    Determination of the Interior Orientation Parameters of a Non-metric Digital Camera for Terrestrial Photogrammetric Applications

    AbstractHigh cost of metric photogrammetric cameras has given rise to the utilisation of non-metric digital cameras to generate photogrammetric products in traditional close range or terrestrial photogrammetric applications. For precision photogrammetric applications, the internal metric characteristics of the camera, customarily known as the Interior Orientation Parameters, need to be determined and analysed. The derivation of these parameters is usually achieved by implementing a bundle adjustment with self-calibration procedure. The stability of the Interior Orientation Parameters is an issue in terms of accuracy in digital cameras since they are not built with photogrammetric applications in mind. This study utilised two photogrammetric software (i.e. Photo Modeler and Australis) to calibrate a non-metric digital camera to determine its Interior Orientation Parameters. The camera parameters were obtained using the two software and the Root Mean Square Errors (RMSE) calculated. It was observed that Australis gave a RMSE of 0.2435 and Photo Modeler gave 0.2335, implying that, the calibrated non-metric digital camera is suitable for high precision terrestrial photogrammetric projects. Keywords: Camera Calibration, Interior Orientation Parameters, Non-Metric Digital Camer

    A Full Scale Camera Calibration Technique with Automatic Model Selection – Extension and Validation

    This thesis presents work on the testing and development of a complete camera calibration approach which can be applied to a wide range of cameras equipped with normal, wide-angle, fish-eye, or telephoto lenses. The full scale calibration approach estimates all of the intrinsic and extrinsic parameters. The calibration procedure is simple and does not require prior knowledge of any parameters. The method uses a simple planar calibration pattern. Closed-form estimates for the intrinsic and extrinsic parameters are computed followed by nonlinear optimization. Polynomial functions are used to describe the lens projection instead of the commonly used radial model. Statistical information criteria are used to automatically determine the complexity of the lens distortion model. In the first stage experiments were performed to verify and compare the performance of the calibration method. Experiments were performed on a wide range of lenses. Synthetic data was used to simulate real data and validate the performance. Synthetic data was also used to validate the performance of the distortion model selection which uses Information Theoretic Criterion (AIC) to automatically select the complexity of the distortion model. In the second stage work was done to develop an improved calibration procedure which addresses shortcomings of previously developed method. Experiments on the previous method revealed that the estimation of the principal point during calibration was erroneous for lenses with a large focal length. To address this issue the calibration method was modified to include additional methods to accurately estimate the principal point in the initial stages of the calibration procedure. The modified procedure can now be used to calibrate a wide spectrum of imaging systems including telephoto and verifocal lenses. Survey of current work revealed a vast amount of research concentrating on calibrating only the distortion of the camera. In these methods researchers propose methods to calibrate only the distortion parameters and suggest using other popular methods to find the remaining camera parameters. Using this proposed methodology we apply distortion calibration to our methods to separate the estimation of distortion parameters. We show and compare the results with the original method on a wide range of imaging systems

    Calibration of smartphone’s rear dual camera system

    This paper aims to calibrate smartphone’s rear dual camera system which is composed of two lenses, namely; wide-angle lens and telephoto lens. The proposed approach handles large sized images. Calibration was done by capturing 13 photos for a chessboard pattern from different exposure positions. First, photos were captured in dual camera mode. Then, for both wide-angle and telephoto lenses, image coordinates for node points of the chessboard were extracted. Afterwards, intrinsic, extrinsic, and lens distortion parameters for each lens were calculated. In order to enhance the accuracy of the calibration model, a constrained least-squares solution was applied. The applied constraint was that the relative extrinsic parameters of both wide-angle and telephoto lenses were set as constant regardless of the exposure position. Moreover, photos were rectified in order to eliminate the effect of lens distortion. For results evaluation, two oriented photos were chosen to perform a stereo-pair intersection. Then, the node points of the chessboard pattern were used as check points

    Camera calibration in sport event scenarios

    The main goal of this paper is the design of a novel and robust methodology for calibrating cameras from a single image in sport scenarios, such as a soccer field, or a basketball or tennis court. In these sport scenarios, the only references we use to calibrate the camera are the lines and circles delimiting the different regions. The first problem we address is the extraction of image primitives, including the challenging problems of shaded regions and lens distortion. From these primitives, we automatically recognise the location of the sport court in the scene by estimating the homography which matches the actual court with its projection onto the image. This is achieved even when only a few primitives are available. Finally, from this homography, we recover the camera calibration parameters. In particular, we estimate the focal length as well as the position and orientation in the 3D space. We present some experiments on models and real courts which illustrate the accuracy of the proposed methodology

    Lightfield Analysis and Its Applications in Adaptive Optics and Surveillance Systems

    An image can only be as good as the optics of a camera or any other imaging system allows it to be. An imaging system is merely a transformation that takes a 3D world coordinate to a 2D image plane. This can be done through both linear/non-linear transfer functions. Depending on the application at hand it is easier to use some models of imaging systems over the others in certain situations. The most well-known models are the 1) Pinhole model, 2) Thin Lens Model and 3) Thick lens model for optical systems. Using light-field analysis the connection through these different models is described. A novel figure of merit is presented on using one optical model over the other for certain applications. After analyzing these optical systems, their applications in plenoptic cameras for adaptive optics applications are introduced. A new technique to use a plenoptic camera to extract information about a localized distorted planar wave front is described. CODEV simulations conducted in this thesis show that its performance is comparable to those of a Shack-Hartmann sensor and that they can potentially increase the dynamic range of angles that can be extracted assuming a paraxial imaging system. As a final application, a novel dual PTZ-surveillance system to track a target through space is presented. 22X optic zoom lenses on high resolution pan/tilt platforms recalibrate a master-slave relationship based on encoder readouts rather than complicated image processing algorithms for real-time target tracking. As the target moves out of a region of interest in the master camera, it is moved to force the target back into the region of interest. Once the master camera is moved, a precalibrated lookup table is interpolated to compute the relationship between the master/slave cameras. The homography that relates the pixels of the master camera to the pan/tilt settings of the slave camera then continue to follow the planar trajectories of targets as they move through space at high accuracies

    A study on the geometric stability and decentering present in sensor-lens systems of six identical compact digital cameras has been conducted. With regard to geometrical stability, the variation of internal geometry parameters (principal distance, principal point position and distortion parameters) was considered. With regard to lens decentering, the amount of radial and tangential displacement resulting from decentering distortion was related with the precision of the camera and with the offset of the principal point from the geometric center of the sensor. The study was conducted with data obtained after 372 calibration processes (62 per camera). The tests were performed for each camera in three situations: during continuous use of the cameras, after camera power off/on and after the full extension and retraction of the zoom-lens. Additionally, 360 new calibrations were performed in order to study the variation of the internal geometry when the camera is rotated. The aim of this study was to relate the level of stability and decentering in a camera with the precision and quality that can be obtained. An additional goal was to provide practical recommendations about photogrammetric use of such cameras
