Usability testing of a respiratory interface using computer screen and facial expressions videos
Computer screen videos (CSVs) and users' facial expressions videos (FEVs) are recommended to evaluate systems performance. However, software combining both methods is often non-accessible in clinical research fields. The Observer-XT software is commonly used for clinical research to assess human behaviours. Thus, this study reports on the combination of CSVs and FEVs, to evaluate a graphical user interface (GUI).
Eight physiotherapists entered clinical information in the GUI while CSVs and FEVs were collected. The frequency and duration of a list of behaviours found in FEVs were analysed using the Observer-XT-10.5. Simultaneously, the frequency and duration of usability problems of CSVs were manually registered. CSVs and FEVs timelines were also matched to verify combinations.
The analysis of FEVs revealed that the category most frequently observed in users behaviour was the eye contact with the screen (ECS, 32±9) whilst verbal communication achieved the highest duration (14.8±6.9 min). Regarding the CSVs, 64 problems, related with the interface (73%) and the user (27%), were found. In total, 135 usability problems were identified by combining both methods. The majority were reported through verbal communication (45.8%) and ECS (40.8%). “False alarms” and “misses” did not cause quantifiable reactions and the facial expressions problems were mainly related with the lack of familiarity (55.4%) felt by users when interacting with the interface.
These findings encourage the use of Observer-XT-10.5 to conduct small usability sessions, as it identifies emergent groups of problems by combining methods. However, to validate final versions of systems further validation should be conducted using specialized software
Usability of Computerized Lung Auscultation–Sound Software (CLASS) for learning pulmonary auscultation
The mastering of pulmonary auscultation requires complex acoustic skills. Computer-assisted learning tools (CALTs) have potential to enhance the learning of these skills; however, few have been developed for this purpose and do not integrate all the required features. Thus, this study aimed to assess the usability of a new CALT for learning pulmonary auscultation. Computerized Lung Auscultation-Sound Software (CLASS) usability was assessed by eight physiotherapy students using computer screen recordings, think-aloud reports, and facial expressions. Time spent in each task, frequency of messages and facial expressions, number of clicks and problems reported were counted. The timelines of the three methods used were matched/synchronized and analyzed. The tasks exercises and annotation of respiratory sounds were the ones requiring more clicks (median 132, interquartile range [23-157]; 93 [53-155]; 91 [65-104], respectively) and where most errors (19; 37; 15%, respectively) and problems (n = 7; 6; 3, respectively) were reported. Each participant reported a median of 6 problems, with a total of 14 different problems found, mainly related with CLASS functionalities (50%). Smile was the only facial expression presented in all tasks (n = 54). CLASS is the only CALT available that meets all the required features for learning pulmonary auscultation. The combination of the three usability methods identified advantages/disadvantages of CLASS and offered guidance for future developments, namely in annotations and exercises. This will allow the improvement of CLASS and enhance students' activities for learning pulmonary auscultation skills
Inclusive Intelligent Learning Management System Framework - Application of Data Science in Inclusive Education

studying during COVID 19 confinement periods matched the findings in recent research about the
importance of digital accessibility through more e-learning intensive academic experiences. Narrative
and systematic literature reviews enabled providing context in World Health Organization’s
International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health, legal and standards framework and
information technology and communication state-of-the art. Assessing Portuguese higher education
institutions’ web sites alerted to the fact that only outlying institutions implemented near perfect,
accessibility-wise, websites.
Therefore a gap was identified in how accessible the Portuguese higher education websites are, the
needs of all students, including those with disabilities, and even the accessibility minimum legal
requirements for digital products and the services provided by public or publicly funded organizations.
Having identified a problem in society and exploring the scientific base of knowledge for context and
state of the art was a first stage in the Design Science Research methodology, to which followed
development and validation cycles of an Inclusive Intelligent Learning Management System
Framework. The framework blends various Data Science study fields contributions with accessibility
guidelines compliant interface design and content upload accessibility compliance assessment.
Validation was provided by a focus group whose inputs were considered for the version presented in
this dissertation. Not being the purpose of the research to deliver a complete implementation of the
framework and lacking consistent data to put all the modules interacting with each other, the most
relevant modules were tested with open data as proof of concept.
The rigor cycle of DSR started with the inclusion of the previous thesis on Atlântica University Institute
Scientific Repository and is to be completed with the publication of this thesis and the already started
PhD’s findings in relevant journals and conferences
Smart workplaces: a system proposal for stress management
Over the past last decades of contemporary society, workplaces
have become the primary source of many health issues, leading
to mental problems such as stress, depression, and anxiety.
Among the others, environmental aspects have shown to be the
causes of stress, illness, and lack of productivity. With the arrival
of new technologies, especially in the smart workplaces field,
most studies have focused on investigating the building energy
efficiency models and human thermal comfort. However, little has
been applied to occupants’ stress recognition and well-being
overall. Due to this fact, this present study aims to propose a
stress management solution for an interactive design system that
allows the adapting of comfortable environmental conditions
according to the user preferences by measuring in real-time the
environmental and biological characteristics, thereby helping to
prevent stress, as well as to enable users to cope stress when
being stressed. The secondary objective will focus on evaluating
one part of the system: the mobile application. The proposed
system uses several usability methods to identify users’ needs,
behavior, and expectations from the user-centered design
approach. Applied methods, such as User Research, Card
Sorting, and Expert Review, allowed us to evaluate the design
system according to Heuristics Analysis, resulting in improved
usability of interfaces and experience. The study presents the
research results, the design interface, and usability tests.
According to the User Research results, temperature and noise
are the most common environmental stressors among the users
causing stress and uncomfortable conditions to work in, and the
preference for physical activities over the digital solutions for
coping with stress. Additionally, the System Usability Scale (SUS)
results identified that the system’s usability was measured as
“excellent” and “acceptable” with a final score of 88 points out of
the 100. It is expected that these conclusions can contribute to
future investigations in the smart workplaces study field and their
interaction with the people placed there.Nas últimas décadas da sociedade contemporânea, o local de
trabalho tem se tornado principal fonte de muitos problemas de
saĂşde mental, como o stress, depressĂŁo e ansiedade. Os aspetos
ambientais têm se revelado como as causas de stress, doenças,
falta de produtividade, entre outros. Atualmente, com a chegada de
novas tecnologias, principalmente na área de locais de trabalho
inteligentes, a maioria dos estudos tem se concentrado na
investigação de modelos de eficiĂŞncia energĂ©tica de edifĂcios e
conforto térmico humano. No entanto, pouco foi aplicado ao
reconhecimento do stress dos ocupantes e ao bem-estar geral das
pessoas. Diante disso, o objetivo principal Ă© propor um sistema de
design de gestĂŁo do stress para um sistema de design interativo que
permita adaptar as condições ambientais de acordo com as
preferĂŞncias de utilizador, medindo em tempo real as caracterĂsticas
ambientais e biológicas, auxiliando assim na prevenção de stress,
bem como ajuda os utilizadores a lidar com o stress quando estĂŁo
sob o mesmo. O segundo objetivo Ă© desenhar e avaliar uma parte
do projeto — o protótipo da aplicação móvel através da realização
de testes de usabilidade. O sistema proposto resulta da abordagem
de design centrado no utilizador, utilizando diversos métodos de
usabilidade para identificar as necessidades, comportamentos e as
expectativas dos utilizadores. MĂ©todos aplicados, como Pesquisa de
Usuário, Card Sorting e Revisão de Especialistas, permitiram avaliar
o sistema de design de acordo com a análise heurĂstica, resultando
numa melhoria na usabilidade das interfaces e experiĂŞncia. O
estudo apresenta os resultados da pesquisa, a interface do design e
os testes de usabilidade. De acordo com os resultados de User
Research, a temperatura e o ruĂdo sĂŁo os stressores ambientais
mais comuns entre os utilizadores, causando stresse e condições
menos favoráveis para trabalhar, igualmente existe uma preferência
por atividades fĂsicas sobre as soluções digitais na gestĂŁo do
stresse. Adicionalmente, os resultados de System Usability Scale
(SUS) identificaram a usabilidade do sistema de design como
“excelente” e “aceitável” com pontuação final de 88 pontos em 100.
É esperado que essas conclusões possam contribuir para futuras
investigações no campo de estudo dos smart workplaces e sua

Nursing Pain Assessment & Management: A 3D Interactive Simulation
In this design case, a team developed a 3D interactive simulation for nursing students and professional nurses to train and practice pain assessment and management procedures. In the simulation environment, the trainees interact with three emotionally expressive animated patients. The three patients vary in their ethnicity, age, and emotion intensity. Successful completion of the scenario requires that the trainee perform of a series of pain assessment and management tasks. The trainee is evaluated on the efficiency and appropriate sequencing of the tasks.
The purpose of this paper is to describe the decisions made regarding the type of virtual patients used, the clickable objects, the pain assessment interview protocol, the visual representations in the simulation and the web portal. The paper also provides insight into the processes and steps taken during the design and development phases of this 3D interactive simulation including: the tasks analyses, motion capture, validation of the animations in the simulation, programming, and other tasks
