    WSN and RFID Integration in the IoT scenario: an Advanced Safety System for Industrial Plants

    The paper proposes and discusses the integration of WSN and RFID technologies in the IoT scenario. The proposed approach is based on the REST paradigm, thanks to which the two technologies can be seamless integrated by representing sensors, actuators and RFID related data as network resources globally addressable through state-of-the-art IoT protocols. The integration approach is detailed for the Smart Factory use case by proposing and developing an advanced IoT-based WSN and RFID integrated solution aiming at improving safety in industrial plants. The developed system can guarantee a safe access to factory dangerous areas in which safety equipments are required. In the paper, the system design is first presented, then, all the developed hardware and software solutions are described before presenting system performance results in a real test bed. System performance are reported in terms of response time and accuracy for authorization control and location tracking applications

    An Approach to Automatically Distribute and Access Knowledge within Networked Embedded Systems in Factory Automation

    This thesis presents a novel approach for automatically distribute and access knowledge within factory automation systems built by networked embedded systems. Developments on information, communication and computational technologies are making possible the distribution of tasks within different control resources, resources which are networked and working towards a common objective optimizing desired parameters. A fundamental task for introducing autonomy to these systems, is the option for represent knowledge, distributed within the automation network and to ensure its access by providing access mechanisms. This research work focuses on the processes for automatically distribute and access the knowledge.Recently, the industrial world has embraced service-oriented as architectural (SOA) patterns for relaxing the software integration costs of factory automation systems. This pattern defines a services provider offering a particular functionality, and service requesters which are entities looking for getting their needs satisfied. Currently, there are a few technologies allowing to implement a SOA solution, among those, Web Technologies are gaining special attention for their solid presence in other application fields. Providers and services using Web technologies for expressing their needs and skills are called Web Services. One of the main advantage of services is the no need for the service requester to know how the service provider is accomplishing the functionality or where the execution of the service is taking place. This benefit is recently stressed by the irruption of Cloud Computing, allowing the execution of certain process by the cloud resources.The caption of human knowledge and the representation of that knowledge in a machine interpretable manner has been an interesting research topic for the last decades. A well stablished mechanism for the representation of knowledge is the utilization of Ontologies. This mechanism allows machines to access that knowledge and use reasoning engines in order to create reasoning machines. The presence of a knowledge base allows as clearly the better identification of the web services, which is achievable by adding semantic notations to the service descriptors. The resulting services are called semantic web services.With the latest advances on computational resources, system can be built by a large number of constrained devices, yet easily connected, building a network of computational nodes, nodes that will be dedicated to execute control and communication tasks for the systems. These tasks are commanded by high level commanding systems, such as Manufacturing Execution Systems (MES) and Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) modules. The aforementioned technologies allow a vertical approach for communicating commanding options from MES and ERP directly to the control nodes. This scenario allows to break down monolithic MES systems into small distributed functionalities, if these functionalities use Web standards for interacting and a knowledge base as main input for information, then we are arriving to the concept of Open KnowledgeDriven MES Systems (OKD-MES).The automatic distribution of the knowledge base in an OKD-MES mechanism and the accomplishment of the reasoning process in a distributed manner are the main objectives for this research. Thus, this research work describes the decentralization and management of knowledge descriptions which are currently handled by the Representation Layer (RPL) of the OKD-MES framework. This is achieved within the encapsulation of ontology modules which may be integrated by a distributed reasoning process on incoming requests. Furthermore, this dissertation presents the concept, principles and architecture for implementing Private Local Automation Clouds (PLACs), built by CPS.The thesis is an article thesis and is composed by 9 original and referred articles and supported by 7 other articles presented by the author

    A modern teaching environment for process automation

    Emergence of the new technological trends such as Open Platform Communications Unified Architecture (OPC UA), Industrial Ethernet, cloud computing and the 5th wireless network (5G) enabled the implementation of Cyber-physical System (CPS) with flexible, configurable, scalable and interoperable business models. This provides new opportunities for the process automation systems. On the other hand, the constant urge of industries for cost and material efficient processes demands a new automation paradigm with the latest tools and technologies which should be taken into account while teaching future automation engineers. In this thesis, the modern teaching environment for process automation is designed, implemented and described. This work explains the connections, configurations and the test of three mini plants including the Multiple Heat Exchanger, the Three-tank system and the Mixing Tank. In addition, OPC UA communication between the server and its clients has been tested. The plants are a part of the state of the art of the architecture that provides the access of ABB 800xA to the cloud services via OPC UA over the 5G test wireless network. This new paradigm changes the old automation hierarchy and enables the cross layered communication in the old architecture. This modern teaching environment prepares the students for the future automation challenges with the latest tools and merges data analytics, cloud computing and wireless network studies with process automation. It also provides the unique chance of testing the future trends together in this unique process automation setup

    The monitoring of oil, gas and resources plant performance and the operational environment through sensors allows for greater insight into potential safety problems and operational requirements. Such solutions promote a safe and healthy work environment for all stakeholders and optimized operations. Intelligent techniques and the monitoring of key historical operational properties can be used to realize certain characteristics and patterns in operation data. Such solutions may enhance operational visualization, foresight, forecasting and maintenance schedules for effective and efficient operation and maintenance. This optimizes plant safety, production, turnarounds, shutdowns and maintenance and improves error tolerance and recovery.However, the development of robust devices that are able to perform in these remote and hostile requirements along with the intelligent solutions to structure, store, process and retrieve this information are difficult to realize.     Interoperability middleware for IIoT gateways based on international standard ontologies and standardized digital representation

    Recent advances in the areas of microelectronics, information technology, and communication protocols have made the development of smaller devices with greater processing capacity and lower energy consumption. This context contributed to the growing number of physical devices in industrial environments which are interconnected and communicate via the internet, enabling concepts such as Industry 4.0 and the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT). These nodes have different sensors and actuators that monitor and control environment data. Several companies develop these devices, including diverse communication protocols, data structures, and IoT platforms, which leads to interoperability issues. In IoT scenarios, interoperability is the ability of two systems to communicate and share services. Therefore, communication problems can make it unfeasible to use heterogeneous devices, increasing the project’s financial cost and development time. In an industry, interoperability is related to different aspects, such as physical communication, divergent device communication protocols, and syntactical problems, referring to the distinct data structure. Developing a new standard for solving these matters may bring interoperability-related drawbacks rather than effectively solving these issues. Therefore, to mitigate interoperability problems in industrial applications, this work proposes the development of an interoperability middleware for Edge-enabled IIoT gateways based on international standards. The middleware is responsible for translating communication protocols, updating data from simulations or physical nodes to the assets’ digital representations, and storing data locally or remotely. The middleware adopts the IEEE industrial standard ontologies combined with assets’ standardized digital models. As a case study, a simulation replicates the production of a nutrient solution for agriculture, controlled by IIoT nodes. The use case consists of three devices, each equipped with at least five sensors or actuators, communicating in different communication protocols and exchanging data using diverse structures. The performance of the proposed middleware and its proposed translations algorithms were evaluated, obtaining satisfactory results for mitigating interoperable in industrial applications.Devido a recentes avanços nas áreas de microeletrônica, tecnologia da informação, e protocolos de comunicação tornaram possível o desenvolvimento de dispositivos cada vez menores com maior capacidade de processamento e menor consumo energético. Esse contexto contribuiu para o crescente nú- mero desses dispositivos na industria que estão interligados via internet, viabilizando conceitos como Indústria 4.0 e Internet das Coisas Industrial (IIoT). Esses nós possuem diferentes sensores e atuadores que monitoram e controlam os dados do ambiente. Esses equipamentos são desenvolvidos por diferentes empresas, incluindo protocolos de comunicação, estruturas de dados e plataformas de IoT distintos, acarretando em problemas de interoperabilidade. Em cenários de IoT, interoperabilidade, é a capacidade de sistemas se comunicarem e compartilharem serviços. Portanto, esses problemas podem inviabilizar o uso de dispositivos heterogêneos, aumentando o custo financeiro do projeto e seu tempo de desenvolvimento. Na indústria, interoperabilidade se divide em diferentes aspectos, como comunicação e problemas sintáticos, referentes à estrutura de dados distinta. O desenvolvimento de um padrão industrial pode trazer mais desvantagens relacionadas à interoperabilidade, em vez de resolver esses problemas. Portanto, para mitigar problemas relacionados a intoperabilidade industrial, este trabalho propõe o desenvolvimento de um middleware de interoperável para gateways IIoT baseado em padrões internacionais e ontologias. O middleware é responsável por traduzir diferentes protocolos de comunicação, atualizar os dados dos ativos industriais por meio de suas representações digitais, esses armazenados localmente ou remotamente. O middleware adota os padrões ontológicos industriais da IEEE combinadas com modelos digitais padronizados de ativos industriais. Como estudo de caso, são realizadas simulações para a produção de uma solução nutritiva para agricultura, controlada por nós IIoT. O processo utiliza três dispositivos, cada um equipado com pelo menos cinco sensores ou atuadores, por meio de diferentes protocolos de comunicação e estruturas de dados. O desempenho do middleware proposto e seus algoritmos de tradução foram avaliados e apresentados no final do trabalho, os quais resultados foram satisfatórios para mitigar a interoperabilidade em aplicações industriais

    Service-oriented architecture for device lifecycle support in industrial automation

This domain is known for its plethora of heterogeneous equipment encompassing distinct functions, form factors, network interfaces, or I/O specifications supported by dissimilar software and hardware platforms. There is then an evident and crescent need to take every device into account and improve the agility performance during setup, control, management, monitoring and diagnosis phases. Service-oriented Architecture (SOA) paradigm is currently a widely endorsed approach for both business and enterprise systems integration. SOA concepts and technology are continuously spreading along the layers of the enterprise organization envisioning a unified interoperability solution. SOA promotes discoverability, loose coupling, abstraction, autonomy and composition of services relying on open web standards – features that can provide an important contribution to the industrial automation domain. The present work seized industrial automation device level requirements, constraints and needs to determine how and where can SOA be employed to solve some of the existent difficulties. Supported by these outcomes, a reference architecture shaped by distributed, adaptive and composable modules is proposed. This architecture will assist and ease the role of systems integrators during reengineering-related interventions throughout system lifecycle. In a converging direction, the present work also proposes a serviceoriented device model to support previous architecture vision and goals by including embedded added-value in terms of service-oriented peer-to-peer discovery and identification, configuration, management, as well as agile customization of device resources. In this context, the implementation and validation work proved not simply the feasibility and fitness of the proposed solution to two distinct test-benches but also its relevance to the expanding domain of SOA applications to support device lifecycle in the industrial automation domain

    Role-Based data visualization for Industrial IoT

    The competition among manufacturers in the global markets calls for the enhancement of the agility and performance of the production process and the quality of products. As a result, the production systems should be designed in a way to provide decision-makers with visibility and analytics. To fulfill these objectives, the development of factory information systems in manufacturing industries has been introduced as a practical solution in the past few years. On the other hand, the volume of data generated on the factory floor is rising. To improve the efficiency of manufacturing process, this amount of data should be analyzed by decision-makers. To cope with this challenge, visualization assists decision-makers to gain insight into data. To give a better perspective of collected data to decision-makers, effective visualization techniques should be employed. Adequate data visualization allows the end user to have better understanding of data and make effective decisions faster. Meanwhile, the adoption of the Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) and Internet of Things (IoT) as state-of-the-art technologies are among the most prominent trends in industrial automation. IoT technology is expected to generate and collect data from various sensors and devices within the production system, and enables enterprises to have real-time visibility into the flow of production process. Moreover, data received from factory floor should be transmitted from back-end side to the front-end side for future analysis. To implement the exchange of data efficiently, the solution should support different communication protocols to make interoperability among heterogeneous devices on shop floor. This study describes an approach for building a role-based visualization of industrial IoT. An extensible architecture was provided by which the future growth of data and emerging new protocols has been anticipated. By using the IoT platform introduced in this thesis, selected KPIs can be monitored by different levels of enterprise.
