The Relationship Between North and Middle American \u3ci\u3eStenonema\u3c/i\u3e (Ephemeroptera: Heptageniidae)

    Get PDF
Stenonema integrum (McDunnough) is shown to be a junior synonym of S. mexicanum (Ulmer.) n.syn. Subspecific status is delegated to Nearctic and Neotropical populations of this species as S. m. imegrum and S, m. mexicanum, respectively. Newly studied materials from Costa Rica and Belize indicate that adults of the two subspecies may be differentiated by the presence of thoracie pleural stripes in S. m. mexicanum. Consistent differentiating lanai characteristics are not known, A Pleistocene dispersal into Middle America and subsequent vicariance is hypothesized

    The Higher Spin/Vector Model Duality

This paper is mainly a review of the dualities between Vasiliev's higher spin gauge theories in AdS4 and three dimensional large N vector models, with focus on the holographic calculation of correlation functions of higher spin currents. We also present some new results in the computation of parity odd structures in the three point functions in parity violating Vasiliev theories.Comment: 55 pages, 1 figure. Contribution to J. Phys. Mixed-symmetry tensor conserved currents and AdS/CFT correspondence

We present the full list of conserved currents built of two massless spinor fields in Minkowski space and their derivatives multiplied by Clifford algebra elements. The currents have particular mixed-symmetry type described by Young diagrams with one row and one column of arbitrary lengths and heights. Along with Yukawa-like totally antisymmetric currents the complete set of constructed currents exactly matches the spectrum of AdS mixed-symmetry fields arising in the generalized Flato-Fronsdal theorem for two spinor singletons. As a by-product, we formulate and study general properties of primary fields and conserved currents of mixed-symmetry type.Comment: 17 pages; v2: typos corrected, clarifications and refs added; v3: more explanations and refs added; contribution to the J.Phys.A special volume on "Higher Spin Theories and AdS/CFT" edited by Matthias Gaberdiel and Mikhail Vasilie

    Composite fluxbranes with general intersections

    Get PDF
Generalized composite fluxbrane solutions for a wide class of intersection rules are obtained. The solutions are defined on a manifold which contains a product of n Ricci-flat spaces M_1 x ... x M_n with 1-dimensional M_1. They are defined up to a set of functions H_s obeying non-linear differential equations equivalent to Toda-type equations with certain boundary conditions imposed. A conjecture on polynomial structure of governing functions H_s for intersections related to semisimple Lie algebras is suggested. This conjecture is valid for Lie algebras: A_m, C_{m+1}, m > 0. For simple Lie algebras the powers of polynomials coincide with the components of the dual Weyl vector in the basis of simple roots. Explicit formulas for A_1 + ... + A_1 (orthogonal), "block-ortogonal" and A_2 solutions are obtained. Certain examples of solutions in D = 11 and D =10 (II A) supergravities (e.g. with A_2 intersection rules) and Kaluza-Klein dyonic A_2 flux tube, are considered.Comment: 19 pages, Latex, 1 reference (on a pioneering paper of Gibbons and Wiltshire) and two missing relations are added Published: Class. SAURON: An Innovative Look at Early-Type Galaxies

    Get PDF
A summary of the SAURON project and its current status is presented. SAURON is a panoramic integral-field spectrograph designed to study the stellar kinematics, gaseous kinematics, and stellar populations of spheroids. Here, the sample of galaxies and its properties are described. The instrument is detailed and its capabilities illustrated through observational examples. These includes results on the structure of central stellar disks, the kinematics and ionization state of gaseous disks, and the stellar populations of galaxies with decoupled cores.Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures. Colliding Kaluza-Klein Bubbles

    Get PDF
We construct an exact solution describing the collision of two Kaluza-Klein "bubbles of nothing" in 3+1 dimensions. When the bubbles collide, a curvature singularity forms which is hidden inside an event horizon. However, unlike the formation of ordinary black holes, in this case the spacetime resembles the entire maximally extended Schwarzschild solution. We also point out that there are inequivalent bubbles that can be constructed from Kerr black holes.Comment: 20 pages, v2: minor error correcte

Beware of Courts Bearing Gifts: Transparency and the Court of Justice of the European Union

    Get PDF
This article reconsiders the principle of transparency in the European Union (EU) legal order and takes as its focal point the contribution of the EU Courts as regards the presumptions of non-disclosure of EU documents. The aim is to investigate the role played by the judiciary in relation to a twofold question: How open can the Union’s decision-making be, and is it possible for citizens to participate in the decision-making process of EU institutions, bodies, offices and agencies? The article argues that accountability deficits in the field of access to documents have been filled, to an extent, by the EU Courts’ imposition of boundaries on the broad derogations to the right of access to documents. But nevertheless, the article concludes that the establishment through the case law of general presumptions against openness has fundamentally weakened the standards of accountability. Rather regrettably, although the EU legislature set the default position to the widest access to documents, this has been reversed to non-disclosure by the EU judiciary as regards non-legislative documents

Current Methods to Unravel the Functional Properties of Lysosomal Ion Channels and Transporters

    Get PDF
open18siA distinct set of channels and transporters regulates the ion fluxes across the lysosomal membrane. Malfunctioning of these transport proteins and the resulting ionic imbalance is involved in various human diseases, such as lysosomal storage disorders, cancer, as well as metabolic and neurodegenerative diseases. As a consequence, these proteins have stimulated strong interest for their suitability as possible drug targets. A detailed functional characterization of many lysosomal channels and transporters is lacking, mainly due to technical difficulties in applying the standard patch-clamp technique to these small intracellular compartments. In this review, we focus on current methods used to unravel the functional properties of lysosomal ion channels and transporters, stressing their advantages and disadvantages and evaluating their fields of applicability.openFesta M.; Minicozzi V.; Boccaccio A.; Lagostena L.; Gradogna A.; Qi T.; Costa A.; Larisch N.; Hamamoto S.; Pedrazzini E.; Milenkovic S.; Scholz-Starke J.; Ceccarelli M.; Vitale A.; Dietrich P.; Uozumi N.; Gambale F.; Carpaneto A.Festa, M.; Minicozzi, V.; Boccaccio, A.; Lagostena, L.; Gradogna, A.; Qi, T.; Costa, A.; Larisch, N.; Hamamoto, S.; Pedrazzini, E.; Milenkovic, S.; Scholz-Starke, J.; Ceccarelli, M.; Vitale, A.; Dietrich, P.; Uozumi, N.; Gambale, F.; Carpaneto, A
