(Tissue) P Systems with Vesicles of Multisets
We consider tissue P systems working on vesicles of multisets with the very
simple operations of insertion, deletion, and substitution of single objects.
With the whole multiset being enclosed in a vesicle, sending it to a target
cell can be indicated in those simple rules working on the multiset. As
derivation modes we consider the sequential mode, where exactly one rule is
applied in a derivation step, and the set maximal mode, where in each
derivation step a non-extendable set of rules is applied. With the set maximal
mode, computational completeness can already be obtained with tissue P systems
having a tree structure, whereas tissue P systems even with an arbitrary
communication structure are not computationally complete when working in the
sequential mode. Adding polarizations (-1, 0, 1 are sufficient) allows for
obtaining computational completeness even for tissue P systems working in the
sequential mode.Comment: In Proceedings AFL 2017, arXiv:1708.0622

Development and Evaluation of Sensor Concepts for Ageless Aerospace Vehicles: Report 3 - Design of the Concept Demonstrator
This report provides an outline of the essential features of a Structural Health Monitoring Concept Demonstrator (CD) that will be constructed during the next eight months. It is emphasized that the design cannot be considered to be complete, and that design work will continue in parallel with construction and testing. A major advantage of the modular design is that small modules of the system can be developed, tested and modified before a commitment is made to full system development. The CD is expected to develop and evolve for a number of years after its initial construction. This first stage will, of necessity, be relatively simple and have limited capabilities. Later developments will improve all aspects of the functionality of the system, including sensing, processing, communications, intelligence and response. The report indicates the directions this later development will take
Frontiers of Membrane Computing: Open Problems and Research Topics
This is a list of open problems and research topics collected after the Twelfth
Conference on Membrane Computing, CMC 2012 (Fontainebleau, France (23 - 26 August
2011), meant initially to be a working material for Tenth Brainstorming Week on
Membrane Computing, Sevilla, Spain (January 30 - February 3, 2012). The result was
circulated in several versions before the brainstorming and then modified according to
the discussions held in Sevilla and according to the progresses made during the meeting.
In the present form, the list gives an image about key research directions currently active
in membrane computing
Complexity and modeling power of insertion-deletion systems
INSERTION-DELETION SYSTEMS
The central object of the thesis are insertion-deletion systems and their computational
power. More specifically, we study language generating models that use two string
rewriting operations: contextual insertion and contextual deletion, and their
extensions. We also consider a distributed variant of insertion-deletion systems in the
sense that rules are separated among a finite number of nodes of a graph. Such
systems are refereed as graph-controlled systems. These systems appear in many
areas of Computer Science and they play an important role in formal languages,
linguistics, and bio-informatics. We vary the parameters of the vector of size of
insertion-deletion systems and we study decidability/universality of obtained models.
More precisely, we answer the most important questions regarding the expressiveness
of the computational model: whether our model is Turing equivalent or not. We
systematically approach the questions about the minimal sizes of the insertiondeletion
systems with and without the graph-control
Inverse Design of Three-Dimensional Frequency Selective Structures and Metamaterials using Multi-Objective Lazy Ant Colony Optimization
With the rise of big data and the “internet of things,” wireless signals permeate today’s environment more than ever before. As the demand for information and security continues to expand, the need for filtering a crowded signal space will become increasingly important. Although existing devices can achieve this with additional components, such as in-line filters and low noise amplifiers, these approaches introduce additional bulk, cost and complexity. An alternative, low-cost solution to filtering these signals can be achieved through the use of Frequency Selective Surfaces (FSSs), which are commonly used in antennas, polarizers, radomes, and intelligent architecture. FSSs typically consist of a doubly-periodic array of unit cells, which acts as a spatial electromagnetic filter that selectively rejects or transmits electromagnetic waves, based on the unit cell’s geometry and material properties. Unlike traditional analog filters, spatial filters must also account for the polarization and incidence angle of signals; thus, an ideal FSS maintains a given frequency response for all polarizations and incidence angles. Traditional FSS designs have ranged from planar structures with canonical shapes to miniaturized and multi-layer designs using fractals and other space-filling geometries. More recently, FSS research has expanded into three-dimensional (3D) designs, which have demonstrated enhanced fields of view over traditional planar and multi-layer designs. To date, nearly all FSSs still suffer from significant shifts in resonant frequencies or onset of grating lobes at incidence angles beyond 60 degrees in one or more polarizations. Additionally, while recent advances in additive manufacturing techniques have made fully 3D FSS designs increasingly popular, design tools to exploit these fabrication methods to develop FSSs with ultra-wide Fields of View (FOV) do not currently exist. In this dissertation, a Multi-Objective Lazy Ant Colony Optimization (MOLACO) scheme will be introduced and applied to the problem of 3D FSS design for extreme FOVs. The versatility of this algorithm will further be demonstrated through application to the design of meander line antennas, optical antennas, and phase-gradient metasurfaces
