Crowdsensing-driven route optimisation algorithms for smart urban mobility
Urban rörlighet anses ofta vara en av de främsta möjliggörarna för en hållbar statsutveckling.
Idag skulle det dock kräva ett betydande skifte mot renare och effektivare stadstransporter vilket skulle stödja ökad social och ekonomisk koncentration av resurser i städerna. En viktig prioritet för städer runt om i världen är att stödja medborgarnas rörlighet inom stadsmiljöer medan samtidigt minska trafikstockningar, olyckor och föroreningar. Att utveckla en effektivare och grönare (eller med ett ord; smartare) stadsrörlighet är en av de svåraste problemen att bemöta för stora metropoler. I denna avhandling närmar vi oss problemet från det snabba utvecklingsperspektivet av ITlandskapet i städer vilket möjliggör byggandet av rörlighetslösningar utan stora stora investeringar eller sofistikerad sensortenkik.
I synnerhet föreslår vi utnyttjandet av den mobila rörlighetsavkännings, eng. Mobile Crowdsensing (MCS), paradigmen i vilken befolkningen exploaterar sin mobilkommunikation och/eller mobilasensorer med syftet att frivilligt samla, distribuera, lokalt processera och analysera geospecifik information. Rörlighetavkänningssdata (t.ex. händelser, trafikintensitet, buller och luftföroreningar etc.) inhämtad från frivilliga i befolkningen kan ge värdefull information om aktuella rörelsesförhållanden i stad vilka, med adekvata databehandlingsalgoriter, kan användas för att planera människors
rörelseflöden inom stadsmiljön.
Såtillvida kombineras i denna avhandling två mycket lovande smarta rörlighetsmöjliggörare, eng. Smart Mobility Enablers, nämligen MCS och rese/ruttplanering.
Vi kan därmed till viss utsträckning sammanföra forskningsutmaningar från dessa två delar. Vi väljer att separera våra forskningsmål i två delar, dvs forskningssteg: (1) arkitektoniska utmaningar vid design av MCS-system och (2) algoritmiska utmaningar för tillämpningar av MCS-driven ruttplanering.
Vi ämnar att visa en logisk forskningsprogression över tiden, med avstamp i mänskligt dirigerade rörelseavkänningssystem som MCS och ett avslut i automatiserade ruttoptimeringsalgoritmer

Una de las principales prioridades para las ciudades de todo el mundo es facilitar la movilidad de los ciudadanos dentro de los entornos urbanos, al mismo tiempo que se reduce la congestión, los accidentes y la contaminación. Sin embargo, desarrollar una movilidad urbana más eficiente y más verde (o en una palabra, más inteligente) es uno de los temas más difíciles de afrontar para las grandes áreas metropolitanas. En esta tesis, abordamos este problema desde la perspectiva de un panorama TIC en rápida evolución que nos permite construir movilidad sin la necesidad de grandes inversiones ni sofisticadas tecnologías de sensores. En particular, proponemos aprovechar el paradigma Mobile Crowdsensing (MCS) en el que los ciudadanos utilizan sus teléfonos móviles y dispositivos, para nosotros recopilar, procesar y analizar localmente información georreferenciada, distribuida voluntariamente. Los datos de movilidad recopilados de ciudadanos que voluntariamente quieren compartirlos (por ejemplo, eventos, intensidad del tráfico, ruido y contaminación del aire, etc.) pueden proporcionar información valiosa sobre las condiciones de movilidad actuales en la ciudad, que con el algoritmo de procesamiento de datos adecuado, pueden utilizarse para enrutar y gestionar el flujo de gente en entornos urbanos. Por lo tanto, en esta tesis combinamos dos prometedoras fuentes de movilidad inteligente: MCS y la planificación de viajes/rutas, uniendo en cierta medida los distintos desafíos de investigación. Hemos dividido nuestros objetivos de investigación en dos etapas: (1) Desafíos arquitectónicos en el diseño de sistemas MCS y (2) Desafíos algorítmicos en la planificación de rutas aprovechando la información del MCS. Nuestro objetivo es demostrar una progresión lógica de la investigación a lo largo del tiempo, comenzando desde los fundamentos de los sistemas de detección centrados en personas, como el MCS, hasta los algoritmos de optimización de rutas diseñados específicamente para la aplicación de estos. Si bien nos centramos en algoritmos y heurísticas para resolver problemas de enrutamiento de clase NP-hard, utilizamos ejemplos de aplicaciones en el mundo real para mostrar las ventajas de los algoritmos e infraestructuras propuestas

Digital phenotyping through multimodal, unobtrusive sensing
The growing adoption of multimodal wearable and mobile devices, such as smartphones and wrist-worn watches has generated an increase in the collection of physiological and behavioural data at scale. This digital phenotyping data enables researchers to make inferences regarding users’ physical and mental health at scale, for the first time. However, translating this data into actionable insights requires computational approaches that turn unlabelled, multimodal time-series sensor data into validated measures that can be interpreted at scale.
This thesis describes the derivation of novel computational methods that leverage digital phenotyping data from wearable devices in large-scale populations to infer physical behaviours. These methods combine insights from signal processing, data mining and machine learning alongside domain knowledge in physical activity and sleep epidemiology. First, the inference of sleeping windows in free-living conditions through a heart rate sensing approach is explored. This algorithm is particularly valuable in the absence of ground truth or sleep diaries given its simplicity, adaptability and capacity for personalization. I then explore multistage sleep classification through combined movement and cardiac wearable sensing and machine learning. Further, I demonstrate that postural changes detected through wrist accelerometers can inform habitual behaviours and are valuable complements to traditional, intensity-based physical activity metrics. I then leverage the concomitant responses of heart rate to physical activity that can be captured through multimodal wearable sensors through a self-supervised training task. The resulting embeddings from this task are shown to be useful for the downstream classification of demographic factors, BMI, energy expenditure and cardiorespiratory fitness. Finally, I describe a deep learning model for the adaptive inference of cardiorespiratory fitness (VO2max) using wearable data in free living conditions. I demonstrate the robustness of the model in a large UK population and show the models’ adaptability by evaluating its performance in a subset of the population with repeated measures ~6 years after the original recordings.
Together, this work increases the potential of multimodal wearable and mobile sensors for physical activity and behavioural inferences in population studies. In particular, this thesis showcases the potential of using wearable devices to make valuable physical activity, sleep and fitness inferences in large cohort studies. Given the nature of the data collected and the fact that most of this data is currently generated by commercial providers and not research institutes, laying the foundations for responsible data governance and ethical use of these technologies will be critical to building trust and enabling the development of the field of digital phenotyping.I was funded by GlaxoSmithKline and the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council. Aligning the "Manifesto for a European Research Network into Problematic Usage of the Internet" with the Diverse Needs of the Professional and Consumer Communities Affected by Problematic Usage of Pornography.
The Manifesto for a European research network into Problematic Usage of the Internet was published in May 2018. It was written from the perspective of the COST Action Network, a programme of the European Cooperation in Science and Technology CA16207 and is expected to have significant influence on research funding priorities over the next decade. The Manifesto identified nine key research priorities to advance understanding in the field. Our analysis shows that while at the most general level it identified problematic usage of pornography (PUP) as a key research priority, it then barely mentioned it again within the body of the report. This paper uses the Manifesto's framework to suggest research areas into the problematic usage of pornography which are of particular relevance to clinicians and other professionals working in the field who want to develop approaches to assist individuals and target groups affected by PUP. It also looks at potential research opportunities inspired by the lived-experience of users withdrawing from PUP. A large number of opportunities are identified for new work on PUP across all nine key research areas of the Manifesto

Nextcast : A software suite to analyse and model toxicogenomics data
The recent advancements in toxicogenomics have led to the availability of large omics data sets, representing the starting point for studying the exposure mechanism of action and identifying candidate biomarkers for toxicity prediction. The current lack of standard methods in data generation and analysis hampers the full exploitation of toxicogenomics-based evidence in regulatory risk assessment. Moreover, the pipelines for the preprocessing and downstream analyses of toxicogenomic data sets can be quite challenging to implement. During the years, we have developed a number of software packages to address specific questions related to multiple steps of toxicogenomics data analysis and modelling. In this review we present the Nextcast software collection and discuss how its individual tools can be combined into efficient pipelines to answer specific biological questions. Nextcast components are of great support to the scientific community for analysing and interpreting large data sets for the toxicity evaluation of compounds in an unbiased, straightforward, and reliable manner. We would like to thank the proposer, seconder, and all discussants for their time in reading our article and their thought-provoking comments. We are glad to find a broad consensus that neural-network-based approach offers a flexible framework for automatic change-point analysis. There are a number of common themes to the comments, and we have therefore structured our response around the topics of the theory, training, the importance of standardization and possible extensions, before addressing some of the remaining individual comments
Handwritten culture through digital native eyes: student participation in the digital fragmentology project Textus invisibilis
The present paper addresses the issue of how interest-driven learning can enhance an attitude of student-generated inquiry in the learning process so to promote student participation in university research projects. The research question is how wonder as an epistemic emotion may sustain students’ interest-generated questioning, and how the latter may influence the design of a university research project. As a case-study, the paper describes a laboratory on palaeography which took place in Spring 2019 at an Italian State Archive within a University bachelor program in the context of a digital fragmentology project. To design the laboratory and establish qualitative analysis methods for its data, an interdisciplinary educational approach was designed that combines interest-driven learning, emotion theory, value theory, hermeneutics, and User Experience, on the background of Ernst Cassirer’s view of a human being as an animal symbolicum. In the laboratory, the students’ questions and hypotheses arising from their interaction with historical scripts and Medieval handwriting culture are helping redesign some aspects of the research project Textus invisibilis both on the level of the research design and of the team composition, as well as pointing to a novel relevance of state archives and historical libraries in higher education
Empirical modelling as a new paradigm for educational technology
Educational technology has yet to deliver the benefits or successes that were expected in educational practice, especially in relation to issues other than the communication and delivery of teaching materials. Evidence suggests that these difficulties stem from the mismatch between formalised virtual learning environments and everyday sensemaking and between the rich potential for enhanced learning afforded by new technology and the constraints of old-style educational practice. In addressing this mismatch, some commentators suggest that the primary need is for a new culture of educational practice-and even that such a culture is already emerging, and others identify the need for a new paradigm for educational technology. The aim of this thesis is to explore the potential for a new paradigm for educational technology based on the principles and tools of Empirical Modelling (see http://dcs.warwick.ac.uk/modelling). The thesis builds upon previous research on Empirical Modelling as a constructionist approach to learning, and in particular Roe's doctoral thesis 'Computers for learning: an Empirical Modelling perspective'. Roe's treatment of Empirical Modelling can be viewed as generalising the use of spreadsheets for learning through applying 'programming by dependency' within the framework of existing educational practice. In contrast, this thesis is concerned at a more fundamental level with the contribution that Empirical Modelling can make to technology enhanced learning that may lead to new educational practices. In particular, it identifies eight significant characteristics of learning that are well-matched to Empirical Modelling activity, and associates these with experimental, flexible and meaningful strands in learning. The credentials of Empirical Modelling as a potential new foundation for educational technology are enhanced by demonstrating that Empirical Modelling is radically different from traditional software development and use. It provides a methodology for modelling with dependency that is more closely related to the use of spreadsheets for learning. The thesis elaborates on the relationship between Empirical Modelling and learning in a variety of different contexts, ways and applications. Three examples drawn from computer science higher education are explored to emphasise the experimental, flexible and meaningful characteristics of Empirical Modelling. This discussion of Empirical Modelling in a specific educational context is complemented by an investigation of its relevance to learning in a wider context, with reference to a broad range of subjects, to specific issues in language learning, and to the topics of lifelong learning and collaborative learning. Although the application of Empirical Modelling for learning is as yet too immature for large scale empirical studies, its potential is evaluated using informal empirical evidence arising from Empirical Modelling practice at Warwick. The sources for this evaluation are well-established teaching activities relating to Empirical Modelling in Computer Science at the University of 'Warwick, comprising an introductory module and a number of final year undergraduate projects. The thesis concludes by considering the extent to which Empirical Modelling can go beyond the support for constructionism envisaged by Roe, to address the broader agenda of supporting constructivist learning using computers. To this end, a close relationship between Empirical Modelling and a vision of constructivism recently set out by Bruno Latour in his paper 'The Promises of Constructivism' is demonstrated
