Three Tuscan doctors, and three intriguing professional histories. The inventory of the papers of Pietro Betti, Carlo Burci and Vincenzio Chiarugi has made available an important archive heritage, which goes to supplement the partial knowledge deriving from the biographies and works of these figures who represented the bridge between the enlightened and revolutionary eighteenth century and the following century, taut between the claims of science and political and social influences. A great season for Medicine and Surgery is revisited through the voices of three important exponents of this period of knowledge and action, of a commitment – that is also contemporary – to care, to teaching and to research

Giuseppe Tartini’s “Devil’s Trill” Sonata: An Arrangement and Recording for Solo Violin

    Get PDF
abstract: This document is comprised of an arrangement and recording of Giuseppe Tartini’s “Devil’s Trill” Sonata for solo violin, and includes historical background, an exploration of Italian ornamentation, and a structural analysis. The original work was written for violin and basso continuo. The author was inspired to create this arrangement for solo violin based on accounts that Tartini liked to perform this work unaccompanied. The first three chapters focus on events from Tartini’s early life that influenced his compositional style. Chapters four and five provide an overview of Italian ornamentation, and explore five documents that were used to support decisions in creating the arrangement: Giovanni Luca Conforto’s The Joy of Ornamentation; Giuseppe Tartini’s Traité des Agréments de la Musique; Letter to Signora Maddalena Lombardini; Regole; and L’Arte dell Arco. Chapter six provides a structural analysis of the Sonata. The appendices illustrate the process of creating the arrangement. The arrangement takes into consideration the composite of the original solo and basso continuo parts. In addition, a set of realized ornaments is provided on an ossia staff. The recording includes both the primary arrangement, presented in each initial section, as well as the realized ornaments, presented in each repeated section.Dissertation/ThesisTartini "Devil's Trill" Sonata: Movement ITartini "Devil's Trill" Sonata: Movement IIITartini "Devil's Trill" Sonata: Movement IIDoctoral Dissertation Music 201

Alteration of p53 and Bax/ Bcl-2 ratio by fotemustine and proton irradiation

Deregulation of apoptosis commonly occurs in melanoma cells and could be a reason for resistance. The effectiveness of different treatments depends on their ability to activate this process. In this study the effects of combined treatments with fotemustine (FM) and proton irradiation on the regulators of apoptosis were analyzed. Sub-confluent HTB140 human melanoma cells were treated with FM (100, 250 µM) 24 h prior to irradiation (12, 16 Gy). Cells were irradiated in the middle of the therapeutic 62 MeV proton spread out Bragg peak. Flow cytometric analysis of apoptosis and the Western blot analysis of apoptotic regulators were performed 6 or 48 h after treatments. Percent of apoptotic nuclei increased after applied treatments, reaching the level of 4 to 41 %. Induction of apoptosis was associated with p53 and Bax up regulation and Bcl-2 down regulation. The obtained results imply that analyzed treatments induce apoptosis through the activation of the mitochondrial apoptotic pathway, with better pro-apoptotic effects achieved by combined treatments

Touching Impermanence: Experiential Embodied Engagements with Materiality in Contemporary Art Practice

    Get PDF
Touching impermanence describes the experiential moment in an art encounter when one senses the enchanted reality of one’s interconnections within the sentient matterflow of existence. All matter in existence is constantly vibrating, changing, assembling and evolving into forms and organisms, cycling through decay and disintegration, then reforming again with diversity and difference; this is the impermanence of sentient matter-flow. Humans are just one form of these reciprocal assemblages; we are within and part of sentient matter-flow. We also co-create with sentient matter-flow, changing these cycles on micro and macro levels, just as they change us. On a macro level human actions have impacted and changed the Earth’s biosphere, altering and polluting sentient matter-flows to the extent that our present time period is becoming known as the Anthropocene, the human age of destruction and disconnection. There are many efforts to readdress our anthropocentric feelings of apathetic disconnection from the Earth; one is found in the arts and correlates with my practice-led research. This doctoral study of sensate experiences of materiality and haptic thinking, which provide both maker and audience with direct palpable experience of time, forms a specific understanding of touching impermanence. My art processes involve working with tactile materials such as beeswax; tree branches, stumps and bark; paper; ash; rocks; ice; snow; charcoal; light and fungi. Engaging with these materials cocreatively involves a methodology of touch, multisensorily following materialities’ sentient matter-flow. Acting with the material, I am present to the material’s own sense of time, interactions, agency, histories, layers of interbeing and interconnections with surrounding matter. This requires being open to the mysteriousness of materials, inviting moments of enchantment within art encounters and the realisation of touching impermanence. This thesis investigates my studio practice and works produced, alongside related practices of Australian and international artists, by drawing on the intersections between New Materialism discourses and Buddhist philosophy to address aspects of phenomenology and eco-philosophy in the complexities of these art practices and artwork encounters
