effective than positional play, and that it has a closer relationship with victory.
Human activity recognition applying computational intelligence techniques for fusing information related to WiFi positioning and body posture
IEEE International Conference on Fuzzy Systems (FUZZ-IEEE), IEEE WCCI 2010, 18/07/2010-23/07/2010, Barcelona, España.This work presents a general framework for people indoor activity recognition. Firstly, a Wireless Fidelity (WiFi) localization system implemented as a Fuzzy Rulebased Classifier (FRBC) is used to obtain an approximate position at the level of discrete zones (office, corridor, meeting room, etc). Secondly, a Fuzzy Finite State Machine (FFSM) is used for human body posture recognition (seated, standing upright or walking). Finally, another FFSM combines bothWiFi localization and posture recognition to obtain a robust, reliable, and easily understandable activity recognition system (working in the desk room, crossing the corridor, having a meeting, etc). Each user carries with a personal digital agenda (PDA) or smart-phone equipped with a WiFi interface for localization task and accelerometers for posture recognition. Our approach does not require adding new hardware to the experimental environment. It relies on the WiFi access points (APs) widely available in most public and private buildings. We include a practical experimentation where good results were achieved.
Drug assessment by a Pharmacy and Therapeutics committee: from drug selection criteria to use in clinical practice
Background: In Spain, hospital medicines are assessed and selected by local Pharmacy and Therapeutics committees (PTCs). Of all the drugs assessed, cancer drugs are particularly important because of their budgetary impact and the sometimes arguable added value with respect to existing alternatives. This study analyzed the PTC drug selection process and the main objective was to evaluate the degree of compliance of prescriptions for oncology drugs with their criteria for use.
Methods: This was a retrospective observational study (May 2007 to April 2010) of PTC-assessed drugs. The variables measured to describe the committee's activity were number of drugs assessed per year and number of drugs included in any of these settings: without restrictions, with criteria for use, and not included in formulary. These drugs were also analyzed by therapeutic group. To assess the degree of compliance of prescriptions, a score was calculated to determine whether prescriptions for bevacizumab, cetuximab, trastuzumab, and bortezomib were issued in accordance with PTC drug use criteria.
Results: The PTC received requests for inclusion of 40 drugs, of which 32 were included in the hospital formulary (80.0%). Criteria for use were established for 28 (87.5%) of the drugs included. In total, 293 patients were treated with the four cancer drugs in eight different therapeutic indications. The average prescription compliance scores were as follows: bevacizumab, 83% for metastatic colorectal cancer, 100% for metastatic breast cancer, and 82.3% for non-small-cell lung cancer; cetuximab, 62.0% for colorectal cancer and 50% for head and neck cancer; trastuzumab, 95.1% for early breast cancer and 82.4% for metastatic breast cancer; and bortezomib, 63.7% for multiple myeloma.
Conclusion: The degree of compliance with criteria for use of cancer drugs was reasonably high. PTC functions need to be changed so that they can carry out more innovative tasks, such as monitoring conditions for drug use
