The intelligent industry of the future: A survey on emerging trends, research challenges and opportunities in Industry 4.0

    Get PDF
Strongly rooted in the Internet of Things and Cyber-Physical Systems-enabled manufacturing, disruptive paradigms like the Factory of the Future and Industry 4.0 envision knowledge-intensive industrial intelligent environments where smart personalized products are created through smart processes and procedures. The 4th industrial revolution will be based on Cyber-Physical Systems that will monitor, analyze and automate business processes, transforming production and logistic processes into smart factory environments where big data capabilities, cloud services and smart predictive decision support tools are used to increase productivity and efficiency. This survey provides insights into the latest developments in these domains, and identifies relevant research challenges and opportunities to shape the future of intelligent manufacturing environments.status: publishe

MIS RESEARCH: REFERENCE DISCIPLINES AND A CUMULATIVE TRADITION

    Get PDF
This paper discusses what is needed to make MIS into a coherent research field. It defines 3 main needs: 1. Clarification of reference disciplines. 2. Definition of the dependent variable. 3. Building a cumulative tradition. It reviews the relationship of MIS to computer technology and to practice and assess the publishing inlets for MIS research. The author would like to acknowledge with warm gratitude the contribution of Phillip Smith in helping shape the ideas expressed in this paper

Electronic Journals in Business Schools: Legitimacy, Acceptance, and Use

    Get PDF
This research provides insight into perceptions regarding electronic journals: a technological innovation in academia. Acceptance of electronic journals among business school faculty has two hurdles to overcome: technological and, more challenging, garnering legitimacy within the academic community. A survey targeted at business school faculty in the United States was conducted investigating faculty perceptions about the acceptance of electronic journals in their academic discipline. The findings suggest that at the time of publication, electronic publications were seen as less desirable than paper counterparts for tenure and review. However, it appears that electronic counterparts of existing journals would maintain their legitimacy from a promotion and tenure perspective, suggesting that the perceived legitimacy of the journal is the critical hurdle to overcome

Digital Transformation through Enterprise Systems: A Variance Model Linking the Drivers of Business Value and the Value Created from Enterprise Systems

    Get PDF
Currently, the potential of Enterprise Systems to transform organizations is emerging as a popular area of investigation. The aim of this study is to a) identify the means of such transformation or business value creation, beyond operational efficiency, that Enterprise Systems can enable and b) understand the drivers of such ES-enabled business value creation. This paper presented and found empirical support for a new model to establish relationships between the drivers of Enterprise Systemsenabled business value, and the business value created. The proposed model was empirically tested using data analysis of user cases of Enterprise Systems around the world. The study found evidence of support for both association and causality between drivers of business value (integrate, optimise and informate) and the business value created (Mergers and Acquisitions, Innovation, and Strategic Decision Making) from Enterprise Systems. This study can be treated as a foundation for further research for generalization of the proposed causal relationships between the value created by Enterprise Systems and the drivers of such value using detailed case studies, and uncovering more such causal relationships. The contribution of this paper is that it presents and empirically tests a new variance model that establishes causal relationships between drivers of business value from Enterprise Systems (integrate, optimise and informate) and the business value created (Mergers and Acquisitions, Innovation, and Strategic Decision Making)

Observers design for a new weakly coupled map function

An improved version of this paper will soon be publishd in Journal of Nonlinear Sytems and Applications (2009)International audienceIn some engineering applications, such as chaotic encryption, chaotic maps have to exhibit required statistical and spectral properties close to those of random signals. However, most of the papers dealing with synchronization and observer synthesis consider maps exhibiting poor statistical and spectral properties. Moreover, most of the time these properties, however essential for the chaotic encryption, are simply neglected. Unlike these papers, in our work we present the analysis of a new ultra weakly coupled maps system introduced by Lozi. The model is a deterministic one, but exhibits spectral properties (spectrum, correlation and autocorrelation) close to those of random signals, and successfully passed all the statistical tests for closeness to random signals (NIST). Two different observers have been designed. The convergence rate has been discussed in the case of affine maps, and the conditions to decrease the convergence rate by a factor of 16 have been presented, based on the locally linear behaviour of the weakly coupled map

e-TAM: a revision of the Technology Acceptance Model to explain website revisits

Retaining visitors at a corporate is arguably one of the most important objectives for e-commerce practitioners today. Unfortunately, it is also a notoriously difficult challenge. Little theory has been developed to understand why people return or fail to return to websites. In this paper we address this issue by developing a theoretical framework that models the factors influencing a visitor's return to a The framework is adapted from the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM), originally developed by Davis et al. A major revision involves the concept of perceived relative usefulness and perceived relative enjoyment as opposed to usefulness and enjoyment per se. This extension takes into account the notion that operate in a competitive environment, and that visitors judge the usefulness and enjoyment of a relative to the competing to which they have access. The paper discusses five propositions that are derived from the revised framework. Implications for further research and practical des..
