Teaching research methods: Introducing a psychogeographical approach

    Get PDF
This paper explores teaching business students research methods using a psychogeographical approach, specifically the technique of dérive. It responds to calls for new ways of teaching in higher education and addresses the dearth of literature on teaching undergraduate business students qualitative research methods. Psychogeography challenges the dominance of questionnaires and interviews, introduces students to data variety, problematizes notions of success and illuminates the importance of observation and location. Using two studies with undergraduate students, the authors emphasize place and setting, the perception of purpose, the choice of data, criteria of success and the value of guided reflection and self-reflection in students’ learning. Additionally the data reflect on the way students perceive research about management and the nature of management itself. The paper concludes that the deployment of psychogeography to teach business research methods although complex and fraught with difficulty is nevertheless viable, educationally productive and worthy of further research

The aim of this research is to investigate how KUiTTHO students use an online forum in the process of learning; how KUiTTHO students communicate with their lecturer and the socio-linguistic aspect of using and online platform. The participants of this research were students from Electrical Department who were taking the subject- Electric and Magnet subject in KUiTTHO. The number of the students in the sample class was 63. This research is a combination of qualitative and quantitative methods. The researcher used four methods in the data collection. They were interview, observation, content analysis and questionnaire. The online platform used to conduct this research was Nicenet. At the end of this research, the finding suggests that online classroom should be applied into the process of teaching and learning in institution of higher education in Malaysia such as KUiTTH

In education research, qualitative research methods have gained attention because they allow the investigation of several people-related issues that cannot be investigated using quantitative methods. Though qualitative and quantitative research methods lies on separate continuum, they all aimed at identifying problems using different approach. This study explains the usefulness of using creative method qualitative approaches in an effort to obtain quality data for the study. The purpose of this paper is to introduce readers with some of the creative methods that can be applied, which is not only can actively engage informants during the research process but also to more fully aware of their perceptions, experiences, feelings and life events. Data were collected among 24 final year engineering student using semi-structured interview, integrated with two creative activities namely the use of graph sketching activity and photo-card activity. The purpose of these activities are to deepening the exploration activities and understandings of intrinsic and extrinsic motivation factors that influence the retention and success of engineering students at higher education institutions. Data were analysed using a thematic coding process and ATLAS.ti software was used to assist the coding process. Using the creative methods in this study have been proved to be an effective strategy to extract quality data from the interview process where an intrinsic and extrinsic motivations of the students can be explained and expanded in more detailed

The purpose of this study was to analyze the research trends in the doctoral dissertation program over the past three years (2016 - 2018). A qualitative approach with content analysis methods was conducted at 4 universities, selected from 12 universities of the Teacher Education and Training Institute, namely Univeristas Pendidikan Indonesia, Universitas Negeri Yogyakarta, Universitas Negeri Surabaya and Universitas Negeri Jakarta. Sample in this study were study program at Educational Management, Language Education, Sports Education, Basic Education, and Education Research and Evaluation. A total of 327 dissertation were analyzed, consisted 36 dissertations from UPI, 32 dissertations from UNY, 35 dissertations from UNESA, and 224 dissertations from UNJ. The parameters used to analyze the study was focus on research issues and themes, theories used, research methods, data collection techniques, sampling techniques and data analysis techniques, novelty, citations and reading sources. The results showed in the last 3 years, UNJ produced higher numbers of dissertation compared to others university. While others, less than 40 dissertations were selected. Education research trends in each study program are very diverse, ranging from issues and research themes, research methods used to data analysis. Majority of the research methods used were descriptive qualitative, quantitative and R&D, data collection using questionnaires, observations, interviews, and documents, while data analysis uses more descriptive analysis. While the practice of using educational technologies in Higher Education is increasingly common among educators, there is a paucity of research on innovative uses of emerging technologies to transform teaching and learning. This paper draws on data collected as part of a larger study aimed at investigating emerging technologies and their use in South African Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) to improve teaching and learning. The research employed a mixed method research design, using both qualitative and quantitative data collection methods—quantitative data from a survey of 262 respondents from 22 public HEIs in South Africa and qualitative data gathered from 16 experts/practitioners on their self-reflective definition of the term “emerging technologies.” The paper concludes that levels of institutional development, access to resources, discipline, group belonging and individual motivation of respondents influenced the way they defined emerging technologies including what constituted an innovative use of technology, foregrounding the contextuality of emerging technologies.Department of HE and Training approved lis

Reshaping dominant stories : a poststructuralist approach to online role play

Online role play is an increasingly popular teaching/learning technique in higher education (Wills & McDougall 2009) but there has been little research into ways a poststructuralist approach may be supported in this format. This paper describes two very different means of incorporating a poststructuralist approach into role plays in higher education to problematise dominant assumptions in the language and content of the subject matter. The first method was a series of interventions in a face-to-face role play in which medical students practised consultations with adolescent school students. The consultations were interrupted repeatedly with activities designed to interrogate assumptions and the school students acted as coaches to improve the medical students\u27 technique. Although this role play was performed face-to-face, some of its activities may be redeveloped to suit an online role-playing format. The second method was a feature of an online role play involving Middle-East politics and journalism students, in which daily online newspapers provided a reflecting and distorting mirror to the political events simulated by the politics students. Indications of ways in which the two methods produced changes in understanding were gathered using a mixture of qualitative and quantitative methods: questionnaires, focus groups, interviews, participant observation and analysis of online discussions and artefacts

The purpose of this qualitative research is to solve the diversity and talent paradox in higher education. The research study focuses on the significance of employees with H1B visa in higher education to design global educational experience for students. Higher education is continually evolving and the United States is a melting pot for international students from across the globe, with around 350,472 students entering the United States on an F1 visa in 2017. Institutions put efforts into diversity, however research shows that there is still a gap to bridge. H1B visa employees come in with a wealth of cultural experience, inter disciplinary education, and dedication. Diversity can be valuable in many folds in higher education; (1) mentoring, (2) global perspective from faculty and staff while designing courses, (3) fostering innovation and social impact, (4) preparing for the real world, and (5) student retention. The research is based on in-depth investigations of deans, faculty members, and students in a small private institution; data will be collected using various methods such as observations and interviews
