    TEACHING POLITENESS NORMS IN ENGLISH CLASSES AT A TOURISM COLLEGE

    This research aims at answering problems: “How to teach politeness norms in English classes at a tourism college?” and “Will the students’ knowledge of politeness norms improve their English speaking skills and hospitality skills in relating to and serving tourists during their duties of internship in tourism industries?” This study is an experimental research based. It uses three techniques for collecting data: observation and field notes, questionnaire, and in-depth interviewing. The 1st stage of research was undertaken at Travel Department of Sahid Tourism Institute of Surakarta from March to September 2013. The 2nd stage was undertaken within tourism industries in Central Java and Yogyakarta Special Province from October 2013 to March 2014. In 1st stage, the research group is made up of 20 students forming an experimental group and another 20 forming a control group. A lecturer of English for Tourism joins both groups. In the second stage, the research subjects are made up of the 40 students, 10 senior staffs of tourism industries and 50 English speaking guests as research subject. The lecturer taught English for Tourism to both student groups with these materials: (1) meeting tourists at the airport/railway station; (2) providing information upon arrival on how to get to hotel; (3) giving directions; (4) giving information about art performances and entertainment; (5) beginning a tour and describing the itinerary; (6) describing points of interest on the tour route; (7) describing process in making art objects; (8) bargaining for souvenirs; (9) handling guest complaints and (10) providing information upon departure with the way to the airport/railway station. Unlike to the control group, the lecturer also teaches politeness norms to the experimental group by inserting them in the pre-teaching activity, while-teaching activity and post-teaching activity. The research findings show that: (1) teaching politeness norms is appropriate at introduction part of each topic; by giving conversational model and practice of polite and impolite expressions in the main activity and evaluating them at the end of teaching activities and (2) the students’ knowledge of politeness norms which come from well known noble Javanese nuanced culture namely unggah-ungguh improves their behavior towards guests during their duties of internship in tourism industries. The norms include: (a) sumanak ‘friendly’, (b) andhap asor ‘giving high respect and appropriate appreciation’, (c) sabar lan sareh ‘patient and with ease, calm’, (d) empan papan ‘matches with the setting and occasion’, (e) tepa slira ‘showing a feeling of sympathy or solidarity’ and (f) nuju prana ‘pleasing, satisfying’. The findings indicate strongly that the materials of politeness norms should be best inserted in teaching English for Specific Purposes, especially English for Tourism. Moreover, not only do the teaching of politeness norms develop the students’ polite English speaking skills, but also increase their hospitality skills.     Penetration of Dutch Colonial Power Against the Sultanate of Jambi, 1615-1904

    The arrival of the Dutch in Jambi gave the impression of almost coincidence because Jambi was not familiar and not a large sultanate in Sumatra compared to Aceh. Even Jambi as a relatively small and unimportant kingdom in the 19th century. However, during the colonial era, some penetrations made to the Sultanate of Jambi. This study examines several factors that caused resistance from the rulers and local people of Jambi against the Dutch colonial power. By using a historical method that emphasized on the secondary sources, this study identifies those factors to make penetration. It shows that economic factors in which the Dutch monopoly trading system is not acceptable to the rulers and local people. It is detrimental and contrary to freedom of trade. Meanwhile, colonial expansion is contrary to the ethical principles they profess. In addition, the failure of the Jambi sultanate had the weakness of their political institutions in facing Dutch colonial penetration. The weakness of their political institutions is influenced by the poor main foundation of the empire and the values of the royal tradition

    The Development Lectora Inspire Based Learning Media for High School Students in Learning History

    This research aimed to develop Lectora Inspire App for history learning in high schools. Purposely, the stages of the development in using the ADDIE model which include the steps of analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation. Interview and questionnaires were administered in order to collect data. The interview data were analyzed qualitatively while the questionnaires were analyzed quantitatively. There were 35 respondents from one of the high schools in Jambi who were grouped into three groups, namely 3 students for a small individual group, 10 students for a small group, and 22 students for a large group. The results of this development research revealed that Lectora Inspire App based on history learning was valid based on the assessment of material experts and media experts. Moreover, based on the results of small group trials, limited group trials, and large group trials,it showed that Lectora Inspire App were effective as history learning media. Recommendations are also discussed for future research and practices

    Teaching English for Specific Purposes through Task-Based Approach in A Hospitality College

    This research is intended to investigate the effectiveness of teaching English for Specific Purposes (ESP) through task-based approach in a hospitality college. This research is of a descriptive and qualitative study. It uses six stages: pre-task, task, planning, report, analysis, and practice (British Council, 2018) along with three techniques for collecting data: observation, questionnaire and in-depth interviewing. There were 34 students of Hotel Department at Sahid Tourism Institute of Surakarta and an English lecturer prepared as research subjects. The research findings show that: (1) students were very active in teaching and learning ESP through task-based approach; (2) students used their ESP in authentic situations that felt like the “real world”; and (3) at the end of the teaching and learning process, their knowledge of ESP improved. The findings indicate strongly that not only do the teaching English for Specific Purposes through task-based approach develop the students’ English speaking skills effectively, but also increase their hospitality knowledge

ABSTRAK Penelitian ini bertujuan mendeskripsikan dan menjelaskan (1) struktur novel, (2) bentuk kekerasan berbasis ketidakadilan gender (3) bentuk emansipasi (4) pendidikan karakter, (5) relevansi novel Bak Rambut Dibelah Tujuh sebagai bahan ajar Bahasa Indonesia. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode kualitatif. Metode kualitatif adalah prosedur penelitian yang menghasilkan data deskripsi berupa kata-kata. Data penelitian ini adalah novel Bak Rambut Dibelah Tujuh karya Muhammad Makhdlori. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan feminisme untuk mendeskripsikan bentuk emansipasi dan bentuk ketidakadilan gender. Teknik pengumpulan data yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah teknik noninteraktif. Teknik pengumpulan data noninteraktif dengan melakukan pembacaan secara intensif dari novel dan melakukan pencatatan secara aktif dengan metode content analysis. Validitas data menggunakan trianggulasi data dan teknik analisis menggunakan model noninteraktif. Simpulan dari hasil penelitian ini sebagai berikut: (1) struktur novel yang terdapat dalam novel Bak Rambut Dibelah Tujuh antara lain tema, tokoh dan penokohan, alur, setting, sudut pandang dan amanat, (2) bentuk kekerasan berbasis ketidakadilan gender ,meliputi : (a) marginalisasi, merupakan proses pemiskinan yang terjadi di masyarakat dalam bentuk eksploitasi (b) subordinasi, merupakan sebuah anggapan bahwa kaum perempuan ditempatkan pada posisi yang tidak penting (c) stereotipe, merupakan pelabelan atau penandaan terhadap suatu kelompok tertentu (d) kekerasan, merupakan suatu tindakan yang dapat mengakibatkan penderitaan bagi orang lain baik dalam bentuk fisik, seksual, atau psikologis. (3) bentuk emansipasi meliputi : (a) kebebasan memilih bagi perempuan dalam menentukan pendidikan , (b) ketegaran menghadapi permasalahan hidup (c) perjuangan dalam menuntutkeadilan hak-hak perempuan. (4) nilai pendidikan karakter meliputi : (a) religius, demokratis, peduli sosial, tanggung jawab, cinta tanah air, dan jujur.     There are various sources of indigenous knowledge. Novels can be considered as one source of indigenous knowledge. In this paper, several examples of indigenous knowledge which are extracted from Indonesian novels, will be described. Most of the indigenous knowledge being discussed in this paper represents environmental knowledge with its various scales of abstraction. Example of indigenous knowledge derived from the field of architecture such as how the building interacts with the nature will be further explained. It is hoped, that this paper, will uncover the fertility of novels in terms of indigenous knowledge which can become inspiration in the field of architecture

    Working capital is important to carries out the daily operations of a company, the presence of sufficient working capital enables a company to not having a problem and difficulty in carrying out the activities. This research conducted at PT. Semen Indonesia (Persero), Tbk which is one of biggest cement plant in Indonesia. The purpose of this research was to know the working capital's management policy at PT. Semen Indonesia (Persero), Tbk and to determine whether the working capital to improve the liquidity and profitability. Method used in this research is a descriptive research with quantitative approach. The focus of this research are working capital's management included analysis of the sources and uses of working capital and the effectiveness of working capital's management, analysis of liquidity and profitability ratio. Data analysis during 2011-2013 shown that working capital's management at 2012 ineffective and at 2013 is effective. Analysis the ratio of liquidity shows that in 2012 liquidity company decrease and in 2013 increased. Analysis the ratio profitability shows that in 2012 profitability company hat increase and decreased in 2013
