Behavioral and Network Origins of Wealth Inequality: Insights from a Virtual World
Almost universally, wealth is not distributed uniformly within societies or
economies. Even though wealth data have been collected in various forms for
centuries, the origins for the observed wealth-disparity and social inequality
are not yet fully understood. Especially the impact and connections of human
behavior on wealth could so far not be inferred from data. Here we study wealth
data from the virtual economy of the massive multiplayer online game (MMOG)
Pardus. This data not only contains every player's wealth at every point in
time, but also all actions of every player over a timespan of almost a decade.
We find that wealth distributions in the virtual world are very similar to
those in western countries. In particular we find an approximate exponential
for low wealth and a power-law tail. The Gini index is found to be ,
which is close to the indices of many Western countries. We find that
wealth-increase rates depend on the time when players entered the game. Players
that entered the game early on tend to have remarkably higher wealth-increase
rates than those who joined later. Studying the players' positions within their
social networks, we find that the local position in the trade network is most
relevant for wealth. Wealthy people have high in- and out-degree in the trade
network, relatively low nearest-neighbor degree and a low clustering
coefficient. Wealthy players have many mutual friendships and are socially well
respected by others, but spend more time on business than on socializing. We
find that players that are not organized within social groups with at least
three members are significantly poorer on average. We observe that high
`political' status and high wealth go hand in hand. Wealthy players have few
personal enemies, but show animosity towards players that behave as public
enemies.Comment: 22 pages, 8 figures, 8 pages S
Mobiles Internet in alpinen Destinationen
Since the disintegration of the Soviet Union, Russia has become Germanyâs main Central European partner. The economic interests and hopes of gigantic contracts to modernize the Russian economy have played a colossal role in German policy. The Government of Chancellor Angela Merkel aspired to shape the Eastern policy of the European Union, and it was highly favorable towards the strategy of Russian modernization to be implemented with the participation of Western partners, as proposed by President Medvedev in 2009. However, this project never went beyond the stage of preliminary agreements, and both sides are increasingly disappointed with its progress. Germany continues to aspire to play the role of the leading EU member state involved in the transformation process in Russia, yet this is no longer treated in terms of the âRussia firstâ attitude without any reservations. Germans are becoming increasingly aware that their efforts are doomed to fail without true Russian efforts aimed at the democratization of both their public life and economic structures
The BIOKLIM project: biodiversity research between climate change and wilding in a temperate montane forest : the conceptual framework
To understand the rapid rate of change in global biodiversity, it is necessary to analyse the present condition of ecosystems and to elucidate relationships of species to their environment. The BIOKLIM Project (Biodiversity and Climate Change Project) is intended to close this gap in our knowledge of montane and high montane forests of Central European low mountain ranges, one of the most threatened mixed montane systems worldwide. The Bavarian Forest National Park is characterised by its altitude range of ca. 800 m and a strongly developed gradient of forest structure. Relicts of old growth forests (areas of former local nature reserves) and dead stands, mostly killed by bark beetles, are accompanied by widely varying levels of woody debris and light. The gradients comprise a wide range of abiotic and forest structure factors, making the study area well suited for a multidisciplinary investigation of biodiversity. Unconstrained ordination (CA) of six taxa (vascular plants, wood inhabiting fungi, birds, carabids, spiders and molluscs) indicate the altitudinal gradient to be the main driver for distribution patterns of species assemblages. Objectives, structure, study design and data sampling of the BIOKLIM Project are described in detail. We set up 293 sampling plots along four main straight transects following the altitudinal gradient. All abiotic and stand structure data regarded as relevant are available for each plot. Vascular plants, wood inhabiting fungi and birds were sampled or mapped on all 293 plots. For the other 22 investigated taxa we used subsamples pre-stratified according to the sampling methods. The necessity of dealing with spatial autocorrelation, arising from sampling along linear transects, is described. Finally, study approach of our biodiversity project is compared with others involving altitudinal gradients. Worldwide, only a few multidisciplinary biodiversity studies have been previously conducted on long altitudinal gradients. However, in most cases sampling techniques were similar to ours, which allows comparison of results between continents. Autonomous satellite constellation for enhanced Earth coverage using coupled selection equations
This paper presents a novel solution to the problem of autonomous task allocation for a self-organising constellation of small satellites in Earth orbit. The method allows the constellation members to plan manoeuvres to cluster themselves above particular target longitudes on the Earthâs surface. This is enabled through the use of Coupled Selection Equations, which represent a dynamical systems approach to combinatorial optimisation problems, and whose solution tends towards a Boolean matrix which describes pairings of the satellites and targets which solves the relevant assignment problems. Satellite manoeuvres are actuated using a simple control law which incorporates the results of the Coupled Selection Equations. Three demonstrations of the efficacy of the method are given in order of increasing complexity - first with an equal number of satellites and targets, then with a surplus of satellites, including agent failure events, and finally with a constellation of two different satellite types. The method is shown to provide efficient solutions, whilst being computationally non-intensive, quick to converge and robust to satellite failures. Proposals to extend the method for on-board processing on a distributed architecture are discussed
