    Semantics-based Automated Web Testing

    We present TAO, a software testing tool performing automated test and oracle generation based on a semantic approach. TAO entangles grammar-based test generation with automated semantics evaluation using a denotational semantics framework. We show how TAO can be incorporated with the Selenium automation tool for automated web testing, and how TAO can be further extended to support automated delta debugging, where a failing web test script can be systematically reduced based on grammar-directed strategies. A real-life parking website is adopted throughout the paper to demonstrate the effectivity of our semantics-based web testing approach.Comment: In Proceedings WWV 2015, arXiv:1508.0338

    Variety and volume dynamic management for value creation in changeable manufacturing systems

    In today’s uncertain market and continuously evolving technology, managing manufacturing systems are more complex than ever. This paper studies the dynamics of managing variety and volume to enhance value creation in manufacturers implementing system-level advanced and automated manufacturing technology (AAMT). The demand is composed of heterogeneous customers who make purchasing decisions depending on the variety levels and lead times of the firm’s product offerings. The cost structure adopted calculates profit as the difference between customer value creation rate (VCR) and costs associated with the process of creating this value. Reported results contribute to the variety and volume management literature by offering analytical clarity of factors affecting product platforms and capacity scalability management for systems with AAMT. In addition, insightful answers to the trade-offs between profit maximising market coverage and investments, smoothing demand policies and system stability for this type of environment are presented. Furthermore, the value of market information in deciding the industrial technology investment and also the impact of product life cycle on the same investment is captured

    Quantifying the Environmental Value in Western Coast of Semarang City, Central Java, Indonesia

    Coastal zone in Semarang City is facing climate change impact namely coastal inundation and sea level rise. These area are home to large and growing numbers of residents, visitors, large nursery area for coastal fauna resulting in many economic activities such as fishery, tourism and industrial development. However, the high concentrations of economic activities in the coastal zone contribute to higher potential of degradation of coastal (environmental) resources that drive these economics. This study aims to estimate the monetary value of coastal environment in two selected coastal wetlands such as beaches and estuary. The data collection has been done through non-site surveys and interviews with several respondents. Economic valuation approaches and techniques have been applied to quantify the value of coastal ecosystems including net factor income, hedonic price and contingent choice method. The highest economic contribution of coastal ecosystems was Fishery value accounts at Rp 23,340,352,861, followed by Amenity value at Rp 439,002,861, and Research value in a range Rp 238,868,000 and Rp 492,870,000. While, the lowest environmental value was estimated as Art value at Rp 214,045,150. For the two selected beaches and estuary, the Recreational/Tourism value was estimated at Rp 19,010,974,803, and Rp 1,011,087,200, respectively

    Grounding knowledge and normative valuation in agent-based action and scientific commitment

    Philosophical investigation in synthetic biology has focused on the knowledge-seeking questions pursued, the kind of engineering techniques used, and on the ethical impact of the products produced. However, little work has been done to investigate the processes by which these epistemological, metaphysical, and ethical forms of inquiry arise in the course of synthetic biology research. An attempt at this work relying on a particular area of synthetic biology will be the aim of this chapter. I focus on the reengineering of metabolic pathways through the manipulation and construction of small DNA-based devices and systems synthetic biology. Rather than focusing on the engineered products or ethical principles that result, I will investigate the processes by which these arise. As such, the attention will be directed to the activities of practitioners, their manipulation of tools, and the use they make of techniques to construct new metabolic devices. Using a science-in-practice approach, I investigate problems at the intersection of science, philosophy of science, and sociology of science. I consider how practitioners within this area of synthetic biology reconfigure biological understanding and ethical categories through active modelling and manipulation of known functional parts, biological pathways for use in the design of microbial machines to solve problems in medicine, technology, and the environment. We might describe this kind of problem-solving as relying on what Helen Longino referred to as “social cognition” or the type of scientific work done within what Hasok Chang calls “systems of practice”. My aim in this chapter will be to investigate the relationship that holds between systems of practice within metabolic engineering research and social cognition. I will attempt to show how knowledge and normative valuation are generated from this particular network of practitioners. In doing so, I suggest that the social nature of scientific inquiry is ineliminable to both knowledge acquisition and ethical evaluations

    Approach for Evaluating Changeable Production Systems in a Battery Module Production Use Case

    Volatile markets continue to complicate manufacturing companies’ production system design, leading to efficiency losses due to imperfect system setups. In such a market environment, a perfect system setup cannot be achieved. Therefore, changeable production systems that cope with immanent uncertainty gain interest in research and industry. For several decades, changeable production systems have been in the research and development stage. The advantages and disadvantages are well investigated. So far, however, they have gained only limited acceptance in industry. One of the reasons is the difficult evaluation of the benefits. Existing investment calculation methods either neglect many effects of changeability, such as easier adaptation to unpredictable events, or are too complex and therefore too time-consuming to become standard. Thus, a practical evaluation method is needed that considers these changeability aspects. This paper deviates the industry requirements regarding an evaluation method based on an industry survey and develops a practical approach for an evaluation method for a changeable production system considering monetary and non-monetary aspects. The approach is characterized by a calculation that is as accurate as possible considering the existing input factors. The method shows that changeable production systems excel in environments with frequent need for adaptation. The approach is applied to a battery module assembly in the ARENA2036 research campus

    Defining System Changeability: Reconciling Flexibility, Adaptability, Scalability, and Robustness for Maintaining System Lifecycle Value

    Designing and maintaining systems in a dynamic contemporary environment requires a rethinking of how systems provide value to stakeholders over time. Classically, two different approaches to promoting value sustainment may include developing either alterable or robust systems. The first accomplishes value delivery through altering the system to meet new needs, while the second accomplishes value delivery through maintaining a system to meet needs in spite of changes. The definitions of flexibility, adaptability, scalability, and robustness are shown to be different parts of the core concept of “changeability,” which can be described by three aspects: change agents, change effects, and change mechanisms. Cast in terms of system parameter changes, flexibility and adaptability are shown to relate to the origin of the change agent (external or internal to a system boundary respectively). Scalability and robustness, along with the additional property of modifiability, are shown to relate to change effects. The extent of changeability is determined by the number of possible change mechanisms available to the system as accepted by decision makers. Creating changeable systems, which can incorporate both classical notions of alterability and robustness, empowers systems to maintain value delivery over their lifecycle, in spite of changes in their contexts, thereby achieving value robustness to stakeholders over time

    Highway rehabilitation and reconstruction projects frequently cause road congestion and increase safety concerns while limiting access for road users. State Transportation Agencies (STAs) are challenged to find safer and more efficient ways to renew deteriorating roadways in urban areas. To better address the work zone issues, the Federal Highway Administration published updates to the Work Zone Safety and Mobility Rule. All state and local governments receiving federal aid funding were required to comply with the provisions of the rule no later than October 12, 2007. One of the rule’s major elements is to develop and implement Transportation Management Plans (TMPs). Using well-developed TMP strategies, work zone safety and mobility can be enhanced while road user costs can be minimized. The cost of a TMP for a road project is generally considered a high-cost item and, therefore, must be quantified. However, no tools or systematic modeling methods are available to assist agency engineers with TMP cost estimating. This research included reviewing TMP reports for recent Caltrans projects regarding state-of-the-art TMP practices and input from the district TMP traffic engineers. The researchers collected Caltrans highway project data regarding TMP cost estimating. Then, using Construction Analysis for Pavement Rehabilitation Strategies (CA4PRS) software, the researchers performed case studies. Based on the CA4PRS outcomes of the case studies, a TMP strategy selection and cost estimate (STELCE) model for Caltrans highway projects was proposed. To validate the proposed model, the research demonstrated an application for selecting TMP strategies and estimating TMP costs. Regarding the model’s limitation, the proposed TMP STELCE model was developed based on Caltrans TMP practices and strategies. Therefore, other STAs might require adjustments and modifications, reflecting their TMP processes, before adopting this model. Finally, the authors recommended that a more detailed step-by-step TMP strategy selection and cost estimate process be included in the TMP guidelines to improve the accuracy of TMP cost estimates

    Abstract Increasingly complex market dynamics due to unpredictable forecasts and shorter innovation cycles require maximum flexibility from production companies and their manufacturing systems. A manufacturing system should not only produce high-quality products at the lowest possible price; it should also be able to react quickly to market changes and consumers preferences. After the implementation in large enterprises belonging to the automotive sector and other related sectors, the concept of flexibility and changeability has been introduced in small and medium-sized enterprises (SME). In recent years, the concept of flexibility and changeability was object of research and industry. Current research in manufacturing pays great attention to flexibility and changeability in manufacturing and assembly systems. Therefore, research and investigations are needed to analyze the requirements for the design of flexible and changeable manufacturing and assembly systems in SMEs in order to define simple and practically suitable design guidelines. This research analyzes the nature of environmental changes, which SMEs are currently facing, due to a questionnaire-based survey. This research paper summarizes the results of the survey, executed with 27 SME companies in North Italy, showing the main requirements for the design of flexible and changeable manufacturing and assembly systems
