Current-induced gap opening in interacting topological insulator surfaces

Two-dimensional topological insulators (TIs) host gapless helical edge states that are predicted to support a quantized two-terminal conductance. Quantization is protected by time-reversal symmetry, which forbids elastic backscattering. Paradoxically, the current-carrying state itself breaks the time-reversal symmetry that protects it. Here we show that the combination of electron-electron interactions and momentum-dependent spin polarization in helical edge states gives rise to feedback through which an applied current opens a gap in the edge state dispersion, thereby breaking the protection against elastic backscattering. Current-induced gap opening is manifested via a nonlinear contribution to the system's $I-V$ characteristic, which persists down to zero temperature. We discuss prospects for realizations in recently discovered large bulk band gap TIs, and an analogous current-induced gap opening mechanism for the surface states of three-dimensional TIs.Comment: 6 pages, 2 figures, published versio

DIMENSI PERSONAL DAN DIMENSI KOLEKTIF DALAM BUDAYA POPULER: KAJIAN PSIKOLOGI ANALITIS DALAM FILM FATE: THE WINX SAGA

This article tries to explore some of the implication of Carl Gustav Jung’s theory of personal dimension and collective dimension as represented by the characters in Fate: The Winx saga. This film is produced by Netflix and released on 22 January 2021. In this research, film is assumed as media to validate Jung’s theory about human psyche. This research is a qualitative descriptive. The data were processed by analyzing, categorizing, and interpreting the visual codes provided by the film. Therefore, the meaning can be theoretically drawn. The result of this study shows that the personal and collective dimensions offered by Jung are owned by the characters in the film. The personal dimension manifests in the Ego in the form of emotions and memories of the past. This personal dimension is represented through the characters such as Bloom, Musa, and Terra. While the collective dimension can be explained through the persona, shadow, anima and animus shared by all the characters in the film

Relational Representations in Reinforcement Learning: Review and Open Problems

This paper is about representation in RL.We discuss some of the concepts in representation and generalization in reinforcement learning and argue for higher-order representations, instead of the commonly used propositional representations. The paper contains a small review of current reinforcement learning systems using higher-order representations, followed by a brief discussion. Loitsuja, lempeä ja paletin kaikki pastellivärit : Sukupuoli, toiminta ja sankaruus animaatiosarjassa Winx-klubi

Pro gradu -tutkielmassani perehdyin suosittuun animaatiosarjaan Winx-klubiin sen sisältämien sukupuolen ja toiminnan kuvausten kannalta. Hyödynsin narratologista lähestymistapaa. Winx-klubin henkilöhahmoja ja niiden välisiä suhteita pohtiessani nojauduin Proppin ja Greimas’n aktanttimalleihin sekä Satu Apon satuanalyysiin. Sukupuoleen liittyvää analyysia suoritin pohjautuen erityisesti Judith Butlerin tulkintaan sukupuolesta toiston kautta syntyvänä performanssina, ei staattisena rakenteena. Lisäksi tarkastelin Winx-klubin estetiikkaa ja ulkoasua osana sitä, kuinka sarja konstruoi sukupuolta. Winx-klubi on pitkäikäinen ja maailmanlaajuisesti suosittu animaatiosarja, joten se on mielenkiintoinen ja relevantti tutkimuskohde. Rajasin aineistoni Winx-klubin viidenteen tuotantokauteen, joka sisältää 26 jaksoa. Käytin näiden jaksojen juonenkäänteitä ja muuta sisältöä analyysini pohjana. Tarkastelin sarjan sankarittaria eli Winx-keijuja moderneina tyttösankareina. Tutkimukseni paljasti, että Winx-keijut toden totta ovat voimakkaita, itsenäisiä ja taitavia supersankareita, jotka osaavat pelastaa maailman ilman miespuolisten hahmojen apua. Yksityiselämän puolella he kuitenkin kaipaavat poikaystäviensä tarjoamaa romanssia ja kannustusta. Ulkonäkönsä puolesta he ovat perifeminiinisiä ja hyperseksualisoituja, siis miehisen katseen kautta konstruoituja. Toiminnan puolella Winx-keijut siis uudistavat sankarittaren mallia, sillä perinteisissä saduissa ja enemmistössä aikaisemmista lastenohjelmista naisen rooli on ollut passivinen, pelastamisen kohteeksi joutuva ja korkeintaan miehen avustuksella urotekoja tekevä. Toisaalta Winx-keijujen modernia naiseutta tasapäistää heidän perinteisen feminiininen ja hyperseksualisoitu ulkonäkönsä sekä heteroromanssin ja miehiltä saadun hyväksynnän avainrooli heidän elämässään. Tuloksista voidaan päätellä, että vaikka lastenohjelmissa onkin nykyään tarjolla aktiivisen ja itsenäisen sankarittaren malleja, näissä on edelleen ongelmansa. Jatkotutkimusta olisi mielenkiintoista suunnata myös tytöille suunnattujen animaatiosarjojen mieshahmoihin - millaista maskuliinisuutta he edustavat? Toinen kiinnostava suunta olisi perehtyä enemmän näiden sarjojen antagonisteihin, erityisesti naispuolisiin ”pahiksiin”. Mikäli sankarittaret edustavat tavoiteltua feminiinisyyttä, millaisen kuvan naiseudesta maalaavat sarjojen naispuoliset kelmit ja konnat? Kolmas kiehtova aihe olisi Winx-klubin tarkempi tarkastelu transmediaalisena kokonaisuutena oheistuotteiden ja -ilmöiden sisältöihin ja merkityksiin syventyen

The contents of animated movies for younger school-age children

Ovaj rad usmjeren je na analizu sadrţaja u animiranim filmovima namijenjenima za djecu mlaĊe školske dobi. Animirani filmovi prate svako dijete kroz njegov put odrastanja, pa je tako i svrha ovog rada otkriti kakav televizijski sadrţaj djeca konzumiraju u svojoj najranijoj dobi. Analizom animiranih filmova Maša i Medvjed, Mišo i Robin, Doktorica Pliško, Vatrogasac Sam te Winx club, prikazat će se koliko se svakodnevno na ekranu mogu vidjeti razliĉiti oblici nasilja, bilo da su to prijetnje i omalovaţavanje ili udarci i stereotipi, ali i sadrţaji koji su edukativni, razvijaju empatiju te potiĉu maštu, pomaganje i suradnju. U skladu s navedenim, cilj ovog istraţivanja je analizirati primjerene i neprimjerene sadrţaje animiranih filmova namijenjenima za djecu mlaĊe školske dobi koji se prikazuju svakodnevno na hrvatskim televizijskim postajama. Polazi se od pretpostavke da se u animiranim filmovima, koje djeca gledaju u Hrvatskoj, moţe pronaći više neprimjerenih nego primjerenih sadrţaja, ali ta pretpostavka je kroz provedenu analizu u konaĉnici opovrgnuta.This paper focuses on content analysis in animated films designed for younger school children. Animated films follow each child through her growing time, so the purpose of this paper is to find out what kind of television content children are watching at their earliest age. Analyzing certain animated films will show how many different forms of violence can be seen on a daily screen, whether it is just threats or maladaptation or shocks, stereotypes and contents that are educational, develops empathy and encourages imagination, aiding and abetting. According to the above objective, this research is to analyze appropriate and inappropriate content, animated films intended for younger school children the ages that are shown daily on Croatian TV stations. It starts from the assumption that inappropriate content can be found in animated films seen by children in Croatia, however, this presumption is ultimately denied
