This paper aims to contribute to, and extend, the emergent Sociology of organizational space. It engages critically with labour process approaches, which position space within a control-resistance paradigm, suggesting that the conceptualization of space embedded within these accounts is limited and limiting. Drawing on insights from cultural geography the paper uses a new empirical study to show the ways that spatial meanings and spatial practices in the micro-spaces of office life are constructed through diverse experiences, memories and identities operating at a range of spatial scales.Cultural Geography; Hot-desking; Labour Process; Organization; Space

In some implementations, the technology can render a dense layout of interactive mechanisms (e.g., selectable text and/or graphics) that are responsive to low accuracy input methods on the XR device. In some implementations, an XR device can associate a shortcut with the physical object (e.g., an action relative to the physical object, an option to perform an action relative to the physical object, etc.). In some implementations, a workload manager can select an augmentation workload using one or more of captured environment data (e.g., captured visual frames, audio, etc.), output from the initial stage model(s), any other suitable data

    Serverless computing

Serverless computing has emerged as a new mindset when it comes to cloud computing, promising efficient resource utilization, automatic scaling, and cost optimization for a wide range of applications. This thesis explores the adoption, performance, and cost considera tions of deploying applications that use intend to use serverless functions, one of the leading Serverless types. This thesis starts by providing an overview of Serverless computing, including its key advan tages and disadvantages and the rising adoption it has gained throughout the recent years. It presents a comprehensive comparison of various Serverless platforms and discusses the unique features offered by each. After this context phase, this thesis presents a design section composed by a migration guide that allows developers to transition from a traditional application to one that takes advan tage of serverless benefits. The guide outlines best practices and step-by-step instructions, facilitating the adoption of Serverless computing in real-world scenarios. Using the previously created guide, the next section carries out a practical use case: the mi gration of complex computational logic from a traditional Java application to AWS Lambda functions. Performance evaluations are conducted, considering metrics such as the execution duration and the amount of concurrent executions. These findings are then evaluated next to the costs associated with deploying and running Java applications in a virtual machine or with a Serverless architecture. While Serverless computing is quite promising, networking issues often arise in practice, affecting the overall efficiency of Serverless applications. This thesis addresses these chal lenges, identifying the installation and migration difficulties, how to overcome them, and what are the expected limitations, while proposing potential solutions. In summary, this thesis offers valuable insights into the adoption, performance, and cost opti mization of Serverless computing for Java applications. It provides a roadmap for developers looking to take advantage of the benefits of Serverless computing in their projects

    Modern computing: Vision and challenges

    Get PDF
Over the past six decades, the computing systems field has experienced significant transformations, profoundly impacting society with transformational developments, such as the Internet and the commodification of computing. Underpinned by technological advancements, computer systems, far from being static, have been continuously evolving and adapting to cover multifaceted societal niches. This has led to new paradigms such as cloud, fog, edge computing, and the Internet of Things (IoT), which offer fresh economic and creative opportunities. Nevertheless, this rapid change poses complex research challenges, especially in maximizing potential and enhancing functionality. As such, to maintain an economical level of performance that meets ever-tighter requirements, one must understand the drivers of new model emergence and expansion, and how contemporary challenges differ from past ones. To that end, this article investigates and assesses the factors influencing the evolution of computing systems, covering established systems and architectures as well as newer developments, such as serverless computing, quantum computing, and on-device AI on edge devices. Trends emerge when one traces technological trajectory, which includes the rapid obsolescence of frameworks due to business and technical constraints, a move towards specialized systems and models, and varying approaches to centralized and decentralized control. This comprehensive review of modern computing systems looks ahead to the future of research in the field, highlighting key challenges and emerging trends, and underscoring their importance in cost-effectively driving technological progress

The Office of Space Communications (OSC) is tasked by NASA to conduct a planning process to meet NASA's science mission and other communications and data processing requirements. A set of technology trend studies was undertaken by Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC) for OSC to identify quantitative data that can be used to predict performance of electronic equipment in the future to assist in the planning process. Only commercially available, off-the-shelf technology was included. For each technology area considered, the current state of the technology is discussed, future applications that could benefit from use of the technology are identified, and likely future developments of the technology are described. The impact of each technology area on NASA operations is presented together with a discussion of the feasibility and risk associated with its development. An approximate timeline is given for the next 15 to 25 years to indicate the anticipated evolution of capabilities within each of the technology areas considered. This volume contains four chapters: one each on technology trends for database systems, computer software, neural and fuzzy systems, and artificial intelligence. The principal study results are summarized at the beginning of each chapter

CO2-O2 interactions in extension of tolerance to acute hypoxia

    Get PDF
Objectives and results of experimental projects a re summarized. The scope of information desired included (1) physiological and performance consequences of exposures to simulated microgravity, in rest and graded physical activity, (2) separate influences of graded degrees of atmospheric hypercapnia and hypoxia, and (3) composite effects of hypoxia and hypercapnia. The research objectives were selected for close relevance to existing quantitative information concerning interactions of hypercapnia and hypoxia on respiratory and brain circulatory control. They include: (1) to determine influences of normoxic immersion on interrelations of pulmonary ventilation, arterial PCO2 and PO2, and brain blood flow, in rest and physical work; (2) to determine influence of normoxic immersion on respiratory reactivity to atmospheric hypercapnia at rest; (3) to determine influence of atmospheric hypoxia on respiratory reactivity to hypercapnia at rest and in work; and (4) to provide physiological baselines of data concerning adaptations in acute exposures to aid in investigation of rates of adaptation or deteriorations in physiological or performance capability during subsequent multi-day exposures. A list of publications related to the present grant period is included along with an appendix describing the Performance Measurement System (human perceptual, cognitive and psychomotor functions)

The researcher proposed to advice in the selection of an Integrated Online Library System (IOLS) for use in the 103 school media centers in the Palm Beach County Schools, Florida. This was accomplished by evaluating the two finalists of those vendors who answered the district\u27s Request for Proposal (RFP). Of the five vendors who responded to the RFP. CLSI and SIRSI were selected as the systems most likely to meet the needs of the media centers of the school district. An overview and definition of IOLS was first discussed. This overview then related itself to the needs of the school district as presented in the RFP. A selection criteria was then designed from previous research on the subject to help find the ideal system. The history and development of an Integrated Online Library System was important in seeing where the systems have originated in contrast to the systems in the Eighties to the also revealed the present time. Literature IOLS principles of operation. The Request for Proposal reflected the needs assessment discussed over several years of committee meetings of representatives from various schools. The committees explored IOLS automated options and compared these options. The RFP outlined the system requirements. Thoughts on staff attitudes while planning for a system were also considered. Each system was evaluated with the criteria outlined in the RFP. The background and capabilities of both systems were explored. This exploration took place where by the benchmark tests, on-site demonstrations systems were in use daily, conferences with the vendors, systems. And reading literature reviews on both systems. Evaluation guidelines and criteria were found in library resources. The functions required for terminal access requirements, process for data conversion, vendor background and reliability, contained in these library resources. And the cost were contained in these library resources. The results of this study culminated in the official recommendation of the SIRSI to be purchased by the district\u27s school board. It was the expectation of the author of this document to see the purchase of the recommended system by the school board and have it implemented in all the schools in the district within a three year period following the submission of the recommendation
