An interactive approach of assembly planning
An interactive approach to assembly planning is presented. It provides a virtual reality interface for production engineers to program the virtual representation of robotic manipulators in a three-dimensional (3D) operation space. The direct human involvement creates a user-defined assembly sequence, which contains the human knowledge of mechanical assembly. By extracting the precedence relationship of machinery parts, for the first time it becomes possible to generate alternative assembly sequences automatically from a single sequence for robot reprogramming. This interactive approach introduces human expertise into assembly planning, thus breaking down the computational complexity of autonomous systems. Experiments and analysis provide strong evidence to support the incontestable advantages of manufacturing in the computer
Direct Manipulation-like Tools for Designing Intelligent Virtual Agents
If intelligent virtual agents are to become widely adopted it is vital that they can be designed using the user friendly graphical tools that are used in other areas of graphics. However, extending this sort of tool to autonomous, interactive behaviour, an area with more in common with artificial intelligence, is not trivial. This paper discusses the issues involved in creating user-friendly design tools for IVAs and proposes an extension of the direct manipulation methodology to IVAs. Integrating Olfaction in a Robotic Telepresence Loop
In this work we propose enhancing a typical
robotic telepresence architecture by considering olfactory and wind flow information in addition to the common audio and video channels. The objective is to expand the range of applications where robotics telepresence can be applied, including those related to the detection of volatile chemical substances (e.g. land-mine detection, explosive deactivation, operations
in noxious environments, etc.). Concretely, we analyze how the sense of smell can be integrated in the telepresence loop, covering the digitization of the gases and wind flow
present in the remote environment, the transmission through
the communication network, and their display at the user location. Experiments under different environmental conditions are presented to validate the proposed telepresence system when

Discrete event simulation and virtual reality use in industry: new opportunities and future trends
This paper reviews the area of combined discrete
event simulation (DES) and virtual reality (VR) use within industry.
While establishing a state of the art for progress in this
area, this paper makes the case for VR DES as the vehicle of choice
for complex data analysis through interactive simulation models,
highlighting both its advantages and current limitations. This paper
reviews active research topics such as VR and DES real-time
integration, communication protocols, system design considerations,
model validation, and applications of VR and DES. While
summarizing future research directions for this technology combination,
the case is made for smart factory adoption of VR DES as
a new platform for scenario testing and decision making. It is put
that in order for VR DES to fully meet the visualization requirements
of both Industry 4.0 and Industrial Internet visions of digital
manufacturing, further research is required in the areas of lower
latency image processing, DES delivery as a service, gesture recognition
for VR DES interaction, and linkage of DES to real-time data streams and Big Data sets
Internet of robotic things : converging sensing/actuating, hypoconnectivity, artificial intelligence and IoT Platforms
The Internet of Things (IoT) concept is evolving rapidly and influencing newdevelopments in various application domains, such as the Internet of MobileThings (IoMT), Autonomous Internet of Things (A-IoT), Autonomous Systemof Things (ASoT), Internet of Autonomous Things (IoAT), Internetof Things Clouds (IoT-C) and the Internet of Robotic Things (IoRT) etc.that are progressing/advancing by using IoT technology. The IoT influencerepresents new development and deployment challenges in different areassuch as seamless platform integration, context based cognitive network integration,new mobile sensor/actuator network paradigms, things identification(addressing, naming in IoT) and dynamic things discoverability and manyothers. The IoRT represents new convergence challenges and their need to be addressed, in one side the programmability and the communication ofmultiple heterogeneous mobile/autonomous/robotic things for cooperating,their coordination, configuration, exchange of information, security, safetyand protection. Developments in IoT heterogeneous parallel processing/communication and dynamic systems based on parallelism and concurrencyrequire new ideas for integrating the intelligent “devices”, collaborativerobots (COBOTS), into IoT applications. Dynamic maintainability, selfhealing,self-repair of resources, changing resource state, (re-) configurationand context based IoT systems for service implementation and integrationwith IoT network service composition are of paramount importance whennew “cognitive devices” are becoming active participants in IoT applications.This chapter aims to be an overview of the IoRT concept, technologies,architectures and applications and to provide a comprehensive coverage offuture challenges, developments and applications
A Conceptual Framework for Motion Based Music Applications
Imaginary projections are the core of the framework for motion
based music applications presented in this paper. Their design depends
on the space covered by the motion tracking device, but also
on the musical feature involved in the application. They can be considered
a very powerful tool because they allow not only to project
in the virtual environment the image of a traditional acoustic instrument,
but also to express any spatially defined abstract concept.
The system pipeline starts from the musical content and, through a
geometrical interpretation, arrives to its projection in the physical
space. Three case studies involving different motion tracking devices
and different musical concepts will be analyzed. The three
examined applications have been programmed and already tested
by the authors. They aim respectively at musical expressive interaction
(Disembodied Voices), tonal music knowledge (Harmonic
Walk) and XX century music composition (Hand Composer)
