    I introduce and advocate for the concept of Real-Time Systems Compilation. By analogy with classical compilation, real-time systems compilation consists in the fully automatic construction of running, correct-by-construction implementations from functional and non-functional specifications of embedded control systems. Like in a classical compiler, the whole process must be fast (thus enabling a trial-and-error design style) and produce reasonably efficient code. This requires the use of fast heuristics, and the use of fine-grain platform and application models. Unlike a classical compiler, a real-time systems compiler must take into account non-functional properties of a system and ensure the respect of non-functional requirements (in addition to functional correctness). I also present Lopht, a real-time systems compiler for statically-scheduled real-time systems we built by combining techniques and concepts from real-time scheduling, compilation, and synchronous languages

    Improving Model-Based Software Synthesis: A Focus on Mathematical Structures

    Computer hardware keeps increasing in complexity. Software design needs to keep up with this. The right models and abstractions empower developers to leverage the novelties of modern hardware. This thesis deals primarily with Models of Computation, as a basis for software design, in a family of methods called software synthesis. We focus on Kahn Process Networks and dataflow applications as abstractions, both for programming and for deriving an efficient execution on heterogeneous multicores. The latter we accomplish by exploring the design space of possible mappings of computation and data to hardware resources. Mapping algorithms are not at the center of this thesis, however. Instead, we examine the mathematical structure of the mapping space, leveraging its inherent symmetries or geometric properties to improve mapping methods in general. This thesis thoroughly explores the process of model-based design, aiming to go beyond the more established software synthesis on dataflow applications. We starting with the problem of assessing these methods through benchmarking, and go on to formally examine the general goals of benchmarks. In this context, we also consider the role modern machine learning methods play in benchmarking. We explore different established semantics, stretching the limits of Kahn Process Networks. We also discuss novel models, like Reactors, which are designed to be a deterministic, adaptive model with time as a first-class citizen. By investigating abstractions and transformations in the Ohua language for implicit dataflow programming, we also focus on programmability. The focus of the thesis is in the models and methods, but we evaluate them in diverse use-cases, generally centered around Cyber-Physical Systems. These include the 5G telecommunication standard, automotive and signal processing domains. We even go beyond embedded systems and discuss use-cases in GPU programming and microservice-based architectures

    Programming and Timing Analysis of Parallel Programs on Multicores

    International audienceMulticore processors provide better power-performance trade-offs compared to single-core processors. Consequently, they are rapidly penetrating market segments which are both safety critical and hard real-time in nature. However, designing time-predictable embedded applications over multicores remains a considerable challenge. This paper proposes the ForeC language for the deterministic parallel programming of embedded applications on multicores. ForeC extends C with a minimal set of constructs adopted from synchronous languages. To guarantee the worst-case performance of ForeC programs, we offer a very precise reachability- based timing analyzer. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first attempt at the efficient and deterministic parallel programming of multicores using a synchronous C-variant. Experimentation with large multicore programs revealed an average over-estimation of only 2% for the computed worst-case execution times (WCETs). By reducing our representation of the programs state-space, we reduced the analysis time for the largest program (with 43, 695 reachable states) by a factor of 342, to only 7 seconds

    Patterns for Providing Real-Time Guarantees in DOC Middleware - Doctoral Dissertation, May 2002

    The advent of open and widely adopted standards such as Common Object Request Broker Architecture (CORBA) [47] has simplified and standardized the development of distributed applications. For applications with real-time constraints, including avionics, manufacturing, and defense systems, these standards are evolving to include Quality-of-Service (QoS) specifications. Operating systems such as Real-time Linux [60] have responded with interfaces and algorithms to guarantee real-time response; similarly, languages such as Real-time Java [59] include mechanisms for specifying real-time properties for threads. However, the middleware upon which large distributed applications are based has not yet addressed end-to-end guarantees of QoS specifications. Unless this challenge can be met, developers must resort to ad hoc solutions that may not scale or migrate well among different platforms. This thesis provides two contributions to the study of real-time Distributed Object Computing (DOC) middleware. First, it identifies potential bottlenecks and problems with respect to guaranteeing real-time performance in contemporary middleware. Experimental results illustrate how these problems lead to incorrect real-time behavior in contemporary middleware platforms. Second, this thesis presents designs and techniques for providing real-time QoS guarantees in DOC middleware in the context of TAO [6], an open-source and widely adopted implementation of real-time CORBA. Architectural solutions presented here are coupled with empirical evaluations of end-to-end real-time behavior. Analysis of the problems, forces, solutions, and consequences are presented in terms of patterns and frame-works, so that solutions obtained for TAO can be appropriately applied to other real-time systems

    Rigorous System Design

    The monograph advocates rigorous system design as a coherent and accountable model-based process leading from requirements to correct implementations. It presents the current state of the art in system design, discusses its limitations, and identifies possible avenues for overcoming them. A rigorous system design flow is defined as a formal accountable and iterative process composed of steps, and based on four principles: (1) separation of concerns; (2) component-based construction; (3) semantic coherency; and (4) correctness-by-construction. The combined application of these principles allows the definition of a methodology clearly identifying where human intervention and ingenuity are needed to resolve design choices, as well as activities that can be supported by tools to automate tedious and error-prone tasks. An implementable system model is progressively derived by source-to-source automated transformations in a single host component-based language rooted in well-defined semantics. Using a single modeling language throughout the design flow enforces semantic coherency. Correct-by-construction techniques allow well-known limitations of a posteriori verification to be overcome and ensure accountability. It is possible to explain, at each design step, which among the requirements are satisfied and which may not be satisfied. The presented view for rigorous system design has been amply implemented in the BIP (Behavior, Interaction, Priority) component framework and substantiated by numerous experimental results showing both its relevance and feasibility. The monograph concludes with a discussion advocating a system-centric vision for computing, identifying possible links with other disciplines, and emphasizing centrality of system design

    Operating System Support for Redundant Multithreading

    Failing hardware is a fact and trends in microprocessor design indicate that the fraction of hardware suffering from permanent and transient faults will continue to increase in future chip generations. Researchers proposed various solutions to this issue with different downsides: Specialized hardware components make hardware more expensive in production and consume additional energy at runtime. Fault-tolerant algorithms and libraries enforce specific programming models on the developer. Compiler-based fault tolerance requires the source code for all applications to be available for recompilation. In this thesis I present ASTEROID, an operating system architecture that integrates applications with different reliability needs. ASTEROID is built on top of the L4/Fiasco.OC microkernel and extends the system with Romain, an operating system service that transparently replicates user applications. Romain supports single- and multi-threaded applications without requiring access to the application's source code. Romain replicates applications and their resources completely and thereby does not rely on hardware extensions, such as ECC-protected memory. In my thesis I describe how to efficiently implement replication as a form of redundant multithreading in software. I develop mechanisms to manage replica resources and to make multi-threaded programs behave deterministically for replication. I furthermore present an approach to handle applications that use shared-memory channels with other programs. My evaluation shows that Romain provides 100% error detection and more than 99.6% error correction for single-bit flips in memory and general-purpose registers. At the same time, Romain's execution time overhead is below 14% for single-threaded applications running in triple-modular redundant mode. The last part of my thesis acknowledges that software-implemented fault tolerance methods often rely on the correct functioning of a certain set of hardware and software components, the Reliable Computing Base (RCB). I introduce the concept of the RCB and discuss what constitutes the RCB of the ASTEROID system and other fault tolerance mechanisms. Thereafter I show three case studies that evaluate approaches to protecting RCB components and thereby aim to achieve a software stack that is fully protected against hardware errors

    System Level LET with Application to Automotive Design

    The logical execution time (LET) programming model has been applied in the automotive industry to master multicore programming of large task systems with complex dependencies. Recent developments in electric powertrains and autonomous vehicle functions raise parallel programming from the multicore level to the vehicle level where the requirements for LET application do not hold any more. This paper introduces System Level LET (SL LET), an extension of LET with relaxed synchronization requirements. While related extensions have been proposed for specific scheduling and communication models before, SL LET can be used with a variety of scheduling algorithms and communication semantics. Furthermore, it can be applied to systems with combinations of LET and other programming models. Yet, SL LET allows end-to-end timing guarantees and preserves essential LET properties required for automotive systems. For illustration, we apply the model to an electric vehicle use case

    Ordonnancement hybride des applications flots de données sur des systèmes embarqués multi-coeurs

    Les systèmes embarqués sont de plus en plus présents dans l'industrie comme dans la vie quotidienne. Une grande partie de ces systèmes comprend des applications effectuant du traitement intensif des données: elles utilisent de nombreux filtres numériques, où les opérations sur les données sont répétitives et ont un contrôle limité. Les graphes "flots de données", grâce à leur déterminisme fonctionnel inhérent, sont très répandus pour modéliser les systèmes embarqués connus sous le nom de "data-driven". L'ordonnancement statique et périodique des graphes flot de données a été largement étudié, surtout pour deux modèles particuliers: SDF et CSDF. Dans cette thèse, on s'intéresse plus particulièrement à l'ordonnancement périodique des graphes CSDF. Le problème consiste à identifier des séquences périodiques infinies d'actionnement des acteurs qui aboutissent à des exécutions complètes à buffers bornés. L'objectif est de pouvoir aborder ce problème sous des angles différents : maximisation de débit, minimisation de la latence et minimisation de la capacité des buffers. La plupart des travaux existants proposent des solutions pour l'optimisation du débit et négligent le problème d'optimisation de la latence et propose même dans certains cas des ordonnancements qui ont un impact négatif sur elle afin de conserver les propriétés de périodicité. On propose dans cette thèse un ordonnancement hybride, nommé Self-Timed Périodique (STP), qui peut conserver les propriétés d'un ordonnancement périodique et à la fois améliorer considérablement sa performance en terme de latence.One of the most important aspects of parallel computing is its close relation to the underlying hardware and programming models. In this PhD thesis, we take dataflow as the basic model of computation, as it fits the streaming application domain. Cyclo-Static Dataflow (CSDF) is particularly interesting because this variant is one of the most expressive dataflow models while still being analyzable at design time. Describing the system at higher levels of abstraction is not sufficient, e.g. dataflow have no direct means to optimize communication channels generally based on shared buffers. Therefore, we need to link the dataflow MoCs used for performance analysis of the programs, the real time task models used for timing analysis and the low-level model used to derive communication times. This thesis proposes a design flow that meets these challenges, while enabling features such as temporal isolation and taking into account other challenges such as predictability and ease of validation. To this end, we propose a new scheduling policy noted Self-Timed Periodic (STP), which is an execution model combining Self-Timed Scheduling (STS) with periodic scheduling. In STP scheduling, actors are no longer strictly periodic but self-timed assigned to periodic levels: the period of each actor under periodic scheduling is replaced by its worst-case execution time. Then, STP retains some of the performance and flexibility of self-timed schedule, in which execution times of actors need only be estimates, and at the same time makes use of the fact that with a periodic schedule we can derive a tight estimation of the required performance metrics
