    Training and development methods and organizational performance: A case of the local government organization in Central Region, Ghana

    Purpose: Is to investigate the relationship between training and development (T&D) methods and organizational performance in the local government sector, as well as contribute to knowledge. Research Methodology: The study employed a quantitative approach and correlation design, a census sampling method to sample 215 employees, a structured questionnaire to collect data, multiple linear regression to test hypotheses, and the Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) version 20 to input, transform and analyze the data. Result: The result shows that training and development (T & D) methods (job orientation, job rotation, workshop & conference, and classroom lectures) had a significant relationship with organizational performance. The findings also revealed that training and development (T & D) methods (job orientation, workshop & conference, and classroom lectures) have a significant relationship with the quality of service delivery. However, job rotation has no relationship with quality service delivery. Limitation: The study's main weakness is that it only looked at four different training and development methods and their impact on organizational performance and service quality. Another flaw in the study is that it only looked at one metropolitan assembly. Contribution: In this regard, metropolitan and municipal assembly executives and managers should consider employing training and development methods that provide stronger predictions to boost the organization’s performance and delivery of quality services to communities. They should train and develop employees within the organization as soon as political power changes hands to enhance organization performance because policy adherence is critical to the organization's performance

    On-the job knowledge sharing: how to train employees to share job knowledge

    One of the challenging issues many organizations are facing is to find the best ways to encourage employees share what they have learned on their jobs. Rewarding employees may be one of the techniques used to promote knowledge sharing but there are still psychological barriers preventing employees from sharing knowledge. In many cases, rewarding employees for sharing knowledge ends up in developing the behaviour of hoarding knowledge among employees. Based on a review of existing literature, this article explains how employers can make employees practice knowledge sharing in their daily work activities. The article introduces 12 approaches on how knowledge sharing can be cultivated in the job and train employees to accept that it is their job to share knowledge. Some of the methods discussed include; peer assist, training and mentoring, challenging projects, job description, job rotation, cross training, and sharing sessions. The article also discusses how on-the-job knowledge sharing can promote individual performance among employees. The intention of this article is to provide a framework that helps organizations to choose various methods of knowledge sharing that suit the organization’s needs in order to cultivate sharing of job knowledge and to save the knowledge as an asset

    There is an international commitment to develop a comprehensive, coordinated and sustained ocean observation system. However, a foundation for any observing, monitoring or research effort is effective and reliable in situ sensor technologies that accurately measure key environmental parameters. Ultimately, the data used for modelling efforts, management decisions and rapid responses to ocean hazards are only as good as the instruments that collect them. There is also a compelling need to develop and incorporate new or novel technologies to improve all aspects of existing observing systems and meet various emerging challenges. Assessment of Sensor Performance was a cross-cutting issues session at the international OceanSensors08 workshop in Warnemünde, Germany, which also has penetrated some of the papers published as a result of the workshop (Denuault, 2009; Kröger et al., 2009; Zielinski et al., 2009). The discussions were focused on how best to classify and validate the instruments required for effective and reliable ocean observations and research. The following is a summary of the discussions and conclusions drawn from this workshop, which specifically addresses the characterisation of sensor systems, technology readiness levels, verification of sensor performance and quality management of sensor systems
