This paper presents findings from a study exploring the teacher education needs of experienced english for specific purposes (esp) instructors. It discusses data from interviews with 19 experienced in-service teachers of esp in two spanish universities. The interviews aimed to develop an understanding of the teachers’ views of esp teaching, the kinds of knowledge and skills they required and the forms of support that could be of benefit to them. Results suggested that the teachers perceived needs in five areas: course development, knowledge of the target discipline, knowledge of language use in the target discipline, peer collaboration, and professional development opportunities.

    Get PDF
We satellite-tracked five Humboldt penguins during the strong 1997/98 El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) from their breeding island Pan de Azúcar (26 degrees 09'S, 70 degrees 40'W) in Northern Chile and related their activities at sea to satellite-derived information on sea surface temperature (SST), sea surface temperature anomaly (SSTA), wind direction and speed, chlorophyll a concentrations and statistical data on fishery landings. We found that Humboldt penguins migrated by up to 895 km as marine productivity decreased. The total daily dive duration was highly correlated with SSTA, ranging from 3.1 to 12.5 h when the water was at its warmest (+4 degrees C). Birds travelled between 2 and 116 km every day, travelling further when SSTA was highest. Diving depths (maximum 54 m), however, were not increased with respect to previous years. Two penguins migrated south and, independently of each other, located an area of high chlorophyll a concentration 150 km off the coast. Humboldt penguins seem to use day length, temperature gradients, wind direction and olfaction to adapt to changing environmental conditions and to find suitable feeding grounds. This makes Humboldt penguins biological in situ detectors of highly productive marine areas, with a potential use in the verification of trends detected by remote sensors on board satellites

Which Came First, the Chicken or the Egg? Sequences and Genealogies in between Architecture and Design for a Global History

    Get PDF
Some among the early “classics” of history of project, such as Giedion or Pevsner, united architecture and design leaning towards anonymity and industrialism and eliminating the division between the two disci- plines. They were related with an ideological notion of style: the “Modern”. Afterwards other approaches suggested another use of sequences of objects in a larger continuum instead of the use of “style” notion (Kubler, Bloch and Foucault). Joining these different points of start together with the latest contribution (Margolin, 2015) the paper aims to explore the possibilities given by compiling timelines and sequences that mix different approaches in a larg- er vision of the project disciplines to obtain the web for a global history implementable and queryable at different levels and using a broader range of design studies. The goal is trying to outline and schematically show a continuous conversation throughout time and space, maintaining the specificities of historical research and an inclusive and broader sight on the flow of time. To instruct a reflection on this opportunity the paper will wonder on the possibilities to organize se- quences on specific or general topics using tools as the managing of data flows and their representations

Henri Crouzel, in his classical book on Origen, says that the fall of souls was caused by acedia as displease for the contemplation (Origène, [P. Lethielleux, Paris, 1985], 273). Marguerite Harl analyses deeply the expression κόρον λαβεῖν in the De principiis, in F. L. Cross (ed.), Studia Patristica VIII, Texte und Untersuchungen 93 [Akademie Verlag, Berlin, 1966] 373-405). This paper aims to ratify some of the Harl’s assertions and compare them with Evagrius Ponticus’ works who, in Kephalaia gnostica, repeats Origen’s assertion. The deep and complete Evagrius’ theorization on the sloth adds interesting nuances to the discussion.Fil: Peretó Rivas, Rubén Angel. Consejo Nacional de Investigaciones Científicas y Técnicas.
